2024 FCS Opening Game Schedule of Interest

So how would you suggest we get the younger quarterbacks more playing time to get them experience?IMO it should happen in the first non conference games but its all about winning so that would never happen unless it was 70 to nothing. Then we would be playing the bench and so would other teams.
Radical idea, but maybe during practice against FCS athletes?

Also, to answer a previous question of yours about money, I just read this about MSU taking a "money" game to go up against New Mexico. "The Cats will open the 2024 season at New Mexico on Aug. 24, and they'll receive $360,000 from the Lobos, who compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (the highest level of college football)."

We make a lot more than that by staying home and playing a team like Indiana State.
Jeez, $360,000 is a terrible payday. I wonder why the Cats even took that - you would think that they bring in almost as much money for home games as the Griz.

A consistently top 5 defense with multiple looks up front and in the coverage scheme seems like they would be far more effective for development in practice week in and week out rather than scheduling a game against the Northern Lights....
Sure, but think about playing an actual game against an NAIA secondary. He'd have all day to throw bombs over the top to really get ready for top FCS defenses.

I have to assume that it is for some amount of "exposure"? I don't really get it either, if I am honest. Its not like they got a home-and-home out of it. And no football fans really care about New Mexico, I don't see it being something that gets the eyes on the screen. Maybe they were having trouble finding opponents that would come to Bozeman for $250,000 or less? Maybe it was scheduled before their recent run of playoff "success," so they were more desperate?

Another idea is to play a collection of local HS all-stars. The very best they have to offer. Our developing DI QB could get valuable experience/confidence and it would really drum up interest within the community. I think people would show up to watch a HS senior return kicks against a DI kick cover team. We could then have a three-ring circus afterward with elephants, trapeze, a bearded lady, and stuff. Something for the kids. It's really a win-win.

I heard if you scratch and sniff a bearded la....never mind, forget I even mentioned it.

Can we then make them try to return kicks against the elephants?

The same way every other team in the nation does. Develop them in practice and the off season. What teams do you see out there that are scheduling easy opponents two levels down so that their young QB can get a start? It seems like it would waste an opportunity for all of the current starters to get tuned up going into the season. I'm not trying to be mean to you, but it seems like you are pretending that it is abnormal to develop a young QB in practice. That is how teams do it.

Vidlak worked well for us and if it was not for Mcdowell where would we have been? Ah Yat with no experince.Probably was the development in the off season that did it for Vidlak.

so how is that been working out for the Griz? Site some examples
I think pretty well. I attended a game in scenic suburban Dallas back in January. Listen, I think at some point, a staff has to recognize that their all-state HS QB recruit isn't likely going to "develop" much beyond what he's got. Maybe that happens in practices, maybe it happens in real games, but they definitely won't know much more about his ability at this level by watching him play an NAIA team to see how far he can throw it to a WR 15 yards behind the safeties. Which, if I recall correctly, was the proposal.

Vidlak lit up the 3rd string defense in the spring game last year, which would be a more challenging task than playing against Carroll, and it didn't help him at all.

I get that you want us to play Carroll and get our young QBs more experience, but those two things are mutually exclusive. The young QBs need to play against FCS teams in order to prepare for playing other FCS teams. That's how it works at this level.

That doesn't make sense though. Vidlak wasn't here to develop, so you really can't blame the Griz development structure for his readiness to play. It was good that his previous teams didn't waste a whole non conference game developing him, because he left those schools. So, for instance, Oregon State or Boise would have sacrificed the entire rest of their team's development to get Vidlak a start.

Again, I'm asking you, do you know of any schools who do what you are advocating for? The scheduling an easy game TWO levels below your competition in order to get an easy start for a young QB that is a backup? I don't know of any successful teams or coaches doing that, but I am open to listening.

I don't recall us doing that for Ah Yat Sr....

Is there TV money ? It's on FS1 plus exposure. What exposure are we getting playing Missouri State?
Exposure? Very few people in NM care about the Lobos. I lived there for 17 years and never watched their games. The Griz got far more exposure playing UW. The Griz got plenty of exposure in last year's playoff games.

Huot looked great in the spring. Humphrey followed Sneed very effectively. Lots of people seem to think Ah Yat looks great. Those are the only guys it could really apply to. Seems fine.

Do you have examples of ANYONE at our level and above doing your plan with good results?

What I am saying is Vidlak did not have experince either. It took a few games to sniff him out. Vidlak did not need developing but Ah Yat certainly does.
