Dear thurman murman:
All I want for Christmas is a safety who can make the play when he is IN position. This does NOT have a f.....g thing to do with cover 2, 3, 4, or the dreaded... MAN UNDER. I don't care what the coverage is or where our db's are lined up at the snap of the ball...My point has ALWAYS been with ball skills when the football is airborne.

uke: You can look that up also...but it would be a waste of your sanguine surveillance seconds... Your long, boring post did not deal with the problem...ATHLETICISM. The thresh hold for pr.....g up again like this is miniscule...trust me. I haven't seen Whited play, but I can assure you if he's all that, he'll be getting his shot. :egriz:
You know your are right. I bet the coaches, you know the ones that get paid to do this, would love to have you in for the day to evaluate the safeties and tell them which ones should be playing. I am sure they would love to have you show them all the other players that are better than the starters since they just can't figure it out.
One thing you are failing to understand. The coaches want the best players playing. Why wouldn't they? To them, this is a business and if they don't perform they can be fired. So I think it is safe to say they will play the best players. And wouldn't you know it last year that was tully and hermy by a long shot. I know that is so hard for you to believe because it is oh so easy to sit back on egriz and say so and so is better or maybe so and so should move to safety because they would be the best safety since timmy. Guess what, you are wrong. And if you think you are more qualified than those making the decision then perhaps you should get your resume to the head coach or AD.
Hermy has shown his athletic/playmaking ability his first year. What changed? Well I think the simplest explanation would be his injuries, no shut down corner, a new coach, and the loss of most of the starters around him. That being said, the purpose of my post was not to talk the safeties up, but rather to put the true situation in perspective for those with less football knowledge. The lack of knowledge on how a division one secondary operates was simply too astonishing to not be addressed.
As to whitted. Time will tell. So far he has done nothing to show that he will be great. He does show potential and I hope he competes and pushes the current starters. And guess what? I bet the coaches hope so too. And if he does show he is the best I can guarantee he will start and the egriz armchair coaches will finally have a theory that worked out. But of course if he doesn't start it is a conspiracy to keep the two starters in place or the coaches got it wrong and should be replaced by a candidate voted on by egrizers.

I agree with some of your points. I disagree with some of your points. I agree with Rimrock too. I think it is the " I want to clarify something for the less knowledgable football fans" attitude that some of the "pro starting safeties crowd " displays that bothers some posters. That kind of football snobbery is a little "childish" don't you think? Here are some thoughts concerning what you posted on this subject-
* yes a better offense in 2013 will help the overall defense. It won't help the safeties be better players but it will help the team win even if the safeties have another poor year.
*yes lack of safety depth killed the Griz last year. They had two season ending injuries(Lebsock, Coogan) during early September. That limited the options in dealing with Hermy/Tully.
*yes the safeties coach, Leon, was too old and ineffective. But he was Delaney's age so what does that say?
*Coach Pflugrad knew we had trouble at the safety position after the 2011 season. He brought in a JC transfer. That is a clear indicator of his thoughts.
*Hermanson had trouble before any injury issues supposedly came up. He looked bad in the SHSU semi final game in 2011,the South Dakota game and the App State game. Just look at the tape. He is not great in "space" and he has trouble against the more athletic players.
*Tully just can 't tackle very well and he is out of position a lot.
*yes coaches want to put the best talent on the field but some just can't evaluate talent and make mistakes. That has been happening since the beginning of coaching. There are just too many examples of big historical mistakes to mention.
*the Griz will be a much better team in 2013. This safety issue will play its self out which great. E-Griz needs to move on from this "dead horse" issue soon.
Thurman, keep up the good posting. The vast majority of readers appreciate your information and know that it is terrific. Only the babies, of which there are a number, will react negatively. They think they know alot about football, even though it is obvious to knowledgeable people that they don't, and will complain and attack the posts of knowledgeable posters who disagree with them.
Obviously, a better offense helps keep the defense off the field, and keeps them from getting tired as the game progresses. More depth also helps.
Having younger position coaches is more important than having a younger head coach. Position coaches are the coaches that interact the most with the players, and get to know the players better.
Don't know what Pflu thought in '11, but bringing in another player is not necessarily an indication that the position is in trouble.
Hermanson was very much impacted by his neck/disc problem and toe problem. He had off-season surgery, I believe. To indicate that his injuries didn't impact his play is ridiculous.
Tully and others need to improve tackling and be in better position at times. To say Tully can't tackle is ridiculous.
To say our best safety talent wasn't on the field last year is utterly ridiculous. Tully and Hermanson will start this season too, barring injury or some all-american dropping from the sky.
Yes, egriz needs to move on from bashing the safeties, in particular the starters.
