These are great highlights and this goes a long way toward accomplishing what we are trying to do. But the first thing that JUMPS out is this is NOT A COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT. This is the most attended game of the season so far and this looks like a low rent semi pro team because of our seating layout. The admin truly killed the golden goose of BB when the moved the students behind the basket.

Start watching @1:05 for what a real college bb environment looks like. Don't watch too long though or you'll have to suffer through the highlights of the Griz getting homered and AJ getting blocked.

The admin needs to get these comparisons shoved in their faces until they realized what they earn from the "premium seating" that they took away from the students would be tripled if they had a REAL environment that would fill the stadium. The low rent Semi-Pro environment that has been cultivated over the last 12 years has robbed the university of revenue, talent, wins, and recognition that goes along with having a packed house with a real home court advantage, and a real college atmosphere.

http://www.montanagrizzlies.com/news/db.aspx?n=1806&m=36

Our admin treats those seats like they're on the fucking wood at MSG or Staples.

Engstrom and O'Day ought to be pantsed on sight every single day and the results should be placed on Youtube until they change the seating. Any students interested in getting a bunch of Youtube hits should consider it. Pants the President and AD? Sounds like a meme to me!

As for athletics, particularly regarding basketball, I agree the marketing could be better to out-of-state alums. But you have to consider the ROI of such marketing: since most of us cannot get back regularly for BB games like we might be able to for football, the return on investment to advertise to us is very limited.

This is where the athletic department needs to think "guerrilla marketing." The Alumni association has the emails of tens of thousands of Griz Alumni around the nation. They also have an established network of alumni coordinators in cities througout the country that organize the Griz-Cat football parties.

The Alumni association/Athletic department does not ask for any help from the alumni coordinators in marketing Grizzly BB road games. They need to lean on this network of Griz fans to help market to out of state Griz F\fans. All it takes is a quick email to let people know when the Griz will be playing their area. The alumni association has a great platform that makes it easy to email hundreds of alumni.

I plan on sending emails out when both the Griz and Lady Griz are in Portland to play PSU...Though I doubt most alumni coordinators do this around the country. Are you listening montanagrizzlies.com? This is CHEAP marketing, and I for one am more than happy to help out!

Go Griz

Hey dub..........you're not telling any Griz fan what is not already known. The AD tried a few years ago to get the students back on the floor and it failed. Probably multiple reasons but lets work on ideas that have a chance in the short term of being accomplished.

There is no question that there is a void in our marketing of the BB program. Whether it's Learfield Sports or the SID something has to change and the only way we can facilitate that change is to be vocal and positive in our approach. There is already a movement from both within the University and outside interests to bolster attendance at games. However with the students gone until the third week of January and the two most important home games of the season coming up over the New Years Holiday it is going to be up to the locals to get out and support the team. Our biggest challenge will be Northern Arizona and Weber, both of which will be here over New Years. And both are afternoon games, not the best of circumstances but we need to get out the crowds.

Guys, we've been trying and covering this team for a while now. Now, I've only been here at KECI since September, so I don't know the whole history of things. But we've run highlights from EVERY game, home and away thus far. And road games are not easy. Hopefully we have an affiliate in these places to shoot, but as was the case in San Francisco the local team may not be a priority. Assuming we can get them to send us highlights, we also have to deal with download issues (depending on formats it may take us a while) and time changes. The Idaho game, for example, was an 8 PM start, and it takes folks on the IDaho end at least an hour to shoot and edit stuff, then they have to upload their stuff, and I have to download when their done. It can take a while-I was not fully done getting Idaho highlights till 10 the other night (still got em on air). If there is no affiliate, we have to hope to roll off an internet broadcast, but quality is needless to say not good. I'll do it most of the time-I figure something is better than nothing for Griz hoops. The only two times we failed to get highlights the night of a game were UCLA and Utah. UCLA was on tape delay and we could not get satellite feed coordinates to patch into since it was not live, and with Utah we had got them to late for our 10. In each case though, we aired the video the next day.

I can't guarantee we will always have them (IE for the Griz women this year at Riverside there was no TV affiliate there and no way to get any highlights), but we'll try our damn hardest to get them.

Beyond that, all these highlights get posted to our website for viewing (nbcmontana.com) since we have to post our nightly sportscasts. We've run postgame interviews after each home game, and in the Oregon State game I posted all of our unedited sound, and more. Heck, after the UCLA game, I went to the Missoula airport as the team arrived back into town and interviewed them as they got off the plane!

I agree this team is a big deal. And whether on my end at KECI or elsewhere I don't see anyone minimizing them. I know hoops is a different brand than football is and there are differences, but I'll be dumbfounded and disappointed if crowds don't continue to grow as we hit conference season. I mean, football sells out for a division two Western State or a bad 1-AA team like Idaho State, but Dahlberg struggles for half capacity for a team that may be on the verge of winning the conference again?

I'll be damned, KECI, there are some GREAT highlights on your site!

http://www.nbcmontana.com/sports/index.html

One suggestion, if you added a dedicated tab for Griz BB highlights by game and maybe expanded each one out to a minute or so past what you put in the broadcast, it would go a LONG way to increasing foot traffic on your site.

