This is a pretty good video on the highly vaunted 3-3-5 defense as run by Tony White. Coach White learned it the same place Hauck learned it, Rocky Long at SDSU. But it got its start in the 80’s as an innovative way for coach Joe Lee Dunn at New Mexico to deal with the shortcomings of his defensive line recruits who, though athletic, were undersized. If you’re going to comment on the post at least TRY to be objective. Our d lineman are not below average, they are however undersized playing in a horseshit scheme that puts them in a disadvantage before the ball is snapped

They're below average for what they're being asked to do. I think detrick could be a really effective 4-3 end, for instance. And you're probably right, they are not below average. Neither is the o-line. But the line of scrimmage was not anywhere close in either game this year. Not. Even. Close. I agree it's on your staff but that's the main issue.

It looked pretty good against South Dakota State and South Dakota. Remember, South Dakota had one of the best backs in all of the FCS and their line was 300lb monsters. USD went 300, 300, 300, 310, 300 across their line. Cats are 285, 315, 290, 300, 300

How’d it look against MSU? Either time? Or EWU? I lost track of how many 3rd and forevers we gave up over the course of the season.

From what I understood, SDSU's offensive line was the same in the MSU game as it was in the game against us. So what is the difference between SDSU/USD and MSU?

Can a scheme be great against a monster line one week and then not good against a sub monster line the next week or is that execution of the scheme?

Truthfully I think that a team can be absolutely overwhelmed by playing in Wa-Griz. SDSU was not a bad team, neither was USD but they certainly didn’t show they were the teams they were the week before they came here. By the time either team got anything going they were so far behind that it didn’t matter.
How did this defense do on the road against the one team that was even marginally good? Gave up almost 500 yards.
I also don’t look at size as the end all be all. Size without some athletic ability doesn’t translate to much. Gubner had both.

Agree that size without some athletic ability doesn't translate to much. I also think scheme can hide deficiencies. I rewatched the Cat game. I stopped counting how many times Zach Crews beat our more mobile, athletic offensive lineman and Zach is listed as a DE for the Cats and is only 240lb.. It's not just about size or speed.

True, it's about size, speed, strength and scheme, and if we're playing the wrong scheme, it largely negates the other 3, like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

On Jan. 9, 2023, TCU and Georgia played for the FBS national championship Georgia won 65-7, as TCU's 3-3-5 defense got run over as the " Dawgs" rushed 44 times for 254 yards, 5.8 yards per carry--sound familiar ?

Especially with the defensive scheme. Your offense was awesome this year and was good enough to win a title.

Jesus it’s embarrassing that a Cat fan has more clarity about our current situation than most/many myopic Griz fans.
