After the Valpo game

Concerned we were not able to dominate the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball. We will play bigger, tougher teams.

Liked everything about Phillips's play and his protection. The biggest difference between this year so far and last.

I lost count of the # of times the Valpo QB was picking himself up off the turf or running for his life. Hell, Schye's sack came on a 3 vs 7 rush. Conversely, I think Phillips got hit ONCE while in the pocket, and that was while delivering an absolute lazer to the receiver. I thought the run blocking was improved, for sure, and pass protection was up at least two notches from last year. Room to improve, certainly, but way better than last season...some of those shorter runs were on the RB's. They've got to open their eyes and look for the daylight that was often there.

Noticed that also. Ran right into a blocker with daylight on both sides.

This is what I have been meaning to say. Exactly what I saw. Somehow, the D needs to turn some of those plays into sacks, has to contain better, and has to sustain more of the initial hits. Close but not enough cigars.

Kind of interesting to watch the game 48 hours later and have the benefit of 48 hours of pissing and moaning on eGriz....I made it point to look for things people bitched about....man, talk about overblowing some things.

* complaints about Griz not getting enough pressure without blitzing. FFS, Valpo kept 6 and many times 7 guys in to block...yeah, that's gonna make any D-line's job a little tougher to get to the QB, and yet the Valpo guy was consistently getting knocked on his ass or chased from the pocket. Just need to do a better job of finishing, or contain (I'm looking at you, Favaroso).

* Complaints about our O-line not dominating THEIR D-line from the get-go despite the "huge" size differential. I looked them up: their four interior linemen went 260, 270, 290, 320. That's not small. And eventually the DID wear down, and the results showed.

* Complaints about the run D. Against traditional running plays, their RB's averaged 3.39 ypc. Their QB's picked up some yards while scrambling away from the rush (see above comment about containment), but all in all our D-line spent a LOT of plays meeting the RB in the backfield as soon as he got the handoff.

I saw the offense in Butte during the Spring game and they look night and day better. Reece Phillips played pretty well. He could have a great year if the OL can protect like they did on Saturday. Anyone who saw Gresch Jensen play knows what is coming up next season. That kid is going to be very good as a Sophomore next season and he has all of the skill position guys coming back. The defense had some let downs but I think Valpo made some pretty tough throws down the field that were not easy. I feel pretty good rolling into this week they have a couple of weeks to improve before conference play. I can't wait to see em take on the Huskies! Go Griz!

He totally went for the pick there. He backed off the receiver to make it look like he was open and just couldn't close on em. That was a hell of a good throw. Sandry was expecting the ball to be underthrown because it was 30 yards back. If the ball would have been under throw at all he would have picked it off but.......great throw he got burned.

Mixed bag for me...

Better about Phillips
Same about running game
Slightly better about receivers
Jury out about O-line, protected but kept extras in to do it

Same about D-line and LB's
Worse about secondary, health a factor

Better about kicking games
Worse about special teams coverage

Overall about the same, slight uptick offensively and fall back defensively, won't be making any judgements this weekend but interested to see what a healthy secondary does after that.

Can it be fixed, yes absolutely, will it be? I do not believe the coaches believe anything is wrong. Just like the insistence on not playing zone last year. These coaches won't change something until it is beyond broken.

Biggest question mark for me was Phillips, and I feel way better about him and excited to see him getting better throughout the season. He could end up being a great one, even if only for one year. Injuries in the secondary have me concerned.

This offense looks almost nothing like Stitt's offense at Mines. Not ONE fly sweep Saturday. Kept Horner/Simis in to block almost every passing play.

Yes I watched the Game twice. Was just riled up hearing Stitt say there was no defensive scheme issues on a soundclip on a pod cast today. It was hard to tell if it was supposed to be three deep or not. Maybe it was supposed to be but it clearly appeared to be press man with Vika assigned to cover either the tight end or RB. Everytime. The impression was it was poorly designed scheme not a blown coverage. if it was that blown they need to put some serious hours in as the secondary is completely broken then. Can that be fixed? Yes, with time. If it was blown coverage can that be fixed? Yes, with time. I just fear that if the issue lies with the defensive scheme it will not be fixed until it costs the Griz several losses and starts another spiral. With that said thanks for slapping me in the face and making me step back from the edge as I am most likely just an idiot. God I hope I am just an idiot.
