Does Stitt Have Supporters?

We've seen the trajectory of this program
"Trajectory" traces a predetermined route. That is a complete fallacy in football coaching. Coaches win or lose based on their abilities. A good coach may take a couple of years, or even three or four, to rebuild a genuinely destroyed or moribund program. Those facts don't fit here.

Third, there is no reason whatsoever to expect that just because a coach gets a "third year" that he will have a better record just because its his third year. Stitt will enter a third year with mostly his own recruits. For the most part, those recruits will have been part of the teams that have learned to really dislike Stitt. That is not going to get better with the passage of time.

whether they like him or not is irrelevant. what is important is whether or not the players respect his football acumen.

Yes, it is important. That was answered yesterday if you watched the game. Case closed.

I wasn't comparing the two, learn to read. They're apples and oranges philosophies. I was comparing coaching trajectories and time and patience to build programs the right way.

Bohl gets the benefit of the doubt wherever he went from UNDSU because he has a history of success in building & sustaining a program & delivering championships. Cowboy Joe came in & won a bowl game in year two @ Wyo. & only sniffed MT 500 one more time until he was shown the door. He had a history of playing for & winning championships @ two levels prior so why didn't things work out @ Wyoming?

Stitt's claim to fame is building a respectable program from a bunch of folks with big IQ's & a signature play he sort of eschews today. Not sure that there's an SAT/ACT requirement to hamstring him in recruiting here. Never been past round 2 @ either level and is pretty much performing to expectations given his history. You're right in saying he isn't going anywhere, but let's not pretend there's a "trajectory" comparison to make here because each coaches history wouldn't support that.

My point is there is no way of knowing what's going to happen past today. Not wishing him ill, but we both know he's not going to survive another year of regressing & mid-season indifference.

I support honoring the final year of his contract. If he cannot lead the Griz to minimum of 8 wins, brawl victory, and 2 playoff wins next season...he must go. If he does, he earns another year. After that, progress = contract, and regression = no contract.

That's the bar. The administration should tell him now.

I will support Stitt through year 3.
I think the minimum bar is pretty clear: playoffs or gone.

I too will see what the coach can do next year before rendering judgment.

Though you're absolutely right, the minimum bar is high.
The Grizzlies must be contending in, and having some success in, the playoffs every year. :ugeek:

Losing to Cats and failing to make playoffs this year count as a combined strike one.....next year each is a potential strike on its own. Three strikes and he is out. Could have tolerated missing playoffs this year with a Cat win, but lose at home to a Cat team with losing record is not acceptable on any level. If he wants to stay he better figure crap out

like it or not Stitt inherited a very average team and a program on the decline. He did not inheritate a championship caliber team, nothing even close.

according to you no coach deserves more than two years to prove themseleves. For all the reasons pointed out be by Titlests such thinking is simply moronic and would do nothing but ensure mediocracy, or worse, for years to come. I don't know if Stitt will ultimately be succesful, but I do know that he deserves more time to prove himself.

I'm behind Stitt, I remember last year a big sky team had the wheels fall off at the end of the season, finished 6 and 5 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a long time. This year....... 10 and 1 and big sky champs. One season does not label a team. Coach and players.

Should ask the players if they are behind Stitt, they are the ones who really matter in this equation.

I'm definitely still in the Stitt camp. People who want him removed after two seasons are likely 1. stupid 2. don't know anything about football 3. like to piss and moan despite who the coach is (unless it's Bobby Hauck) 4. Will not be happy unless we are 11-0 with semi-final appearances or better every single season.

Here's the thing. Bob ain't going anywhere this offseason. You might as well get to your safe spaces, cry it out, and come back in August. That's reality, deal with it.

Replacing Bob right now would be the most moronically stupid thing the AD could do. You're going to be paying a buyout (at the cost to the U and the taxpayers). You're going to set the program development back at least two more years (which means more losses). And who are you going to get to come coach a program knowing that you can be fired after two years at an FCS school because you don't win a national championship in your first or second year. Coaches want job security for themselves and their assistants, so some fans on here and the Twitter that insist that the coaching staffs aren't trying, etc are more moronically stupid.

