#12 Montana @ Sacramento State Game Thread

I find it ironic that we had to score 51 points just to squeak it out in overtime.
Not being a wise-a**, but thank God that the only stat that matters was 51-48.

'Cause the rest were mostly just crap for UM: D gave up 580 total yards, 412 passing. On O ... vaunted (?!) rushing game gained less than a hundred yards (91). Their 3 fumbles lost (takeaways?) was a big part of the difference.

Still, the Griz were 3 for 3 on 4th downs (all for TD's, which is incredible). Not so good, either way, on penalties: 7 for 67 yards. Sac got 10 for 102.

Bad defense by Hermanson again. I espect my starting safety to knock that down. I applaud Sac for going for 2. This is their best-chance to win.
I didn't think that was bad coverage actually, he tipped the ball the guy just made a great play on it

It wasn't bad coverage, I agree. A big-time Safety makes that play though. Hermanson and Tully are, typically, "just good-enough". They make the basic plays, but don't change games. Hermanson DID make one big-play today, but he also had couple mis-tackles which has plagued him. I give him props for that one big play. He had one other nice hit,who spun off him for another 3 yards, but when the game is on the line, do you really trust him/them? I don't. They are no Hauck, or McElmurry, or Todd Erickson or Colt Anderson or Schillinger. They aren't even a Goichecheax2 or Lebsockx2. It's been a glaring hole in our defense for 3 years since Colt left. All the previously mentioned quality 9 Safeties were Montana natives. I don't care where we find one, but has there really been no good Safeties in Montana for 4 years? I don't watch hs, so I have no idea.

Huntsberger.

ugh, Duh! make that 10 quality Montana native Safeties

I might keep the DVR this game to show my young boys how not to tackle. And yes I never played the game.
cept for Hermey. He was in Colt mode today! I won't miss tully when he's gone.
I never saw Colt whiff on a tackle like I saw hermanson whiff on the qb on that first qb run in the fourth quarter....in fact I've never seen anyone whiff that bad....other than that, solid game.

anderson whiffed frequently and spectacularly.
Did he ever dive to where the player had been 3 yards earlier?

Not sure what the stat was, but it seems like SacSt had great success on 3rd down. That last drive they converted 3 or 4 of them, including the td.

no, usually 3 yards ahead. anderson was very fast, and when he mistimed his hits he flew by in a blur.

Overall, 13 of 22 on 3rd down ... which is pretty decent D. Strangely, the Griz were only 4 of 14 (which truly sucks), but there were those three 4th down TD. (Sac was 2 of 2 on 4th down conversions BTW.)

Go back to 2007 threads, and people constantly complained that he didn't wrap up, and just tried to hit the ball carrier to the ground.

It's not the safeties, it's eGriz.

The SS TE who made the last TD catch is 6'5", 235. The TE who made the 2d to last TD catch is 6'4", 255. Hermie is listed at 6'1", 198. Tully is 6'2", 199.

Anderson was nowhere in the Hauck, McElmurray, Erickson, Huntsberger level of sure-tackleness, IMO, but he was head and shoulders above Hermanson. Hermanson made 1 incredible tackle today. Huntsberger, I think, did the same thing at NAU and took it for a TD. The only other similarly stolen ball I can remember. It was Hermanson's best tackle of his career by far, but he's very rarely lit anyone up. Colt would occasionally whiff going for the big stick, but his big hits would often make a big impact and probably prevented many catches cause receivers bailed out. Hermanson will whiff on easy tackles (frequently and sepctaularly) and no receiver is scared going over the middle against us. You can't honestly consider the two on a similar level unless you are clueless (or Hermanson's mom).

Anyone have the link for the game stats?
YOu must be into self-harm. Why would you want to read them?
Yeah ... trust me, you do not want to know (see above). :( :D
BTW, the Griz lost the TOP stat to, abt 25 min to 35 mins. (But an ugly win is still a win.)

But if you insist on self flagellation, try the ESPN site: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=333060016
Thanks. My one question though, is how did Van have -5 yards? Is that the penalty for not getting on the plane?

Montana Rushing
CAR YDS AVG TD LG
Jordan Canada 17 78 4.6 4 33
John Nguyen 8 18 2.3 1 12
Jordan Johnson 3 -4 -1.3 0 2
Travon Van 1 -5 -5.0 0 0
Jamaal Jones 1 -5 -5.0 0 0
Team 29 91 3.1 5 33

By comparison, EWU has given up 566 yards to ISU and the game isn't over. EWU has 747. First downs are about even: 31 to 32. 55-34 EWU. And then look at SHS and SFA: 557 to 742. First downs 29 to 31. MSU was outgained by NC, by 51. MSU 3d down efficiency was 4-12. NC was 11-18. Kirk rushed for 180. 3 NC turnovers, and 1 for MSU.
