The issue with Hauck was not just about offers. We offered some of the same kids for sure that the Cats landed. It was attitude.

Hauck had an attitude that these kids should be lucky to be Griz, that they should want to be a Grizzly and that he and his staff didn’t have to go out of their ways to make them feel wanted.

Vigen and his staff were the opposite. They put on the full court press on these kids. I talked to Adam Jones dad once and he said the recruiting of his son couldn’t have been more different between the two programs. It seems BK is reversing that and using the full court press method and making sure these kids know they are wanted.

That was the difference with Hauck and his lackadaisical effort. No less and no more. It’s not rocket science.
I don’t think UM wanted Jones that much and didn’t view him as a top prospect. I was told that Jones transformed his body after high school and became a much better and stronger athlete. Good for him. He’s good, but was overrated last year. Gillman is away better back. I wonder if Jones would have even gotten into the mix at UM. He has more time to show his stuff. I assume Mellott’s explosiveness gave Jones more openings and less attention 2 years ago. UM knew a lot about Jones. Jones proved UM wrong. I would have thought Green’s “attitude” would have been more important to Jones than Hauck’s. I don’t know Jones’ family or anything about them, but I take the views of most parents with a grain of salt even when I gave first hand knowledge.

I try to never say anything negative about players or their families, because that is uncouth and just not who I want to be. That being said, the narrative that Adam Jones and his family have put out over the last couple of years is absolutely bullshit. Sometimes people say things so many times they start to believe it.

The actual facts of the situation were that Adam Jones was posting online about how much he was loving the recruiting from the Griz, great visits he had, etc. Then the Crews situation happens, who was his friend and teammate, and Jones chooses the Cats. Now his parents are telling people that he grew up wanting to be a Griz, his bedroom was full of Griz stuff, but the Griz staff didn't recruit him or even really try to get him.

How do we know that is a lie? Because ADAM JONES HIMSELF posted online at the time about loving his visit and the love he was getting from the Griz coaching staff. Yea, the Griz had Eli and probably weren't as desperately going after him as if he was water and the team was dying of thirst, but at the time he was very positive about the Griz recruiting him. Crews happened, and everything changed. Now the family has one hell of a narrative that they spread around.

It is dumb, and quite honestly bugged me over the last couple of years when I even hear from my family members about how one of his parents told them the Griz didn't even offer him or recruit him, which is probably not what they said but is how the game of telephone works in a town the size of Missoula.

I am glad for the CLEAR improvement in local attention from Coach BK and the staff, and I'm sure they will be at a lot more high school events locally this year, but the narrative put out by the Jones family has kept evolving to the point that it is just not honest.

Lets take a little trip back through memory lane and we can see if the Griz were putting effort into recruiting Jones....

I wish his family would just say that a lot of people locally were upset about Zac Crews' situation, and the MSU Bobcats were doing a hell of a job recruiting. But to spin it into "The Griz didn't even really try to recruit our son" is just factually wrong.
Thx. That was an awesome post.

Overall, I see where you are coming from with this post, and from what I have seen you are one of the most reasonable guys on here. You always have great insight.

One quick comment; You mention in your post "the game of telephone in Missoula" and I think this has contributed to a huge portion of this. I have known Ryan (Adam's dad) for over 25 years and I have personally NEVER heard him make such comments. In fact, we've had a number of conversations about the recruiting process for both our sons, and this narrative never came up. Just my two cents.

And how would you propose I do that on an anonymous message board? Should I ask him to create an account and comment himself? Common man.

I haven’t followed e-griz much in the last year or so, but I am guessing this is yet another pickle man reincarnation? Some things never change…….
He has dementia give him a break

That is very fair, and I don't know either of his parents personally. I think the "game of telephone" is absolutely a big factor. The person I replied to was one who said that the father had been critical of the Griz not trying to recruit him hard enough. (I don't want to use a bunch of names so that we don't start popping them up in google on egriz)

My sister was at my house last fall and was going off about how she had just talked to the mother and she had said the Griz didn't even try to recruit him and could have easily had him but they were dismissive and didn't try.

While the game of telephone is probably a very big factor in their statements being exaggerated, at some point there seems to be a narrative coming from the family, and it just isn't true. I get that there were a lot of hard feelings among Sentinal parents at that time, but I've been hearing this locally for years.

I don't dispute that you say he never said that to you, and I appreciate your kind words and reasoned response. It is just getting very annoying to keep hearing that it is being said, even if the people down the telephone line are exaggerating what is said.

And the reality can be "all of the above". Perception becomes reality, confirmation bias comes into play and all of a sudden there's a narrative that may or may not be completely accurate. And some people will always believe a narrative even when confronted squarely with the truth. It's just human nature.

All this stuff happened years ago now, and whatever BH and staff did or didn't do, it's all in the rearview mirror. Maybe we all just need to quit talking about it and move on. BK and staff are not going to land every Montana recruit that they want, I'm positive of that, and yet I think we can all be quite happy with their effort level.

And even after saying all this, I'm quite confident that certain posters will continue to argue about how situations did or didn't happen. Here comes 17 pages. Yawn.

Because all Montana kids are equal. Are you literally this ignorant or just blindly loyal.

Yes, I am both ignorant and blindly loyal, but I know for a FACT that I don't live in an alternative universe or denigrate our many Montana high-school recruited by Coach Hauck and Green like you do : ( . And my real goal is to be a smug, know-it-all, abrasive a_______e like 👍 you, oh omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent Humble Helena Human Hemorrhoid : ) !!!

PS: You should review the proper use of the " ? ," omniscient Triple H : ( .

RB Jones and OL Rollins were destined to be Bobcats. It was in family blood. We should all know what happened with Crews. Those three loses were huge, but place no blame on the former staff. It happened.

Thanks for hopefully helping to dispel the myth that Coach Green 💚 and Coach Hauck didn't recruit Missoula kids, including the years following the Covid pandemic : ) !!!

Coach Hauck was/is not perfect--I hate the 3-3-5, but our football program is in much better shape when he left in 2026 than it was when he arrived in 2018 : ) !!!

Pretty sure the issue has never been them not recruiting. The issue has been the approach. Obviously some kids wanted to be Griz no matter how poor the approach was.

That concept seems to be just too much for billings to grasp.
And my view is that the narrative on the bad or weak approach is not true, or pretty much not true. Green never operated like that, nor did other Griz coaches. I highly doubt that Bobby did either. I know lots of very positive experiences regarding Bobby over the years, including recruits with Cat parents.

I guess then the 8 out of 20 kids in our 2026 class from Montana ( 40 % ), including 2 out of 20 ( 10 % ) from Missoula, recruited themselves since Coach Green 💚 and Hauck were wearing blinders ?

With all due respect, Brint, I strongly disagree. !!!

All the articles and stories and comparisons showing the contribution of Montana kids that Bozeman has/had vs what Montana has/had would disagree - that's probably the point I was poorly trying to make. MSU has recruited far more in-state kids that have lead them to the mountaintop - while the last 3 years Montana has relied heavily on portal kids from all over - which suggests to me the guys they're signing and developing either; aren't being developed properly, aren't ready, or aren't as good as their counterparts 200 miles down the road.

You can call someone out thinking you can getaway with it but have nothing to back it up with. Your just another Egriz paper tiger.
