This! 100%.I agree. One of the reasons that Haslam gives in the article, besides the fact that BK has been doing a good job recruiting etc, is that Haslam wants some stability for the assistant coaches. Giving BK a two-year contract offers that stability which means that they will be more likely to stay rather than bolting at the first opportunity.
2 yrs minimum. That gives him and his staff just a bit of stability and a chance to plan and succeed.I understand the concerns about no HC experience; he has yet win a game etc. The program needs some stability now and a one year deal is not exactly stability for the staff or for recruits. I say give him 2 or 3 years vs. just one and that keeps the staff stable and likely keeps BK from moving on quickly
This. 100%I think a 2 year deal make more sense than a 1 year deal even with the lack of head coaching. You can still get out if it is a failure but extend if not.
Yeah, you waste your sarcasm on Old Grizzly. Just the facts, and sometimes those are wasted as well. You ability to understand sarcasm and level of ignorance is not lacking.
I think we should also consider the impact on recruiting. Remember Lamson bolted from Bowling Green because of a coaching change.I agree. Yes that was another point that Haslam made in the article. He was very concerned about the possibility of losing half the roster. Instead BK rallied the troops and got everybody to stay. It was darn impressive.I think we should also consider the impact on recruiting. Remember Lamson bolted from Bowling Green because of a coaching change.
He said that this will be his last job no matter what, so not sure what you're talking about here.He has infused more energy and positivity into the program than Hauck did in his entire second stint as HC. Sometimes you need new energy and vision. BK has it. Recruits and players love the dude and he needs a long term contract to solidify what he is doing to attract and retain players/coaches. UM needs to put their big boy pants on and ink a longer term deal. If he bombs after two years - buy him out like other institutions would. He won’t bomb by the way. Neither U of M, nor MSU would in the current environment. It’s now a league of about four schools. Two of them are in Montana. It just best your rival and go deep in the playoffs year after year. That the world he is operating in now. The bigger threat is him leaving after two years. He will have head coaching experience, success and a lot of suitors. Haslam has a tough gig. He has to start preparing for the next head coach right now. BK is probably going to be a short term HC because of his success and credentials
There's always a chance you're gonna lose players after a season, even if the coach sticks around. Hell, we lost more this last year than I think any other year under Hauck in the NIL era. I've kind of already just assumed we'll probably lose at least Ah Yat and Davis after this season, even if BK gets extended.Yes that was another point that Haslam made in the article. Feedback far and wide is that BK's work within athletics, across campus, around the state, and even in our recruiting regions has been awesome. It's been reflected top to bottom not just from BK himself but his staff as well.
I understand Kent's probably in a bit of a pinch here because I'd assume BK is feeling some pressure to present better stability when talking to staff, players, and recruits. So how do you balance it? It's worth pointing out too that Kent in this article doesn't say an extension is for sure happening, it's something he'd like to see.
Ideally (for me) would be some sort of shorter extension with some triggers based on success (on and off field) for a longer extension - all while there's an easy out / buy-out if things turn into a hot mess.
Lots of coaches say it is their last job - until a giant check and opportunity are floated their way. Nothing against BK. Money talks. I respect your opinion on the contract. Completely understand why people think that way. I just have a different opinion. He said that this will be his last job no matter what, so not sure what you're talking about here.
I just don't think it's too much to ask for him to at least get through a couple games before we even think about an extension.
The entire staff signed up for this when they agreed to stay/join, and a lot of them might retire if we move on, anyways, so I don't see that as much of an issue.
Putting aside the fact that he's said that to a lot of people and I don't take him as the type of guy who would say that and not mean it, the only way he gets that type of offer is if we win a NC, and if we do, I don't care if he leaves in 2 years.Lots of coaches say it is their last job - until a giant check and opportunity are floated their way. I want to see BK coach a game first - maybe work through part of a season before this kicks in as well - but I can also see how some sort of extension can help keep things stable. I lean more to liking this than not liking it but I can understand others concerns too.
Mick Delaney gets more hate on here than I sometimes think is deserved. 2012 sucked but he was handed a shit sandwich thanks to Royce Engstrom. His teams didn't quite meet the standard of what we strive for but he did go 2-1 vs MSU and in 13 and 14 got the Griz to the playoffs. Neither year was super exceptional but he held down the fort and handed off a pretty solid roster to Stitt in 2015 as well.
'You're doing the things we couldn't get Hauck to do.'"
Y'mean like win a National Championship?
The real Athletic Director was Bobby Hauck.
Bobby Kennedy should have to PROVE that he and his staff deserve a longer contract. The Griz are about three months away from the start of that proof, and about three and a half to four months from that point to show the world he/they are better than 13-2. Then the long term contract. Trust what BK says, but VERIFY. Very Reaganesque!