That said, I was having this conversation earlier with some -very- prominent eGriz posters.. when is the last time we had a -good- quarterback that was playing within the system he was suited for? The answer? Probably Jordy in 2011.. anyone else notice how the team has struggled a bit since then? I wonder if there's a correlation there.. you know, changing coaches, changing philosophies, player development, etc. That's what happens when you've had four coaches since 2009.

How about we see how this one shakes out before we start firing coaches and actually let a coach get his players and staff in here and see if we can start winning consistently. We're on year two of this offense with quite a few players recruited for a different philosophy, and year one of a defense that also changed how it went about business.

I'll close with this.. Craig Bohl was 4-8 his first year at Wyoming, the fan base saw progress. Craig Bohl was 2-10 his second year at Wyoming and the pinheads of the fanbase (like quite a few on this message board) thought we should fire Bohl, fire Vigen, fire the AD, clean house, etc. Wyoming in year three is one win from hosting the Mountain West title game, two wins away from being Mountain West champions.

Come at me.

Mostly rational thoughts, but a poor analogy with Craig Bohl. He's a defensive coach that emphasizes defense, running the ball, and TOP . . . Three concepts foreign to Stitt. The other key with Bohl is culture and buy in. Stiff has some work to do in this area.

Stitt emphasizes fast pace, passing, and quick scoring. That's fools gold, and not the right fit in Montana as I've said all along.

It is a real stretch to compare Stitt to Bohl, isn't it.... Stitt won how many NCs in his previous job? Playing MSU is just like playing BSU....

I still believe in him. It's real easy to get on here after a loss and want his head on a platter, especially after losing to our rival at home that should have been run out of the stadium. It's about as easy as getting on here and singing his praises after a big win. We need to look at the full body of work.
It's not about one game; it's about the last several games, the regression and complete disarray that is obvious to everyone. Even MSU could scout the UM offense and defense and come up with a winning game plan. It's his stubbornness and arrogance that leads major donors to lose hope and light up Haslam's server and phone.

We have heard from many people unhappy with Stitt. Some would like him removed.
Does he have any defenders who would like him to remain as the Griz coach? It would be interesting to hear from them.

It doesn't I really matter how many detractors he has, there are only two supporters who matter - Haslam and Engstrom.

If I'm not mistaken, both Chad Chalich and Reese Phillips were brought in by Stitt. If you don't have a QB that can adapt to your 'system' then maybe you need to adjust your system until you find a QB that can play the way you want. I don't care about his system, all I want to see is some W's, and when you have 2 games at the end of the year against 2 less-than-stellar opponents and you lose both with the playoffs hanging in the balance, there is a problem. And the last one was at home against a rival that had exactly one conference win all year before beating us.

Obviously, Stitt will be here for one more year. Even a coach that has turned a program around (and I mean turn around in a negative way) should be allowed 3 years to get his guys, his system, etc. But Stitt does need to be held accountable. Haslam needs to let him know, privately, you are what your record says you are. And by the end of next year, we will know.

Unless you are willing to accept no playoffs, losing to the Scats and being a bottom feeder in the BSC for more than one year, while we wait for the right system, QB, whatever to kick in.

I know you know football Mr.T. Please let me know what would be your minimum expectations for Coach Stitt to accomplish in 2017 for him to get his contract renewed?

That's not what I said at all. I said THIS coach has demonstrated he lacks both the personal, technical and strategic skills to coach at these levels. He lost the team. That's the number one criteria for success or failure. It's a fail. He's "sunk costs" at this point. Another year just creates more damage and makes it more difficult to recruit and recover. It's not a matter of "oh, let's give him another chance." Another year makes it harder for the next guy. It gives UM a worse reputation. Not at this level. Not at $300,000 a year. This is a fail.
