A move to the fbs guarantees never winning a ncaa football championship.

But it does guarantee some financial security to universities who are cutting costs. That's more important right now than football championships. If athletic depts can cover more of their costs through moving up then the University can focus money in other areas. UM is cutting jobs all over the place because grant money is shrinking, department budgets are being slashed, and otherwise. For most schools there are more important things than winning an FCS championship.

If the University would stop trying to buy everything West of Arthur they might not need to cut so many jobs.

I do agree with you though.

true. however it increases your chances of winning NCAA BB games, enhances money, enhances national exposure, and improves regular season matchups.

Each school will have to pick the path that fits them best. it won't be the same answer for each.

Wyoming is building research partnerships with conference members, esp CSU. In fact, many FBS conference s are beginning to build Academic research partnerships and writing joint grants and pooling academic resources. Smaller regional universities, like many FCS programs are harder to work with.

Big Sky actually should do more of this give the presence of MSU, UM, Cal Poly, and UC Davis. Other big sky universities don't really help in this type of endeavor. MSU Ag programs programs pairing with the Wyo/CSU partnerships would be a big help in chasing grant money for example

I've always had aspirations of playing in a no-name bowl in the Sun Belt.
I've always had aspiration of playing in an NCAA level devoid of any good programs.
Welcome to the Sun Belch.

The Sun Belt is highly entertaining to watch. You guys knock 'em all you want, but there's some teams in that conference that put on a show. Same as watching the MAC. Watching Louisiana-Lafayette's 2011 bowl run was entertaining as hell.

Ragin cajuns were damm good the last two years and easily a top half of the FBS program. That program has serious speed and would have crushed any FCS program. hell they would have been in the top 3 in the MWC

Not to mention watching Northern Illinois and Toledo last season.. give these "small" conferences credit.. they're doing some good things with limited resources.

For $$$$ we'll probably need to move up along with most of the BSC maybe? If not, Division II will be happy to see that level plussed up. At least they, Div III, and the NAIA will still have a bracket! The playoffs will be sorely missed. :(

I really only see 4 maybe 5 BCS schools that have facilities, that have the academics, and a possible market that might draw an invite

UM
MSU
Cal Poly
UC Davis

Maybe Idaho if they ever decided to invest in facilities but so far they dug their own hole. I consider them Big SKy now I guess

You don't have to move up and there are drawbacks to FBS. My only point is that nobody is going to move down to FCS and the big sky, except maybe Idaho, and that the decision is complex.
