coverage

I wonder if O'Day would consider taking a page out of Moo's book over at WSU. Since the students are gone from Pullman over winter break the Cougs open their Pac 10 schedule in Spokane. Missoula is not Pullman, but with the conference schedule starting during Christmas week moving the first couple games to Billings and/or Great Falls might be a good way to boost attendance and support for the team in areas that don't get to see a lot of Griz BB (and take some pressure off of Missoula ticket buyers).

WASTED GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY--BOB MESEROLL BLOG

Pretty much sums up the blog written by Bob Meseroll bog in today's Missoulian. The Athletic Dept. more specifically the SID (my word) have missed out on a golden opportunity to promote Griz BB and get butts in the seats. The CGF game may not generate much interest but how in the hell can he (SID) not put SOME effort into promoting Wednesdays game against another PAC-10 opponent, Oregon ST? It's a friggin shame that this excellent group of young men and coaches do not get more support from the local populace. And the student body participation is a joke.
Football may be the crown jewel of the Athletic dept. but BB is coming on strong but they need better support from local fans as well as the student body.
Meseroll covered it much better than I can but the essence of the article stated that this community is missing out on an entertainment value that may not come out way again.

Noted, but check your just keep winning and they'll come even if you tell them not to, pard.

You're welcome,

Ashley

Ashley, with all due respect....eat shit. no, no, just kidding. Understand perfectly but folks round here are missing some great BB if they don't make a point to take in a Griz game.

Wow! Check your mood swings and my understanding your desire to accelerate the process, pard.

You're welcome,

Today's Missoulian hasn't quite gotten the message about tomorrow's game. Only two "local" articles today talking about Breske being a finalist for UNC job and Osprey bringing back their manager next summer.

Breske may be OK news.....but the Osprey manager a lead story on Dec. 14th!!!! Give me a break.

Why doesn't E-Griz jump on the bandwagon and post the scores and schedule of Grizzly basketball on their home page now that the football season is over. I agree with Mousegriz that the Missoulian does a very poor job of promoting Griz basketball. Why not a human interest article on Qvale and Selvig and their years of competing against each other when they were younger and now their years together of being teammates or how Tinkle has made inroads into California with his recruiting and what are the ramifications of recruiting with the win over UCLA. Or, what is the Grizzlies record against the Pac-10 and what were our biggest wins and upsets and who were stars of the game for the Grizzlies. Just some food for thought.

I have brought new people each game and the comments I have heard most is that for them to get good seats they have to join the GSA and or pay $20.00.

Gordon is doing an awesome job, thank you.

Who runs the Roundball Club and are there weekly lunches or breakfast deals?

I just sent an email to O'day to see if the athletic department to see if they would be willing to work with us. As soon as he gets back with me I'll let everyone know. Let's see if we can't make a change for the better.

Grizzly Roundball meets six or seven times a year. Small group maybe 15 to 20 in attendance. We meet for lunch either at Paradise Falls or Gordy Fix's bar. All the coaches are there and the last 15 minutes or so is devoted to Coach Tinkle talking about past or future opponents. Really very little in the way of "inside" info although he does give updates on incoming recruits.
Good opportunity to just press the flesh with the coaches. You do get an opportunity to better understand the philosophy of who is starting and why and why certain rotations are used at particular times during the game. It has been great to watch Tinks and his staff mature as coaches. Tinks philosophy is to teach thru positive reinforcement rather than negativity. Some coaches are just the opposite but what works best with Wayne suits his personality better.
The $500 contribution goes towards recruiting budget. As has been pointed out on the board our recruiting budget is the smallest in the league. Anyone wanting to join the roundball club is encouraged to contact Julie in the BB office.

I'm sure you all saw the little message from Tinkle to the fans to come out and support the griz. The link is here on egriz i beleive and on montanagrizzlies.com as well as face book. Forward to all your friends and lets get some folks to the game. Glad to see the U do this.

Dancingbear, this is an example of lack of coverage. I lived in Missoula until summer of 07. I am even friends with Tinkle, Hill, Julie Tonkin, and O'day yet did not ever know this existed. I only knew of GSA, but do not like the some of the politics and rules involved with it. Organizations, memberships, and clubs, etc dedicated solely to mens basketball, are things I can get behind. Most of the general public are not educated on any of these things regarding basketball.

All we ever hear about is everything involved with football. Maybe in the next get together this group can chew Tinkle's ear regarding all this. Other than GSA area there organizations, clubs etc out of towners can be part of maybe for less $$$$ than those in the area? If someone were to contribute/donate how can they be assured the $$$ will be used for mens basketball only? I do not know what kind of financial status most the basketball fans are or what they can afford. It would be nice to know there is something average every day fans can do to contribute when and if finances permit.

Maybe the basketball office can put together some kind of literature to post as a bulletin on egriz, facebook, etc.

Anyway, keep the updates coming as we get them. I just might use time off come Thursday and give the basketball office a call myself.

Egriz is a tremendous vehicle to spread the word about the basketball program. Unfortunately there seems to be a disconnect between the University SID and egriz or at least seems one does not know about the other. I would venture to say that many, many more people visit egriz daily than go to MontanaGrizzlies.com. I think mostly the nature of the beast. Not to knock MG.com but there mission is to support all the sports programs at the U. Egriz focus is towards football and beginning to be more focused on BB through dialogue in this format. Perhaps Chris or someone in the SID office can be proactive in getting the word out about such organizations as Roundball club which only supports the BB program.
An issue that came up a few years back when LK was still in the program and BB was starting to make major noise the powers to be recognized a need to compensate the coaches better. A private funding effort was put forth in the community. I, along with many other donors, contributed major dollars to the fund and it was never heard from again. Rumors have circulated as to where the money went but nothing substantial was ever brought forward. I think this alienated many donors and they have refused to come back. I'm not suggesting anything illegal occurred but it has just died a quiet death. It has left a sour taste in the mouth of many supporters.
Having said all this I am sure there are ways that fans can contribute to just a specific sport but one would need to contact the AD's office.
There are additional ways that fans can support the BB program. An example would be to donate frequent flyer miles to the program. As you look around the country you see many foreign players making major contributions to programs. Most recently we saw #33, from Portland U. can't remember his name, light up the Griz from three point range. He was from Europe I believe. BB has become popular in South America as well as all of Europe and now even in some of the African countries. Our coaches need to go and see some of these players to recruit them. Tink's has great connections in Europe but the staff needs to be able to get to them. A great way to help is thru FF miles. Yes, I know our Australian connection didn't work out to well but there many excellent foreign players that would love to come to Montana. Lets face it U of M is not going to get the three star recruits. We need to be able to get some of the gems that are not front and center. Our coaches have demonstrated their ability to get top recruits like Will and Jamar and Billy Reader.
Sorry for the short novel but it's late at night and I can't sleep waiting for the Griz to crush Oregon St. tomorrow night.

Great idea...how do I go about contributing my miles? Just used most but have about 26.000 feel free to use them if I can get them to you

Thanks Blgsfan, I have sat on the sidelines far to long. We have a great product to sell and it's a shame more people aren't aware of it.

GrizLA, I am working with one of the coaches to get some miles transferred. We need to stay in contact so I can get you to the proper person.
