Biggest question mark for me was Phillips, and I feel way better about him and excited to see him getting better throughout the season. He could end up being a great one, even if only for one year. Injuries in the secondary have me concerned.

Wasn't he here last year ?

I took it to mean a one year starter.

Game plan on both sides of the ball is what you expect from the six rank team in the BSC.
No surprises.

Better about the talent level but worse about the coaching. It is the coaching and unwillingness to adapt that is strangling this team. if it does not change then this season is toast. Can it be fixed, yes absolutely, will it be? I do not believe the coaches believe anything is wrong. Just like the insistence on not playing zone last year. These coaches won't change something until it is beyond broken.

did you watch the game? They were in 3 deep zone just about every time they got burned for a long play. What, exactly, is it that you'd like the coaches to "adapt" to? This offense looks almost nothing like Stitt's offense at Mines. Not ONE fly sweep Saturday. Kept Horner/Simis in to block almost every passing play.

How many fly sweeps have been run in the last two years ?

My attempt at questioning why maybe he didn't play last year instead of....

Question about Phillips, when he took the hit to the head on his run was there a penalty on the play. I thought hits to the head were not allowed. I only saw the highlight when he was hit and slow to get up.

Just curious.

It wasn't flagged. Hit looked hard but legal when watching it live. Slow-mo replay suggested otherwise.

Kind of my point. He's adapted his offense significantly. In large ways.

He hadn't learned and adapted to the offense last year. BG was better.
We saw his ceiling early in the year. We have yet to see Phillip's ceiling.

So, which of these BG games would you consider to be his "ceiling"?

Not to be a smart ass, did that significantance pertain to last year ???

It strikes me that for better or worse, loyalty is one of Stitt's attributes. In the long run, I think players will respect that. I'm sure Phillips benefited from learning the system better before playing...

Yes I watched the Game twice. Was just riled up hearing Stitt say there was no defensive scheme issues on a soundclip on a pod cast today. It was hard to tell if it was supposed to be three deep or not. Maybe it was supposed to be but it clearly appeared to be press man with Vika assigned to cover either the tight end or RB. Everytime. The impression was it was poorly designed scheme not a blown coverage. if it was that blown they need to put some serious hours in as the secondary is completely broken then. Can that be fixed? Yes, with time. If it was blown coverage can that be fixed? Yes, with time. I just fear that if the issue lies with the defensive scheme it will not be fixed until it costs the Griz several losses and starts another spiral. With that said thanks for slapping me in the face and making me step back from the edge as I am most likely just an idiot. God I hope I am just an idiot.

Now that's funny. Never heard anyone wish they were "just an idiot" before..
Better than being a "bad fan."

Concerned we were not able to dominate the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball. We will play bigger, tougher teams.

Liked everything about Phillips's play and his protection. The biggest difference between this year so far and last.
I lost count of the # of times the Valpo QB was picking himself up off the turf or running for his life. Hell,
Picking himself up after a gain, several for first downs. QBs netted 62 yards rushing. Several designed QB runs, having watched the MSU tapes. They had plenty of time to throw the long balls that burned us. Insufficient pressure.

Agreed. Insufficient pressure. And not enough contain on the edge. Not enough early blitzing. I still wouldn't have blitzed Valpo a ton but would have started it earlier than I recall they did. And, somehow, those close calls need to result in getting the qb a half second earlier. The qb or qb's were fairly mobile, even the first run.

It was a good training session for the whole D.

I think the D is going to get there, but I thought they would be closer to "there" on Saturday than they were.

Well boys you summed that up nicely. I would have hoped that they took care of all that in fall camp but ....no lack of talent though.
