COACH STITT SHOW TONITE

We're ten weeks in, including fall camp. Nothing is static, kids learn and grow, even if it comes in trial by fire like it was for Chalich and now Simis, that's why they're on scholarship. Stitt may be stubborn, but not stupid. He'll go with his best chance to win.

Honestly, the best possible scenario might have unfolded unknowingly....that is, giving Simis an additional 6-8 weeks to absorb the offense, combined with simplifying it somewhat and adding some protection. Perfect storm develops...BAM! 6 TD passes.

I'm sorry but I need to see more out of Simis. UND isn't exactly "Elite", if he puts up another great performance against PSU i'll be a believer.

Not sure NDSU without their best db and CP or Liberty were elite either.

Yeah, I hear ya. I mean, they were only the top rated defense in the entire Big Sky going into that game.

Not only that, but they beat the same PSU team that he seems to think is the gold standard.

UND Defense

UND Against PSU, PSU Offense got
Rushing yards, 97, Passing, 150, 247 total

UND Against Montana, Montana Offense got
Rushing yards, 160, Passing, 328, 488 total

Simis just tied the University single game touchdown record against one of the top defenses in the Big Sky. I think he will play well against PSU and will secure the job for the rest of the season.

I WOULD be curious to see how Brady would perform in the "simplified" strategy....although I still believe that Simis has a much higher upside potential, especially given what he brings to the table from a running (or threat to run) perspective.
Brady did not "get worse" in the Cal Poly game. He increased his pass completion percentage from 55% against NDSU to 63%. However, there was a significant change in strategy. Instead of a few long, overthrown bombs, Brady was trying a larger number of short passes. His pass average declined from 14 yards per completed pass to just 9, while the number of passes attempted increased from 55 to 64, with completions increasing from 30 to 40.

Brady actually improved on key metrics, but, the shorter pass strategy also resulted in a decline in total passing yards from 434 to 353.

Stitt was clearly trying to get away from useless "overthrown" long balls. Indeed, during Brady's time of play against Liberty, his average pass declined again, from 9 to 8, while his pass percentage declined from 63% to 54%, or just about what he did against NDSU.

The problem with increasing the number of short passes, an increase in interceptions from 1 (NDSU) to 3 (Cal Poly).

Makena brings a completely different pass profile to the Grizzlies.

Depends on how you define "get worse". He stopped throwing/completing long passes. He threw more INT's. He threw off his back foot. He threw with happy feet. He missed wide open receivers. He and recievers were frequently not on the same page. We excused all that in the NDSU game because he managed a miracle and pulled out the win. Not so lucky in his next two starts. I've seen enough of Gus to know I prefer Simis behind center.

None---Zero---QBs on the Montana roster can throw the long ball as well as Simis. Watching Simis I see him with some problems dealing with crossing patterns. But once he overcame his first game jitters during the last game he threw some very very good footballs. Passing on first down and running on second down threw off some of UNDs defense and made for a great offensive out put for the Griz.

I have a sneaking hunch we will do some more offensive quirks and it will tend to throw off PSUs defense. Rain pouring down will let us find out if we are mudders or also rans. I think if we execute our game plan we will win this thing. Don't count out Stitt and beleive he is slow, the man if very fast and smart.

Think about this, if Simis struggles against the Vikes, who I believe, are the most complete team in the Big Sky, Egriz will bury Simis and Stitt faster than a speeding bullet. And at LEAST one thread postgame will be dedicated too, "If Brady could play than why didn't Stitt put him in?" I'm just saying.

But of course. Monday morning quarterbacking is what eGriz does.

+1. (8 days a week)

I get some amusement over all your "simplified" offense comments. Haven't seen a so called "complicated" offensive scheme yet!

I agree with you here. What's interesting, is I think people interchange the terms "arm strength" and "ability to throw the long ball". Gus has a better arm for sure, but Simis seems to have the ability to place...that's key at any level!

I just need to do this...so forgive me...

"Obviously, sir, you have never played the game"

figured somebody would do it and I've been in a board review course for the last 3 days and needed to let my frustrations out... :D

Truth be told, not one of us has any idea, played or not, what this offense entails. The complication of the scheme has to do with the players pre snap reads, blocking schemes and reacting to the defensive players.

Root's sports analyst, Taylor Barton, gave a little mini-seminar at the UND half-time explaining how this was a "simplified offense," and had a nice piece of game video that he could demonstrate, in slow motion, how everything that he saw in that first half had been simplified so that Makena only had to look in one direction and that his potential receivers would be lined up on a moving axis so that he only had to look up or down, not side-to-side in order to find an open receiver. Stitt said as much in the post-game interview.

Simis wins, Simis starts against ISU. Until Simis plays below Brady's level Simis will start the rest of the season. Brady had one good game. Simis had a game that went into the record books. It's Simis's job to lose at this point.
hit the nail on the head

Bummer I should've watched halftime. That would've been good to see. Thanks for that. I'll watch it when I get back.

Perhaps this week he'll get to look both ways when passing. Would that be an unreasonable assumption?

Looking both ways then back to the original look can throw the entire psu team way off.

Perhaps he needs to just throw it during one of those "looking both ways" periods.

Simis grins all the time like he is having so much fun out on the field. This makes his teammates like him for what he brings, seems to make them play better for him and the team! His grinning at tired Defensive linemen while they are trying to "get" him makes them lose heart and gas out early.

He definitely has a "field personality." Interesting to see.
