New University president?

Interesting list of private universities. Now, lets try the same thing for state schools. I bet that list includes the likes of Michigan, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, etc.

One can also research Georgetown University and Patrick Ewing years to see the dramatic impact that the basketball team had on enrollment and exposure. Unfortunately, they have let all they built erode over time, whether it be because of changing vision or apathy. Success without continuous human and financial investment doesn’t happen.
In my mind Georgetown is basically an ivy league school where they put far more emphasis on academics than athletics. And it's certainly not hurting their enrollment.

I definitely remember the Ewing, Mouning, Mutumbo, Iverson days at G'Town....Some of my favorite teams.

What happened? Have they become more strict in their academic admissions?

Total cost is about $95,000 a year. $75,000 in tuition without much of the tutition and fee waivers that the Ivy's provide for low to middle income folks. So it is a rich kid school for sure. UConn and Villanova have taken over that conference.

Does tuition cost impact college basketball?

Probably not at all. Makes me wonder though if the average kid playing hoops has much in common with other students. It is a cool campus but it is crazy expensive. It has been at least 20 years since they were very good and 30 plus since they were dominant. In that time do all those graduates that went there to become lawyers in DC really care to donate? Are they folks that grew up to love hoops?

I think for now he's the only finalist and if his visit today doesn't go well then they may bring somebody else in as well. That's likely to come up in the forum today!

So, if he’s the only finalist, it’s his job to lose, and “finalist” is kind of an inapplicable term. Unless! This stage is like the “final boss” like a video game.

Might've had something to do with John Thompson too.

Sounds like Shinn’s public forum went well yesterday. Sounds like it was mainly students and faculty he fielded questions from yesterday. Several students tried to ask him about program cuts that stem from UM cutting the Irish Studies program and some other dumb major as well. Beyond that he talked about how under his leadership he helped eliminate barriers and streamline the financial aid, registrar, admissions and advising offices at Boise State and it helped improve the student life, which was his main focal point yesterday. Still haven’t seen the full forum. Was hoping there was a recording somewhere but I can’t find one. Overall, I really like him and think we should move quick to offer him the job. I’ll attach a story below that discusses some of the forum yesterday! I’ll also attach the feedback survey as well!

Lots of media outlets now reporting on the Open Forum with Dr. Shinn yesterday! Everything I've read and seen sounds pretty good to me! Sounds like after he leaves today, the working group will re-convene later this week and either recommend to Christian to move forward with Shinn to the BOR, or decide to go in a different direction and bring another finalist to campus. Christian said they interviewed 9 candidates and 6 of the 9 were either current or former University presidents, which has never been the case in all of their prior searches. Christian also said the BOR will hold a special public meeting when the time comes to vote on the new president. They're hoping to have this wrapped up within two weeks!

Thank you for all the yeoman's work you have been doing to make sure this community gets the updates.

Sort of like Montana is last in the nation in # of black people per capita.

One would imagine that that could make Montana less attractive to some black athletes. Not all, of course, but some.

There are definitely pockets of racism alive and thriving in Montana. I like to believe that the tolerance for diverse views in Missoula is a positive for recruiting all athletes regardless of race or political/religious views.

Wake up Egriz. Don't any of you write checks to the Board of Regents for tuition? How dare Commissioner of Higher Ed bring one candidate for us to review. How do you discern extraordinary from ordinary analyzing one person? That one person in a word is uninspiring. Go to the website above, take a look at this candidate, and use the comment link to write to OCHE and demand comparison candidates. We WANT extraordinary.

Uhh, that's the job of the selection committee.

This is an interesting hiring process.....Am I understanding correctly that the decision is now whether to offer Shinn the position or move on to an unidentified 2nd choice?

That’s my understanding! Maybe we’ll get another weekly Thursday update today. Today is the last day to provide input on his visit and the working group was supposed to convene after he left and decide if they wanted to move forward with him or not.

Here's todays weekly update!

Good morning, University of Montana,

Thank you to everyone who participated in this week’s visit from our presidential finalist, Dr. Jeremiah Shinn. The warm welcome, thoughtful engagement, and sense of shared purpose you brought to each interaction reflected the very best of our university community.

I am grateful that Dr. Shinn was able to experience firsthand UM’s unique and vibrant campus spirit, and I am reminded how strong and connected our university truly is.

Please take a moment by the end of the day today to offer your feedback about Dr. Shinn’s visit through the search webpage. The search consultants will compile the submitted information and your insights will be a core component of our deliberations.

I look forward to providing an update and a recommendation to the Board of Regents in the coming weeks.

Clayton Christian

Montana Commissioner of Higher Education
