I do have some experience in the medical (hardship) question since my son did redshirt his TRUE freshman year, then tore his ACL in the EWU/Griz game in 2011, his redshirt Freshman year. I thought he would automatically get a 6th year since he'd only played 3 games or less, or less than 30% of the year. The NCAA bylaws states a player can only apply for a 6th year of eligibility at the end of his/her 5th year and must show "2" years of injury to meet this hardship (medical waiver). If this was the case, half the Eastern "O" line could apply for a 6th year, which they can not!! McGee DOES NOT qualify under this criteria even if he doesn't play one more down this year. Hope that clears it up.
