coverage

GrizLA, it is my understanding that as long as we are not providing financial assistance to a player the NCAA is fine. In addition the suggestion for FF miles came from one of the coaches. I assume it is being done at other schools. In a way it would be like subsidizing a coaches salary which is not a violation of any NCAA rule.

I believe this has been done with football. It's like a donation for the sport or to the qb club or basketball equivalent. Sometimes the donor just uses his miles to get a ticket for a trip by a coach, as opposed to transferring miles. I assume the donor is able to deduct anything.

Maybe Chris and E-Griz could set the tone by updating Grizzly basketball scores on their website. The last update was 11/19/10 when we beat Montana Tech.

It would be great if Chris were able to set up a rolling tab, don't know what else to call it, that would be like you see rolling along the bottom of CNN news screen. Could be used to announce game times not just for BB for all sports.
With almost 10,000 members egriz seems to be the preferred provider of information for Griz sports. I would venture to say that if the athletic dept. were to look at site "hits" egriz would be way out in front of Montanagrizzlies.com. Don't know if I'm stepping on toes here but the whole dialogue here seems to be methods to improve communication with the outside world. This would be a good way to get the ball rolling.

Hey, we're trying. For video highlight packages, with our current setup we need the game to be locally televised (bigskytv.org doesn't count). The only basketball TV game so far has been UCLA, and that was tape-delay on a station we don't get, so we had to wait until we could get a copy.

We are working to improve our basketball coverage. In fact, I'll make you a deal: We'll keep working on our basketball coverage, and you work on filling Dahlberg every game like you fill Washington-Grizzly Stadium. I was at last night's UM-UGF game, and I'm pretty sure I didn't see you there. :)
Gordon any chance Montanagrizzlies.com will have some information on the Mini-packs that are available again? I can't find anything about them on your website, or griztix? Thanks.

The number one thing that will bring large crowds on a consistent basis is hosting the big sky tourney a few years in a row.
Look how attendance changed for the football team after a few years of playoff games.
when was the last time the griz hosted the tourney???
just my two cents.

Great posts, to add my 2Cents its the same old problem, attendence rises and falls with the product on the court or field. No amount of promo's will get a fan such as myself to make a twenty mile round trip
in the middle of the winter to pay x number of dollars to watch the Griz get an ass whipping.
That changes when people, myself included, start to realize that maybe the Griz actually have a good team
and are worth watching.I did and glad I made the trip. And I will continue to do so...

Great post, pard. Winning breeds attendance. It breeds it all the time, everywhere, and without reservation or exception. Hell, winning is like a promiscuous lady without the knowledge of oral contraception or other preventative measures, and attendance is like her government-funded love children all over the globe.

Winning helps a lot, but making it a place to be at, is also very helpful. Winning certainly does help it become the place to be at. I remember the good old days in the late '70s and early to mid-80s. After 1978 where they hosted the tournament but lost it (maybe because they moved the students to let Boise State and some other school's fans to sit in the student section), attendance still climbed until it peaked in 1982, the Griz did not host the tournament but attendance still grew during those years after the 1978 season. It was the place to be at and great entertainment. Students loved it because there was nothing else to do.

So, to make it the place to be at, you need to pry them away from their computer games, tv, and gambling at casinos. back then, there weren't any computer games. tv sucked back then (not as many basketball games on the tv to watch so you go watch the game instead of tv). Heck there weren't as many other things to do in town back then. There weren't any gambling casinos back then (wasn't legalized back then). All games were pretty much friday-saturday EVENING, except for maybe one thursday-saturday evening games (wsu & nau).

So, how do you make dahlberg arena the place to be on thursday or friday evening (or even wednesday - friday afternoon)? That will be a tough thing to do. Winning I do believe is the number one way to start and be consistant at it. Once you are consistant at winning, the fans will come and support you. Make gambling illegal again to get rid of the casinos would help. ban computer games and even those games on smartphones. Just to many things for potential fans to do.

I love to gamble and video game as much as anyone. I found the time to go to GRIZ games when I was back in Missoula. I find the time to watch or listen online now. Time is the beauty of basketball. It is only 2 hours or less usually to play a game. Also a true college basketball environment is more intimate and fun than most anything you can do with other college students (the other thing can wait until after the game).

Yes, we know how much you love basketball, but there are not enough of you around. For the Griz to gain higher attendance levels, UM has to go after the more casual basketball fan. That is really hard to do when there are so many things to do in Missoula that did not exist back in the '70s and '80s. Many people partake in so many activities than what was available back then, it makes it hard for them to find the time.

I know someone that decided not to come to the Oregon State game just to watch a Celtics game. That is a guy that UM needs to fight for and keep as a fan. NBA games like that weren't on tv as often back then, so less competition as there is now. UM needs to make their product more valuable than that Celtics game (or any other professional sport team or other college sport team for that matter). And certainly more than these dang casinos that show every sporting event around and gamble at the same time.

To make a team more valuable, you win. Winning attracts the media. then the media brings it out to the rest of the population that reads, watches, or listens to that media source. then they show up. Of course, I have seen teams that won but were somewhat boring ( Blaine Taylor teams of the '90s kind of fit that bill somewhat - my opinion only). So, UM needs to not just win, but have exciting players to watch. that is what UM had back in the 70s and 80s and early 90s (1982 is pretty much the peak attendance year).

Thanks! I looked on Montana Grizzlies.com just yesterday, and couldn't find anything. I'll be over Monday morning. Does the four-pak include the Cat game or not?

G
That is a great deal for 4 games. I'll pass it along. I got 6 casual fans to go to the OSU game...think they might be hooked!

My question for Montanagrizzlies.com is....Why is it that one week before Christmas is this just getting out to the public? This would have been great stocking stuffers for Christmas. And I'm not picking on you MGc but what the hell is wrong with the sports information dept. if their not providing sports information to the public? Communication, communication, communication. I'm surprised they can even find their way to campus. If they had to exist in the private sector they would be in bankruptcy.

68: I was wondering about the Cat games myself, and the answer is MSU and postseason games are excluded. Sorry.

Evizzerate: That's outstanding ... do we get an assist for the Tinkle video?

dancing: Great questions, which for various reasons I can't answer. I sure wasn't excited to hear about this promotion from a message board.

Regardless, this is a great deal to catch some exciting basketball.

Thanks, Gordon. I figured the Cat game wouldn't be included, but it was worth asking. I'll get four other games.
