As a Marshall fan and outsider here are just a few of my thoughts.

Marshall had 2 of their biggest games while in IAA against Montana. And I couldn't imagine 25 years later still being in the SoCon, with the likes of Furman, VMI, The Citadel and Western Carolina. Marshall outgrew those schools and rivalries in the late 80s/real early 90s. And left them in 1997. Marshall's last year in the SoCon we were out spending the next school Appy State by 13 million dollars. The facilities and budget were getting lopsided. If we would have stayed we would have done exactly what NDSU is doing. And they do it because they have absolutely no place to go.

Marshall has played more than one school that no IAA ever has a shot at playing at, two of which are The Horseshoe at Ohio State and Notre Dame Stadium. Both we should have had wins at. Marshall was ahead of Ohio State 19-17 in 2004 with 8 seconds to go and B10 officials call a phantom holding call with 2 seconds left and give Ohio State a chance to kick a 55 yard FG which they make. And well Marshall just went to South Bend and dominate both lines and leave with a 26-21 win.

There have only been two instances of G5 conferences knocking off Top 10 programs on the same day and Marshall was involved in both:
Sept 20 2003: MAC Conference: Toledo 35 #9 Pitt 31, Marshall 27 #6 KState 20
Sept 10 2022 Sun Belt Conference: Appy State 17 #6 Texas AM 14, Marshall 26 #8 Note Dame 21

I see some of you all put down the bowl structure as a glorified participation trophy. All the while for the last 12 years the IAA title game has been played in a mid sized soccer stadium with the highest attended game being 21,836. And only 4 different champions Eastern Washington 2010, JMU 2016, Sam Houston State 2020 and NDSU the rest.

No way Marshall could have done the majority of what has has happened since 1997 as a IAA. Some of you may point to Appy knocking off Michigan in 2007. There is a reason that has only happened once as it was an anomaly.

I for one sure wish we would move up. I hate playoff football. I can’t wait for a shot at the coveted Van’s Appliance Sun Mountain Sports Bowl……oh wait.

Someone mentioned Utah State. They start the year with the 'honor' of playing the #1 team in the nation at their place, and are down 48-0 at the HALF. The Tide pulled the dogs off and only won 55-0. Embara$$ment? YE$. Don't know what they took home, but I hope it was worth it. The next week they play lowly Weber State, at home. A commute game to say the least. Lets not take anything away from Weber State, as they have kicked ass in FCS for years. Utah State's only score was on a kickoff return. The offense has been truly worthless. They lose 35-7. Utah State has been FBS for a LONG time. Maybe the MWC will pull a Sun Belt Conference move and dis-invite Utah State, like they did Idaho, and extend their hand to Weber State. Makes more sense that inviting Montana, and the albatross around its neck Montana State. The old Montana Board of Regents mantra, 'ya want Montana, ya gotta take MSC, too!'
Look at all the upsets this past weekend. Christ, even Nebraska finally fired Frost. Never say never. I just think Montana's chances of getting an invite, from anywhere, diminished since Saturday.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. A BSC school beating a MWC team is always good for any big sky member. Utah State appear to be in a down year, but has had good years in the MWC. Just like Hawai’i has, AF has, Wyoming has, and Fresno has. There is. Lot of parody in the league. Does Weber and their attendance make a lot sense vs two teams that pull 15,000 plus to their games? I know we don’t like MSU bur getting a STEM school with a large enrollment and LA school that receives lots of research grant money isn’t exactly a bad draw.

That was obvious sarcasm, but your point is still valid. I always thought that going to a dozen FBS qualifiers would create a legit "big boy" playoff. We still have to see how it plays out (sooner rather than later, hopefully), but that seems like a pretty good number. Sure, most of the other slots will be filled by contenders from the P5 conferences. Why not? The best 12 teams should be in the mix. You're G5 and want in? Win lots of tough games and move up in the power rankings.

And let's face it. At least a third (half?) of the bids to the FCS playoffs are little more than "participation ribbons" for conferences whose teams have little or no chance to advance. (It's not like basketball, where a team can get hot, go on a run and be the Cinderella.) How many people on here thought it was a good idea when the FCS playoffs went to 24 teams?

Utah St. made the mistake of not starting the season with games against (lowly) Notre Dame and Texas A&M.


If the Griz had Utah St. at home next week, the Griz would be them worse than Morehead St.

Utah State is a good school and usually has a good football program. If it works out that we join the Mountain West, we should be proud to be associated with Utah State.

I don't know if the Pac-12 can get their money/tv act together. Bwahahaha! I get it! The bowls have sponsors. Losers. Nobody cares about the bowls besides the players, coaches, and fans, and people who want to watch football over the holidays, and the networks. It's a smart move to have the real DI championship on a Sunday and air it against Week 18 of the NFL to maximize exposure.

All good points. As for the Pac-12 and TV money, that's an absolute crap-shoot. My "insider" (a game official and consultant, BTW, and a cousin) has since retired, so my info is a bit dated. But as of a year so ago, he said that the Pac-12 office in charge of TV and sponsorships was utterly dysfunctional ... due to clashing egos and private agendas (not incompetence, he assured me). Unless they have closed ranks, or otherwise straightened that out, I can't be very optimistic. Perhaps facing dissolution of the conference will shake some sense into them.

The ones we're now losing to programs like Boise, San Diego State, Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona, Colorado State and about 60 others, simply because those are FBS programs.

Are you honestly suggesting NIL opportunities would be less attractive if we moved up? That would be a new take about which I'd be interested in hearing more.
