No, I don't think Stitt should be fired, but it was a mistake to hire him, and in another couple of years it will become obvious to all of the posters who think he can coach at this level.

There were over 75 applicants for the job, and some Division II coach with a 64% lifetime W/L record is the best we could hire, because he invented the legendary "fly sweep" that we ran 2-3 times for losses last year???? Yeah, I know that Joe Glenn came from Division II, but he also won two National Championships there, and was a national power every year. Big difference!

Amazing that it took this long for someone to post a comment based on the brilliant observation that great offenses and defenses are not mutually exclusive. Just because you like fun, wide open offense doesn't mean you're necessarily neglecting the defense. If the Griz did develop the best defense in the FCS, I think some posters would want the 1957 Woody Hayes offense to compliment it. Yeah, it would work, but it wouldn't be necessary.

Do you have a list of championship teams with wide open offenses and shut down defenses?

Ohio State in 2014-5 was one.
And last year Seattle had a dominant defense. Super Bowl champions, right? Wrong! Beat by a team with just a good D. Stats wise the Cheatriots D was behind the KC Chiefs, Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills. Good defense and good or great QB play is needed, not necessarily a great ground and pound rushing attack. NDSU has had one of the top 2-3 QB's in the country, maybe the best.

In 2006 the Colts had the 26th ranked defense in the NFL. They won the SuperBowl with a great QB. Peyton Manning. btw - they were dead last in rushing D that year.

I can also remember the Ravens when they won their Super Bowl with an outstanding D and just a decent offense.
There is no magic formula to winning it all in football.

Football is entertainment and winning programs are entertaining. But I do not want to go year after year to watch Alabama beat LSU in a FG kicking contest. I love Oregon vs USC just as much, if not more.I thoroughly enjoyed Clemson this past season.I do want to win a NC, like every Griz fan. I would like to see us dominate like NDSU is now. I don't believe we will ever see that happen no matter who is the coach or how he coaches. What NDSU has done the past few years ( and possibly for one or two more) is a rarity. Like Tiger Woods making 142 straight cuts on the PGA tour. Something we will never see again in our lifetime, I would imagine.

I do believe that Stitt will make our program relevant to the NC discussion. We will be in the title game in his 3rd year or 4th year as HC. Both us and NDSU have a huge advantage over the FBS. As long as we can get home field throughout the playoffs, we should be able to get to meet the Beezon in Frisco most years. We'll win some of those and lose some.But with Stitt's offense it will be a whole lot of fun going along for the ride - you'll see.

And if not, I will be here on Egriz, admitting I was wrong.

No, I don't. Delaney set this program back many years. But Stitt has shown me nothing in his ability to turn it around. We should be good in 2017, IF MANY OF THE HYPED PLAYERS CAN DO IT ON THE FIELD. But, I still say we will never go deep into the playoffs using Stitt's offense.

So in 2017 we will field an offensive juggernaut using Stitt's offense and recruits, but we won't ever be able to make a deep run in the playoffs because of Stitt's offense and recruits...is that pretty much the complete contradiction you're stating? If so...would you be willing to bet me $500 that the Griz don't make the semis during Stitt's time at Montana? Let me know.