Unlike football, Griz hoops doesn't have any media outlets making much effort toward video coverage. You guys have more video coverage than the University does! The U only has highlights from the two Pac-10 games. That other local news outlet has highlights, but yours are far more crisp and high quality.

This is a situation where you can come in and immediately corner the market on Griz BB video coverage.

ZborgKECI your input is much appreciated. It appears that you are doing everything in your power to promote the BB program. Hopefully your efforts will not be in vain. Keep up the good work.

I think one way to improve the attendance is to create a more inviting atmosphere for the fans. For one thing the half time entertainment is truly lacking. I have covered this in a previous email so I won't belabor the issue here. I think the whole seating arrangement and pricing structure needs to be reviewed. Maybe it is time for the AD and the administration to step up and move the students back court side and attack this issue head on. So what if you piss off some of the long term supporters. If they truly support the program they will come back. We need to create hype for this team and get the fans back.

Tonight was a big road victory for the team. Lets get creative. Everybody grab a friend and bring them to the game. If you are a season ticket holder and are not going to the game make it a point to get your tickets to someone who will attend. We need suggestions as to how to get unused tickets in the hands of young people who would love to see the Griz play. Send an email to Jim O'Day. Commit to yourself to do something between now and the opening of conference to make a difference. As for me I'm going to the Caribbean but I will make sure someone is sitting in my seats. Sorry just had to throw that out there.

I'll be adding this to MontanaGrizzlies.com soon, but I wanted to put it here first since you asked for it.
Thanks Gordon, much appreciated. that is a good deal on tickets.

Not sure where this will go, but it helps Univ of Co get some more fans and interest. They offer a few promotions for weaker teams to boost numbers and atmosphere. They offer 4 general admission tickets for $20.00. I have also seen quite a few promotions from various colleges offering tickets with hamburger or hotdogs, nachos, and soft drinks.

Granted they are not making top revenue for these games, but it does make more money than they would have otherwise.

Jaredkuehn, I passed your idea along to someone in UM Athletics marketing, and got this response:
Did you direct them to Jodie Moreau in Alumni? She would be the person for them to talk to.
So, I emailed your suggestion to Jodi. Hopefully this helps your idea find its way to action.

UPDATE: Jared, expect Jodi to be in touch with you.

I went over to the Field House this afternoon, and got the four-game package ... only it was $28 apiece, not $24. I mentioned what had been posted on eGriz, and was told, "Oh, well, that isn't what 'pops up' on the computer."

I hope you got the reserves for $28, because a single game GA is usually $7... :?:

Yes, I got reserved seats (the cheapest ones in the building were all that was available in the mini-pak), but it still was sort of a bummer to find out the price was not as advertised.

'68griz: That really sucks, I'm sorry that happened to you. If it's any consolation, and I'm sure it isn't, I guess I got bad information too. Here's the original PDF for the promotion that was sent to me by Grizzly Marketing.

I'll complain about it and see what happens. Again, sorry.

It's okay, Gordon; I might never have even known about the four-pack if you hadn't made your post. It was a Christmas gift, so a few extra dollars was okay, just kind of disappointing.

Serious question here. How can Weber State get their audio guys on bigskytv broadcasts, yet we cannot get Mick calling our games on bigskytv? What is the difference?

The explanation I got from the ticket office is the promotion was supposed to be for non-conference tickets, so they add $1 for conference games. Still a pretty good deal, though, $2 savings per game, almost like getting a game free, and no standing in line for tickets.

Thanks and I will take those suggestions to the higher ups. Understand a lot of those decisions in regards to website design are made beyond my paygrade and expertise level. At the very least I'll learn how to attach video of raw highlights to our game recaps. If ya have other suggestions, questions, or just wanna shoot the breeze, send me an email or hit me up on the blogosphere (http://zachborg.blogspot.com/)

Believe me if it were up to me and my colleague Kayla (who for the person who complimented me I say thanks but she deserves as much credit as she is just as dedicated and responsible for our coverage of this team) we'd be at every game or away. Unfortunately sports people don't run the world ;). And like I said, I can't guarantee we'll have good highlights of every road game. Good luck getting an LA or Denver NBC affiliate to go shoot a Fullerton or Northern Colorado game for example. But as I said, we'll always try our hardest to get them. I'm sure we're like every other broadcast station in this state-we want highlights for every game (running a full screen scoreboard is kinda boring video after all), but just because we can't get them doesn't mean we're neglecting the team.

Like I said, I just hope fans show up to watch this team. I'm not trying to pump sunshine or anything like that. Right now they are deservedly so this big of a story. Unfortunately, if crowds don't grow, the fact they struggle to get anyone to come out to games despite the fact their so good is going to start to overshadow some of what they are/could do.

Oh, I agree that $2 off per ticket is a good deal. I just think I was a little misled, that's all. I bought the tickets anyway, so....

It's my understanding that Learfield controls the rights to the radio broadcast and won't release it to BigSkyTV. I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard.
