For those of you that are interested... I will probably be doing my senior project on occupational noise exposure for coaches & referees at college football games. I'm working out some of the logistics, but I am planning on doing it next fall.

Bump. I'm finishing my bachelor's in occupational safety & health, & beginning my masters in industrial hygiene.

Congratulations, man. For your project, you should probably refrain from using coaches from 90% of the BSC as subjects. On average, their jobs are probably quieter than mine on Saturdays.

I thought the Seachicken stadium was supposed to be the new loudest stadium? But I may have heard wrong? What did you say?
I was at the Seachicken stadium yesterday. I can attest, to a reasonable degree of scientific probability, that it was the loudest stadium I have ever been too. That includes Mitchell stadium in Anaconda, btw.

I was there at the Hawks/Titans game too. I was also at the Niner game when they set the record that has since been broken by the Chiefs. Against the Titans it was loud, but the Niner game was absolutely insane. The Titan game I sat in the 100 level. Against the Niners I was three rows from the top of the stadium in the 300 level. I also walked around to different parts of the stadium during the game, including stops at different locations on the 100 and 300 levels.

The Niner game was WAY louder. I gladly paid $12 for a small bag of earplugs it was so loud. Even 3 rows from the top of the stadium if I took the earplugs out I would literally feel my eardrums vibrate like a blown speaker.

Sorry Griz fans, I was at the App State playoff game too and 25K fans in an open roof stadium just doesn't compare with 70K in a stadium that while also open roofed, is designed to trap and reflect the noise back into the stadium. That App State game was still probably the most fun I've ever had attending a game, that and the 1995 SFA playoff game. But the crowd noise level just didn't compare.

The most intimidating energy I've ever witnessed from a crowd was at Griz basketball games in the early '80's, but the loudest crowds I've ever been a part of have been Seahawk games.

But wagriz back then, seated what, 18-20k and to get that measurement (uncoordinated) compared to a stadium with 50-70k? :)

Nice article on the topic:

I was at the Titan game as well, it's definitely louder there, probably due to the design of the stadium. A design that makes it impossible to decipher a single word, phrase or song played over the inept speaker system in that stadium. I guess the designers thought the only thing that should be heard in that stadium is the crowd.

Granted these cannot be equal since all 3 were measured from different points in the stadium and all 3 would be louder on the field.

In order:
1995 SFA game from south end zone
2009 App St game
2000 App St playoff game in OT and 2007 EWU

Even with the data it's still far from being truly accurate. In order to do that you would need to measure from the same spot for the entire game and make averages or at least see the highest measured noise levels for each game. I only take a few measurements when I am guessing we will be loud.

I never had a measurement from the end of the 2009 App St game that is the only time I have ever been in WGS and heard noise like the 95 game. I was in the NEZ and up higher than I usually sit but it was loud when Quick dropped that last pass the place blew up.

What about the EWU game in the early 2000's where they went from the Griz 3 yard line first and goal with little time left in the fourth quarter, down a couple points, to fourth down and 53 on the last play of the game? Thats the loudest I've experienced, as part of the NEZ contingent. Maybe thats why my hearing ain't worth a sh*t anymore.

Here's what they say about WaGriz on the ewoo site. I don't recall which poster, but since there's only 3 or 4 of 'em, you can probably guess it pretty quickly.

. Having been to North Dakota and NDSU recently I know Wa Gz is behind them. It is very plain yet when it is full any stadium looks good. Having also been to Ap State that is better as well. My understanding is that JMU also has a better facility.

Fine line between ignorance and stupidity. Sometimes no line at all.

I cant argue with that list. The montana grizzlies cheer was so loud during the 1995 SFU game that it shook the stadium. It was unreal. Still never heard anything like it that game was epic for noise. And it was cold as balls and there was only about 15k people there.

Now that is funny. I still remember watching Mike Kramer's press conference when MSU went to App in the playoffs. All the press would ask him about was the atmosphere and noise of KBS compared to Wa/Griz. He said with a straight face, we practiced all week using a silent count and did not need it one time. You all have a nice stadium and atmosphere but it does not compare to Montana's.....

Fargodome According to Wikipedia is 130. It has a sub category called "crowd noise"

During the 2011 playoffs, the decibel level exceeded 130 decibels several times in the Fargodome.[5][6]

Metrodome was 126 during 1991 world series playoffs. for your reference.

You stop it, stop it right now! Don't you dare point out that there are stadiums better than WGS!! That's all that Griz fans have left to throw in others faces...

Now that is impressive if true. I thought I read somewhere that UW had the loudest official decibel recording in CFB. I can't remember if it was above 130, though.

133.6 decibels against Nebraska in 1992, according to ESPN

Thanks for the info. That is fucking loud. Pretty far up there for the Bison, too.

What, you aren't happy with the concrete remnants that would have been otherwise thrown away on the West Side, or the rejects from the rodeo ground bleachers on the East Side?

In order to have a stadium, you first need to have a team that you are interested in seeing. And that drive to Cheney from SpoCompton is just soo far, even if that is where the meth is freshly made, thanks to the Chemistry department.

But playing at home in December is dependent on winning at a place that’s been downright cruel to past Eagles teams, and promises to be loud today. Sound-measuring devices are in place at the 25,217-seat stadium, poised to measure a possible FCS noise record when Eastern has the ball.

But as one Eastern assistant said on the sideline, “Maybe we can set the quiet record if we can get a couple of long scores.”

The Internet smack-talk – on both sides – has already set some school records for volume and vitriol. The Eagles expect the same from the crowd, which promises to be up-close-and-personal behind the Eagles bench.
