I can't believe this little gem has fallen through the cracks. You're right.. bring on the Northern Colorado Bears! Bring on the Idaho State Bungles!

Other than bringing a substantial stadium addition online in record time the most important factor working in Bozeman is attitude. Saddled with a UM prexy who advocated putting football on the shelf for 2013 there's increasing reason to wonder if it might not be the country cousins who would lead the way into a new competitive conference - dragging UM with them. What once seemed a pipe dream may have legs... Laugh at your own peril, but the Cats now have 4,000 more seats, better winning stats and a far more aggresive group of alumni and financial supporters than the Sunbelt bound Vandals. The last two years of D-1's musical chairs have proven that nothing is impossible...
I realize what with last years turmoil and first losing season since the 80's, the new "in thing" for a few Griz fans is to lick the cats balls

Can we please wait for at least one quarterfinal win before we ever discuss the relevance of MsU football on this board again?

Those weren't the names that came to mind although I did forget that UNC finished ahead of us last year. I was thinking of the emerging power the last few yeears that hav either tied us for the championship, beat us or give us as much as we can handle EWU, UND, MSU, Cal Poly, Sac State etc. Either we are going backwards the last few years or everybody else is getting better......

Mostly the former, a little of the latter.

3. Georgia Southern was always the red head step child of Georgia, now upstart Geo State passes them up.
4. So it is a matter of "prestige" moving into a bottom feeder conference creating the illusion of parity.
5. Some on eGriz have p*nis envy and perceive these moves as "putting on their big boy pants".
6. Some on eGriz regret that we haven't jumped into the ranks of Idaho and New Mexico St.
7. Some on eGriz forgot moving up requires about $15 to $20 million today (adding additional sports, more scholarships, more new and expanded facilities, more staff, higher salaries...).
8. Some on eGriz forgot moving up would also require an additional $5 million or so each and every year to maintain the expanded athletics required.
9. Some on eGriz seem oblivious that the Sun Belt, Conf USA, MAC, etc... is about to be demoted out of the real FBS and become the "new" FBS Division II of college football.
That pretty well sums up what has happened and the reactions you're reading here. So if you have an extra $30 million or so to pony up the Griz could also jump up to join the new FBS Division II. Or, we could wait about three more years and join them without many of these unnecessary expenses.
:ugeek:
4.) It isnt a matter of prestige, its a matter of survival. There have been 3 FBS additions to the Appalachian recruiting region in the past few years, brand new programs.
9.) The Sun Belt will not be demoted. They, the CUSA, MWC, will not drop from 85 scholarships, and they wont play in a division in which others dont offer the full allotment of scholarships.
In addition to all that, App will be able to play, at home, the Marshalls, ECUs, Wake Forests, all of our natural rivals that we could not play before because of the FCS label. App has much room to grow, and the Sun Belt is only a fraction of the equation. The SB alone is a big step up in competition, the OOC will be gravy.
So, poo poo all you want about Montana making the jump, but dont pretend to have the remotest what is best for App.

Onion, I don't pretend to know what is best for App. What I posted are some of the reasons they are moving up. The situation there is significantly different than it is in Montana. You are surrounded by larger schools, and smaller ones trying to become pretenders (Geo State, etc...). As you point out this does have you surrounded by potential OOC rivals. In another post, you provided another important difference; the new $25 million gathered for the App State athletic dept. As a result, you are in a position to move up, and are being pressured on the outside to do so.
I'm happy for App State, and confident they'll thrive in their new conference. Yet I still maintain FBS is in flux and the end result is obvious. When it's all said and done there will be two separate (and very unequal) FBS levels. The SEC, Big 10, Pac 12's... want the whole damn pie. The Sunbelt and their ilk will be tossed a few crumbs to provide some out of conference scheduling but they are destined to be the new Division II of FBS football. Ultimately FCS will go away too with the top tier joining the new FBS Division II, and the rest dropping into the existing Division II. The big dogs are already building the wall, the resulting division of FBS is inevitable. Good Luck to the Mountaineers. I suspect they'll do well. Send us $25 million and we may join you sooner rather than later.

Wow! Where are we going to come up with that kind of dough? Uncle Denny? Football is the minor issue. Title IX is the killer.... I'm all for it, but I don't see it in the next 5..? I hear you, bro. I have mixed emotions including sadness. I can't help but wonder if App State football will ever be really special again. Some of us just assume/hope that ASU will be the next Boise State, but really, what are the odds? It's been incredibly fun being near the top of the heap for the last 7 years. Three NCs, beating Michigan, and all that. Those were some special times that will likely never be duplicated.

Yup. Too bad from my point of view. Probably going from top of the heap to also-ran. If any move-up team can rise towards the top, it's probably App St. Good luck to you. However, I have a hard time believing that big success can be done in the midst of so many other existing and wanting-to-climb FBS teams. I think App St can go to the top of the Sun Belt, but that conference is pretty weak. I hope App St doesn't end up in obscurity. Plus, not being eligible for the playoffs or bowl games for the next couple years. Bummer.
The way I understand it is that they will both be eligible this year, but not next, because next year will be the transitional year. Not sure though.mtgrizrule said:Why can't App State be in the playoffs this season? If I recall Old Dominion and Texas State could still be in the playoffs despite moving up.
