Big Sky Commish Responds to UM/Sac Game Controversy

An open letter to Commissioner Wistrcill:

All us Griz fans know the game with Sac State is over. The record books will show that Sac won and the Griz lost. That is a fact and it can't be changed. I'm writing to comment on your "tweet" which, in my opinion, was very disrespectful to Griz fans who have an extremely legitimate concern over a blown call near the end of that game. You dismissed these concerns with a "tweet" basically suggesting that the refs didn't have enough camera angles to get the call right. Just in case you didn't know, not even the NFL has 17 camera angles. However, in this case, getting the call right didn't require 17 camera angles. All the camera angles that ESPN had showed the receiver was out of bounds when he caught the ball. Clearly out of bounds. If you looked at the replays, and I certainly expect that you did, you know the call was wrong. The correct response from you is not some meaningless "tweet" denying the existence of a problem. The correct response would be a statement from your office admitting the refs got that call wrong and pledging, on behalf of the conference, to do additional training with the officials to try to ensure that such an egregious mistake does not occur again. To simply blow us off, as you did, is a guarantee that the argument will go on and on with you, rather than the ref who blew the call, as the bad guy. Unless you view it as part of your job description to take the bullet for incompetent refs, I can't imagine why you would want that.

"The official, who was in correct position, made a judgment call. Replay official reviewed it and couldn’t find indisputable evidence to overturn it. Play stands as called. Wish we had 17 camera angles, but we don’t."

Where do I start? It wasn't a "judgment" call. The receiver was either in bounds or out of bounds. His right foot was probably on the line well before the catch. His left foot was mostly out of bounds before the catch. It wasn't a close call. Yes, as you said, the official was in good position, and he completely blew the call. The game was on ESPN2. There were lots of cameras. Referring to 17 cameras in your comment was just plain stupid. Only 1 necessary to get the call right.

I could see in real time on TV that the receiver was completely out of bounds. How could the ref, and the replay official, not see that? Truly pathetic. They both should be fired. They are not qualified to work for the Big Sky.

This cost UM the game. There were other bad calls by the officials. I have supported the Big Sky, and its brass, for decades. Ask my friend Jon Kasper. I have supported the conference commissioners, including Wistrcell, for years. No more. I am over that. I am not going to support Wistrcell anymore. His excuse was just plain stupid.

As Jon knows, I am a big mouth and influential poster on egriz, and have been a top lawyer in Montana for decades.

Wistrcell, please don't talk down to us. We are not stupid. You are supporting refs that are not good enough to ref games in the Big Sky. Move them on.

Other bad calls were a PI on UM on the UM sideline, where the SS receiver clearly pushed off. Also, a no call in the endzone late where the SS defender backed into the UM receiver. Yes, the receiver also went down.

How about the horrible dirty play on the hit by 46 on Lucas Johnson's head? That is the dirtiest play I have ever seen in college football. I played college football. 46 should be further sanctioned.

Wistrcill, I am going to be watching you now, and watching for anymore stupid comments like the one you just made. And I am going to be speaking up. I talked to Seth Bodnar tonight for 10 minutes. I am going to start putting in my two cents with him, over you and the conference.

Yes, you guys got screwed on that call. However, every team in the Big Sky has lost a few games over the years they should not have because of poor officiating. It is a travesty to these young men who go out there a play their asses off each week and end up losing because of this horrendous officiating. In the Cat Vs Weber game their were some blatant missed calls on the Weber kick returns. It seems like every week this stuff happens and it never gets better.

The member schools need to get together and give Westcrill an ultimatum to get this f fixed. Everett is right, schools are going to start looking at alternatives if it doesn’t get fixed real soon.

While true. Those missed holding or block in back calls are actually subjective and they happened in the first half. This call is not subjective and it was the most important play of the game. Make the correct call and games over. Griz win. The two are not equal.
