Speaking of Bobby Ball, can someone explain what Bobby Ball is? I see it referenced from time to time, but have never seen a good explanation of what it is. Thx.

Play good defense. Run the ball. Don't turn it over. But the Hauck haters have adopted it as some kind of derogatory term to describe if the Griz lose a game and don't throw it 50 times.

I've also heard it to mean an emphasis on not taking shots downfield or getting the ball to playmakers. While yes, I did feel frustrated last year in particular at times, that is completely unfair to put on Hauck. The detractors act as if we didn't just have a WR break Randy Freaking Moss' single game receiving record a couple of years ago. As if Akem wasn't an absolute first down machine with Sneed, and to a lesser extent with Cam.

Cam wasn't a gunslinger like Sneed, but the offense still moved it deep. When Johnson was healthy early in the season, he was slinging some good deep shots. But the receivers weren't always getting open and the offense really stagnated after he was hurt. To take this paragraph and re-write history to create a perception of "Bobby Ball" as never taking a shot downfield is just unfair. Yet it persists. What were the coaches supposed to say "Hey, listen, our receivers aren't ready yet. Flowers hasn't developed his ability to hit breaks to get open, and our other guys are still young and developing as athletes and route runners. We would love to knock somebody out and put Toure in their jersey, but the Packers won't let him come back to Montana for that"?

Really looking forward to this year. I only got to one practice this spring, but Vidlak had eyes downfield and hopefully he (or our new addition at QB) shuts a lot of people up about the offense.

Good post. I’ve said it on other threads, Vidlak will be an All Conf quarterback before he leaves here. Maybe even multiple years

Good post.

It would make you legitimately disappointed to know how happy it makes this long time lurker to have one of his first posts get called "good." Warms my eager little heart.

Finishing lower than 3rd each year and losing by huge margins to the Cats. Never developing a group of back-up QBs capable of winning when the rental QB gets injured......

Does that work for ya?

Not to burst the hype bubble on McDowell, but Rivals had him as a two-star recruit out of high school, and he had only three offers, two from from third-tier FBS schools, and one from Southern University.

He isn't in the Ochs,, Drew, Swagger, Sneed, or Johnson league. Just sayin' to keep it real.

No. That isn’t Bobby Ball. Griz clobbered Cats nice in past 2 years. UM has usually had good backups. Not always.

Going to playoffs last 3 years and winning a game each of those years. Top 10 ranking 2 years and 14th last season.

Perhaps true, but he is probably a better runner than any of
them. And he looks fast.

“ McDowell was a 3-star recruit by 247Sports and was rated as the 34th-best dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class. He passed for 1,820 yards and 18 touchdowns, and he rushed for 1,330 yards and 19 scores as a senior at Spring High School in Class 6A, the largest classification in Texas.”

Hey you're back already. That wasn't long at all!
Maybe you can point me to the hype bubble. I mostly see a handful of posts welcoming the young man to the team, enjoying his interview and athleticism, and glad to have more depth behind Vidlak and a true running threat in the QB room. But yeah, better to write him off before he gets here. I imagine his best playing is behind him with no room to shine.

Rivals is the only legit high school ranking site. 247 gives every kid who can fog a mirror a 3-star rating. Have you ever seen a 3-star QB with so few offers out of high school. He might be great, we'll see, but the hype doesn't seem to be rational. Viddie should be the starter.

More of the internet seems to favor 247 over Rivals. Mainly people who don't understand the game or never played it, use Rivals.

This weirdo has done a drama Queen “I’m outta here” as Rosiemustgo and the same exact one as “thirdandlong” yet here he/she is. We are so lucky!

As usual, you don't know what the F you are talking about. What does the "internet" have to do with it? Rivals is the first, and most accurate site. They employ three times the number of regional evaluators as 247. All college coaches know that 247 over-hypes marginal kids, and use Rivals instead. But, keep using 247 to fuel your hype of kids that Bobby signs. I have provided the true evaluations of 2-3 recent signees by including their Rivals info. In each case, 247 had them rated as 3-star kids, and Rivals as 2-stars. If you prefer to live on hype, fine. Your nose is implanted firmly up Bobby's dirt track, so you have zero objectivity for anyone who knows football. Oh, playing Ivy League football 60 years means nothing to elevate your credibility.

Actually, I don’t believe any star system is meaningful for a school like UM and never cite the stars of players. The star system is for rookies and never played the gamers like yourself. And, Growler, you are older than I am.

I was legitimately enjoying the last few weeks with him gone. No one to ruin threads arguing with Hoops, just good old fashioned football talk, some humor thrown in, it was nice. Looks like this site will take another dive for a bit, yay :(

My memory ain't what it used to be, but I don't even remember Spring and Summer. Straight from Winter to Fall. I must have had a good time though. No scars, I ain't in jail. Time flies. Must be Griz football time, right?

Just so you know, 3 low tier fbs offers are better than 30 fcs offers. That's the reality of the fcs.
