I just happen to think the powers that be are looking to bring Thomas back in to coach up our secondary. I could be wrong. is it bad that he has coached high school? I don't think so. it's not like we hired him as a head coach. I don't see how a guy with nfl experience after playing at this level could hurt a unit that has struggled mightily.
would you guys not think tru could help your defense in the future even if he never coaches a down of football at any level. I sure think he could.

Being a good player, even a great player, does not necessarily mean that person will be a decent coach. It doesn't hurt, but it's certainly not a guarantee.

He's been the HC for Ballard (WA) for the past 3 years, turning that program around from 1 win per season for the 3 years prior to his arrival to 8-3 last year making it to the WA State playoffs. He resigned yesterday. But the more believable rumor is that he resigned to take the HC job at another Seattle area high school.
I think it would be good if we got him as a position coach. big IF
and hey, UNLV replaced bobby with a High School HC and had a better record this past season!
It just seems Cst fans are excited for a lot of second choices. Choate was not the first choice for the selection committee, although I think he was a good choice and will probably be a good coach. Choate's OC, Messingham, was not his first choice either. Now Choate will have to settle for a second choice (or worse) for a secondary coach. Cats fans sure have a lot of optimism for so many second choices and NAIA coaches is all I'm saying.

There are many good coaches out there in the world, being the first choice of a committee doesn't always mean you're the best coach or the best fit (a lot of people interview well, I've hired many folk that interview well but are out-performed by others on the job), or that the second or third choice is a dud not worth getting excited about. Ash was not our first choice either (Dale Lennon was, followed by Jerry Kill), but he ended up winning more games than any other Bobcat coach.
When Urban Meyer was a linebacker coach at Illinois State, he called Toledo HC Nick Saban to ask if there were any coaching staff positions open at Toledo. Saban never called him back. Urban Meyer was not Saban's first choice, and not even considered.

Thus there is some optimism.
I like JDoub's comment. Hauck was replaced by a HS coach and that guy had a better record.

Some of the staff is exciting, some not so much, but I think that might be due to being unknown to us. I was thrilled about having a guy like Alexander, but I'd be just as thrilled to Joey Thomas come back. They're both talented players who obviously can coach kids and are respected in the coaching world.
Mostly, I'm happy for a change in direction. Ash was a good coach, but would never be a great coach because he wasn't willing to put in the work. The product was a known quantity and it wasn't getting better. We don't know what we're getting, but know what we had. We just want to see if maybe we can do better than what we had going forward.

I'm not sure why folks are getting defensive as I stated above I think Choate was a good hire and will be a good coach regardless of whether or not he was a second choice. You seem realistic that you got some good coaches and maybe some who are just okay. Seems many other cats fans are already thinking national championship is all and I think they're getting a little ahead If themselves.

If we overcome a few things on defense and settle our offensive line depth, then 7-4 or 8-3 is realistic as well. I don't think anyone has said National Championship. I mean I saw a fan over here say Choate won't even make it to spring ball! :roll:

So the Cats find, hire and the lose a coach but meanwhile the Griz have made no hires with two vacancies. Is coach Stitt waiting for somebody specific or the coaches conference or what'? Anyone know anything on our end?

I read BN a lot, obviously. I feel I have a good read on the general sentiments of just about every topic and discussion on BN. It's always fun to come over here and see how it is twisted, warped, and misconstrued. I always get a good chuckle.
I'm not sure I saw anyone saying we'll be a NC team next year, or that losing Alexander is only going to help us. You may find a post or two but the vast majority say otherwise. But if one were to simply read egriz about the matter, you'd find a completely different opinion.
Obviously no fan can ever be fully educated on the situation, but after doing some half-assed research on all of the candidates we had for HC, Choate was my top choice. I liked his defensive mindset, something we've lacked for a few years, and he seems to genuinely want to coach in the Big Sky and at MSU. A guy who legitimately wants to be here will always have a small advantage by that merit. I like his coaching tree, his small but not-to-be-ignored ties to Montana, his familiarity with the Pacific Northwest. Just seemed like a good fit, regardless of his HC experience. Hill was probably my next choice but I wondered how a Missouri guy would translate to Montana. He was the most high profile of the group I'd say but not sure the cultures would align.
