"Most total yards in a game in NFL history
The two teams didn't just combine to break the Super Bowl record for most total yards in a game, but the 1,151 combined yards is the most ever in any game in NFL history. Both teams averaged more than 8.5 yards per pass and over five yards per rushing attempt."
One game a trend makes I guess?
Who said anything about a trend? I like good defenses and believe they are important. However, the number of posters who just throw cliches makes me laugh.
You were inferring it when you downplayed the importance of defense, by trying to for some reason bring Growler's defense wins championships mantra into it.
A vast majority of the time, a good defense will keep an average team in a game..a great defense can make that team look better than average. It isn't a statistical anomaly, this last Super Bowl however was.
No, you inferred it, but you were wrong. The recipient "infers", and that was you. The writer "implies".
I did not "play down" the importance of defense, except to say that it is not true that defense wins championships. Defense is important, but it does not always win championships, particularly in this day and age of huge offense.
I played defense in college. On a very good defense. We were dominant one year, giving up only 42 points and recording 6 shut outs. Didn't give up a field goal. However, our offense was good and very important too. It takes many things to have a championship team. Defense wins championships is just a cliché.
Your last para is closer to reality. However, what you said in that para does not equal defense wins championships.
