I remember my uncle, who is very good friends with a UM grad, said the 1996 Montana team might have been a top 5 FCS/D1AA team of all time but just happened to play against a man who nobody could stop and single handily beat everyone.

Griz always seemed to have that happen to them in NC games. In '96 it was Moss. Richmond in '08 it was Lawrence Sidbury (DE). in '09 it was Villanova's Matt Szczur. Always seemed like there was that ONE guy that we just didn't have an answer for.

It goes that way sometimes....

Hopefully the Missoula bars have an answer for the NDSU alcoholics that show up next year. Probably won't win the game , but not sure the bars will have an answer for some of us that show up.

They do. We're called the UM alcoholics.

I wouldn't worry as much about the bars as the bar stools being able to support that much weight without collapsing...

The fat ones are too lazy to travel so the stools should be fine....maybe.

Perhaps Moss hated Montana for what Super Dave and the boys did to the herd the previous year.

^ This.

And that two Butte Boys helped teach Pennington that intentional grounding penalties in your own end zone result in two points for the good guys and a two point win. :thumb:

I think Pizza Hut Park is the first non-FCS or 1-AA venue to actually ever host the chipper. Before it moved to Dallas, it was always at a venue related to the FCS. It just so happened, Marshall had bid on it for a three-year run, and in that same three years, they were really,

UM bid to host one season. I think it got shot down as being a tad on the chilly side.

The host school at Frisco is Sam Houston, though obviously they don't play regular season games there.
The only truly non school related site was the Tacoma Dome at the very beginning of I-AA.

All NCAA Championship events have host schools

Doubt it; Moss was at FSU in '95 trying to stay out of jail. The '96 QB, Eric Kresser, was at UF. Marshall had to get some ringers after we beat them in their own house in '95. The Herd had us for a revenge game in '96 - even better that we were undefeated going in. Moss against our short little corners - no contest. We scored more in '96 than we did in '95. We won in '95 with an outstanding defensive effort - safety, goalline stand, totally frustrated Pennington and the Herd offense. DD led the final drive for the FG, but he was sacked 10 times.

Marshal was also penalized by the NCAA because it had several athletes being paid for "jobs" in the community they weren't really working. The penalty stripped the Thundering Herd of their bowl titles and victories in their first years in the MAC, but did nothing with their IAA national title in 1996 even though the investigation found that that's when the player compensation began. That was unfortunate because Marshal managed to go straight from IAA to IA without a scholarship transition year -- basically because they had nonscholarship athletes receiving enough cash for unworked jobs to pay for school and living expenses.
Randy Moss gets all the attention from the 1996 team, but the Herd was loaded with more talent than they had scholarships for.

The way it was stated in the documentary, I don't really think that Moss hated Montana per se. He just hated Montana on that day because that is who they were playing. At least that is how I took the context of him hating Montana when I watched the documentary.

Agree, it sounded like he was just pysching himself up for the game. Apparently it worked.
