…it’s hard to recruit to montana…

… …

Yet here they are, in the dance, while we are buried in 5th and a 1-done in the conference tourney. Apparently they’re able to recruit at some level higher than the Griz currently.

...just to hit this back in your court AZ...
...gave the cats to much credit losing by 28...
...they were one player better than the griz this year...
...recruiting to montana might be the hardest job on the planet...

... 8-) ...

They performed exactly like every other BSC tournament champion with very few exceptions the last 20 years. Doesn’t change the fact they rolled through our conference, we lost to 4 bottom feeders in the last 3 weeks, finished 5th, and were 1-done in the tournament. They have significantly better players overall and will be kicking our asses regularly for the next couple years unless we get those magical “couple of quality bigs” from the portal.

The margin of talent between MSU and UM is unbelievably small. They won a bunch of close games, we lost them. They do not have a distinct talent advantage at all

Did they have a few close games? Sure, who didn’t….but a closer look at MSU vs UM:

MSU beat Idaho State 60-40 and 72-54. We lost to them. By 24.
MSU beat Idaho 92-72 and 70-64. We lost to them 82-76.
MSU beat Weber 78-57. We lost to them twice.
MSU beat SUU 79-63. We lost to them.
MSU beat Sac State 83-61. We lost to them.
MSU beat UNC 87-66. We lost to them.

There is definitely a distinct talent advantage, whether you see it or not.

Relax. MSU had a bunch of 6th year seniors. They’ll be back to earth next year, and they still almost were taken out by Weber in the tourney this year. There was little separating the top 6 teams in the league this year on any given night this year. UNC played MSU very close in both the regular season game, and played the worst game of their season in that championship. UM was easily the youngest of those top 6, and have two guys already on the roster with all big sky first team upside.

There are a number of rumors, all of which are unsubstantiated at this point, that point to this. I don't like to peddle them, but I have heard similar rumors. I hope it isnt the case, because I do believe that Travis is an excellent ambassador for the University and steward of the program. But he looked drained all year and completely sapped of energy. For what its worth probably isn't the best thing when you are trying to manage a mid-major division 1 basketball team.

That's pretty much why I think he needs a break. 1 can tell, he's not completely himself. We seem to forget, they also deal with every day things. I'm not sure, if he's dealing with more than just his job. If I knew, I'd support him as a friend. No need to bring personal things here, unless he makes things public knowledge.

I too believe, DeCuire is a terrific ambassador for the school. Wish I knew him better though. Then again, I was fortunate to know Tinkle the person and coach. Travis is more private.

Just responding to the above thoughts, with no inside knowledge about the rumors. I can't see giving Travis a year's break with Cobb as interim coach. That would kill recruiting. Recruits obviously want to know who their coach will be. If Travis is burned out now, what will he be after a year, or after coming back and another year or 2? I like and respect Travis as coach and representative of the University, but if he needs a break, it's time to move on. If all this rumor stuff is just that, and he is planning to come back with his usual energy, let's hope he has a banner recruiting year and the Griz are pointing to their accustomed position at the top of the BSC.

He’s not going anywhere. We would’ve heard something by now if he were. The GSA released their spring tour schedule yesterday and in it it mentioned that coach Decuire will be making appearances on the tour. Don’t think they would mention that if he was not going to be here next year.

You are probably right. If this is Trav's contract year, how many years would you give him?

Ahhh….the elusive “upside”…..always a dependable option.

TD signed an extension in December that puts him under contract into 2025.

I should have expanded my thoughts. I wasn't expecting him to take time off and return to the GRIZ, unless that option were extended to him.

Well it doesn’t really matter what I think because as it turns out, he signed a new 4 year deal back in December. Why they would keep that under wraps and not make an announcement, I’m not sure.

However, putting my AD hat on, if I had to make this decision I think it would be tough because if you don’t offer him the full 4 years or at least 3 he’s probably gonna walk. I think I would’ve given him at least 2 maybe 3 years which will get him all the way through the Beasley, Bannan, Whitney class.

That answers that. I hope DeCuire gets through whatever is going on, rather it be professional and or personal.

So my hopes of ever seeing a fast break, offensive rebounding or legit post play are gone. My hope was to live long enough to see the return to glory.

Oh well at least we have the LG.

Why do you assume he’s going through something?

Just a gut feeling. Things seem off. He seems to have lost a little edge. Something just isn't right.

…it’s simple.. he’ going thru…
…where do i get a big guy syndrome…
…get those annoying egriz guys off my back…

:) …

Not a lot of downside to extending a full contract extension, IMO. You tie up a winning, Griz legacy coach that has run a clean program, and keep recruiting stable.

If Trav heads to a bigger school, either as a head or an assistant coach, said school can likely afford to buy the contract out.

I don’t foresee a situation in the next few years where UM would want to actively cut ties. I don’t see much risk there for UM.

I think some folks have a pretty short memory and forget the success that Travis has had at UM. The Griz have had two tough years in a row, with a very young roster, one of those being the COVID year.

As good as the Montana Basketball program has been over the years, when have they ever strung together more than a couple years in a row of championship level teams? It’s cyclical, and I think this team under Decuire will get back to the big dance.
