Available Coaches?

Ok ok! I'll do it.

Seriously though whoever is hired had better be a SPREAD coach, this system can't be thrown out and started over... Again.

Wonder if Jonathan Smith would have an interest? Knows system and players. Although it would pay less probably then the BSU gig, it would still be a HC job, despite having no experience.

I hope you get a good coach, but honestly I don't think that Hawkins is your guy. I've talked with one of the former players just recently about him here in Boise, and when Hawkins was the head coach here, then Chris Peterson was the OC. And it's the consensus of the team that the success of the team mostly had to do with Peterson, not Hawkins. And subsequently, Hawkins didn't do much at CU and was fired after a few years. No, I wouldn't hire him here, you can get someone more capable.

Being in Denver, I can honestly say, without doubt, "Please, no Dan Hawkins!"

Too bad Glenn and Hauck are both at other jobs now.
Anyone for Tim Hauck?
Who on the current staff is the most qualified, or best fit?

Whoever it is, it needs to be someone that knows the offense we have been putting in.

How about Jonathon Smith? Pry him away from Boise!

Brought that up 8 hours ago.

Considering Leon Burnett for the interim at present.

he just rolled into town. Not a good fit. No connection to the current recruits who are going WTF right now. I'm pulling for Gregorak. As posted elsewhere Beers would be the obvious choice.
For a dummy you sure are a smart guy!

From an outsiders prospective, I would suggest Kraig Paulson. I think he would be a good fit, first because he LOVES the Grizzlies and never wanted to leave, and second, because he is a great FCS defensive coach (but doesn't do so well at the FBS level).

Sorry, but we don't want any new coach changing our defensive approach. Paulson, would not be a very good choice amongst GRIZNATION.

No kidding... a new offense wouldnt be able to duplicate the school record amount of three-and-outs from last season... ;)

Can imagine if Ty instilled his ass-kicking attitude into the ENTIRE team (ie the offensive line) on an every game basis. We'd be monsters.

You might be thinking about the year before. Way worse!

It would be way too hypocritical to replace Pflugrad with a guy that recently made it into the police blotter himself.

I played for Hawkins. He is an awesome coach. I'm always surprised to read the vitriol spewed by folks who quickly forget that each of these coaches they are talking about are actually real people. There's a lot more to a coach's success, or lack of it, at a particular place.

Hawkins rolled into Willamette, which had been a cellar dweller for a couple of decades. (Incidentally, their previous most recent success was in the 70s, when Tommy Lee played QB.) In mere seasons, he's knocking off the top ranked teams, then winning the conference title, then going to the championship. Obviously, he didn't do it alone, he had the help of great assistants, too, but he was tremendously successful - in a place that had zero facilities or football culture at the time.

He moved on to Boise State. Who hired Chris Peterson? Oh yeah, Coach Hawkins. That was a pretty good coaching decision, wouldn't you say? Of course, they marched on to success, and the success continued after Coach Hawk left. That doesn't take away the things Hawkins accomplished as a coach. He helped lay the foundation. He was the first to plant that seed, that Boise State could contend for a National Title. And now, the seed has matured.

People are so often critical of Hawkins decision to play his son Cody at QB. It's a tough place to be, as a coach and a player. The coaches at CU kept meticulous stats on every single practice, completions, etc. Cody's team mates, not the coaches, consistently voted him to be team captain. He won the job, he lost the job, it was a big circus and media frenzy and distraction. Who knows how Cody's career would've turned out if he had gone instead to BSU, where he also had a full ride offer? He had other options. Not a lot of BCS people were knocking down Kellen Moore's door right out of high school, based on his size, but he turned out to kick quite a lot of ass. Things didn't work out at CU as Cody had envisioned, but Griz fans of all people should be the last to write off a small QB.

All these people are human beings, doing their best. In the right place, they kick ass. In the wrong place, they don't. CU wasn't the right place for Hawkins. It didn't work out. He will move on, and do well, at the next place that gives him the chance. It would be awesome if Missoula was that place.

Hawkins would be a great Griz coach. You could reasonably expect a few FCS titles if he took the helm. you could expect fun, creative football. People have suggested a lot of other great coaching candidates, and many of them deserve close consideration. Hawkins should be considered, too. Don't be so quick to write him off because of what happened in Boulder.

Missoula has everything in place for success.

This thread has gotten real interesting and the names are intriguing.

1. Dan Hawkins: Was talking with a colleague of mine today who follow cfb really close and he made a good point. Hawking was a good coach at Boise State and he just could not hang in the Big 12 at Colorado. However the kids he got at Colorado would be fine FCS players.

2. Dennis Erickson - I like this name and would bring definate sizzle to the program. However are his Bobcat ties too strong for him to think about the Griz Job.

3. Paul Wulff: This makes sense as well and the man can win at the FCS level.

4. Dave Dickinson: While would be a hugely popular name with Griz nation the lack of collegiate experience makes it not a good fit.

5. Mike Van Diest: I personally think this is the guy. He runs a tight ship at Carroll, is a proven winner, recruits players at Carroll that are FCS quality, and knows how to recruit.

Other names that could be interesting:

1. What about Jerome Souers? Are the ties to UM from the Don Read days still there where he would leave NAU.

If you want a coach with some name value but needing to rebuild their career what about these two names:

1. Dave Wanstad
2. Tyrone Willingham

First what a shock today of this news!! At a loss for words at the speed in which it took place. Hopefully we all get more insight as to reasons.
Honestly I fear what direction Engstrom will take this. If we see small scale hires at AD and at head coach we may just be starting a long down hill decent in athletics. Engstrong to me has not shown that athletics has a value.
Has UM looked bad as of late in news yes it has but Engstrom has been at the helm and that can not be over looked. Has Engstrom been Pres long no he has not nor was Pflu head coach and he lost his job. I think Engstrom needs to go as well. Start over fresh from the top.
I fear what negative long term effects this ALL will have on UM and UM athletics. I do know it all must be figured out ASAP.
I do hope we see people hired that have progressive thinking and a vision of things ahead. The time to rebuild starts know with these hires.
Sadly I can see the next couple of years for us Griz football fans being pretty rocky.
