Decibel level

Now I'm curious. Why (do you have this gadget?) Work or video.....? Just for kicks? I have some cool things but nothing that cool.
Yes

I use it to calibrate audio systems I design and install in businesses and homes. It's also cool to measure sound levels at college games I go to around the country. Lots of people say their stadium is louder than the next one I actually can prove it with data.

Granted the teams playing have a lot to do with the sound level but let's face it.....I don't go see Michigan in the big house and watch them play Indiana or Akron.

Very cool. When I screw something up with the tv/sound system/microwave clock etc I have to wait till some chick stops by to reset everything.

I thought the Seachicken stadium was supposed to be the new loudest stadium? But I may have heard wrong? What did you say?

Arrowhead on Sunday beat the Hawks' record. Which lasted 2 weeks.

After several years of trying to get some sort of false start counter in the stadium, athletics FINALLY put one up this season on Griz Vision. If we keep asking them about a decimal reader on Griz Vision, maybe they'll want to put one up too.

Any idea who to contact for this suggestion? I'd be more than happy to email a quick note.

Clearly we need a occupational health person or audiologist to bring their sound pressure gauge to the games and get some hard data!!

I have audio readings (db) at WGS going back to 1991..............99% of the games I attend I have readings for.

I may have misjudged Alpha's level of dedication. What were your best WGS readings? If you started a petition to have that info displayed on the Griz vision, I'll sign it.

Granted these cannot be equal since all 3 were measured from different points in the stadium and all 3 would be louder on the field.

In order:
1995 SFA game from south end zone
2009 App St game
2000 App St playoff game in OT and 2007 EWU

Even with the data it's still far from being truly accurate. In order to do that you would need to measure from the same spot for the entire game and make averages or at least see the highest measured noise levels for each game. I only take a few measurements when I am guessing we will be loud.

I never had a measurement from the end of the 2009 App St game that is the only time I have ever been in WGS and heard noise like the 95 game. I was in the NEZ and up higher than I usually sit but it was loud when Quick dropped that last pass the place blew up.

The hard part will be getting him suited up and down on the playing field during the game with his equipment. Sound levels can be tough to measure in a static situation let alone a dynamic one. Sounds tend to bounce off some things, get absorbed by other, etc. You best put a meter in the helmet of the opposing offensive line to get a measurement where you need it. I am sure they will agree to this. So take a SWAG and call it loud. I played basketball in high school in some loud gyms, and I don't ever remember hearing the croud.

ps Don't forget to compensate for temperature.

Good points.

Temperature, wind, location, situation, down and distance, quality of opponent, using a parabolic mic or not using one are all things that can effect sound level.

Hey now, I actually dated a girl last spring a few times because she said she could fix my iTunes account I had all screwed up for the past year and a half. She did and that was that.

I guess I'm just surprised at the nerdery shown on eGriz. Calculations, measurments, data. :thumb:

For those of you that are interested... I will probably be doing my senior project on occupational noise exposure for coaches & referees at college football games. I'm working out some of the logistics, but I am planning on doing it next fall.

Bump. I'm finishing my bachelor's in occupational safety & health, & beginning my masters in industrial hygiene.

Congratulations, man. For your project, you should probably refrain from using coaches from 90% of the BSC as subjects. On average, their jobs are probably quieter than mine on Saturdays.
