I like Colter a lot, I think he covers the Big Sky well and frankly I am jealous of all the content he puts out on the Cats and I hope his efforts to expand his Griz coverage are successful.
If there is a critique of his work, I think it is that he occasionally is prone to hyperbole and occasionally he treats the opinion of his sources as the standard of FCSs football knowledge when it is just one opinion. An example of this was during the coaching search last year. His biggest ties to the program source wise seem to be from the Hauck/O'Day era and sometimes that opinion line comes through.
I like Ty, I think this is a great hire for the Cats, and no one can argue that the position he has been most responsible for during his time here has been a huge strength of the program. To say he built the defense is a stretch to me though. He took over a highly ranked defense and maintained a high level that never got quite to where it was when Breske left. Th himself said our D has been good, not great.
I think it was time for him to move on because he needs to diversify his resume a bit if he wants to advance to the FBS level like he has said in one of his interviews. The truth is I don't think this is a game changer for either program that some fans on both sides are suggesting. I think Ty improves the Cats defense and I think Stitt is more than capable of hiring good assistants to get this program where we all want it to be.
I think when Ty didn't get the job, him leaving after this season was probably more likely than anyone admitted at the time and I don't think that is as big of a deal as some have made it. If Ty doesn't like Stitt, that is fine too. There is more than one style to build a successful football team, they don't have to agree. I don't buy the line that this was all about Ty wanting to work for Choate, and anyone who thinks that Choate has better college football coaching connections than Stitt is willfully ignoring the number of FBS coaches who talk publically about their respect for Stitt and their work sessions with him. Heck, the Minnesota Vikings came to UM this summer to brain storm with him.
I think there is still some angst because he came from outside the Griz family tree, and the only way he can convince those fans is to win. I hope he is successful.
