I’m just throwing data out there. From a statistical perspective the Griz ARE giving up about 50 yards less per game passing and 1 point less per game scoring. Rushing defense is within 5 yards so no statistical difference there. So technically speaking the defense is “better” since they are giving up 1 less point and 50 fewer yards per game passing over the last three when compared to the three games prior, but the difference is minute.Don't make me use the quote again.![]()
I got curious and looked into "empty" yards we've given up this season, and there have been a couple games where it's been 40% or more:In some ways, I can agree. This is the problem with statistics, though. How many of the passing yards against us have come when Hauck is killing the clock with prevent defense and just allowing them to take small gains down the field while the clock ticks? How many points were scored that way on us?
I think we had some difficulties early when Loud went down, but this defense is rounding into form (as many people said they would over time.) I don't think we have been bending quite as much as stats sheets would suggest.
I'm not trying to throw shade at you, but I really would suggest that you have to dig deeper and consider the strategy as well as the stats. We did exactly what we should have up against Sac State and let them move the ball to kill the clock. We have done the same in other games lately, as well as rotating more and more depth while we are up. I'd suggest that the defense is playing FAR better today than they were in the first few games of the season, even if it only shows up slightly in the statistics.I’m just throwing data out there. That is a damn good effort. Thank you for your yeoman's work.I got curious and looked into "empty" yards we've given up this season, and there have been a couple games where it's been 40% or more:
CWU 181/392 yards (46%)
Cal poly 172/336 yards (51%)
Weber 198/327 yards (61%)
Idaho and Sac unsurprisingly were the two worst
Idaho 60/370 yards (16%)
Sac 60/478 yards (13%)
Currently 35% of our total yards have lead to 0 points (1,224/3,511 yards)
If I get more time today, I can look into empty yards per drive, which might be interesting.
...but I also looked at the cats because, you know, curiosity lol...and it's a bit uhhhhh different.
*WARNING I REMOVED OREGON BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU DO IN SITUATIONS LIKE THESE AS IT TELLS US NOTHING ABOUT THEM*
For the season 62% of their FCS yards have been empty (1,350/2,178 yards)
Cal Poly and SDSU were the only games that had empty yards account for fewer than 55%
Cal Poly 51/241 yards (21%)
SDSU 107/297 yards (36%)
If you're curious, and for completeness sake, adding Oregon's numbers (15/507 yards, 3%) brings the numbers down, but still nowhere close to ours.
There's no denying, their defense is good. It's better than ours, and we're gonna have to find ways to score on it.
Thanks for the effort! Can you please clarify what criteria you used to qualify “empty yards”?I got curious and looked into "empty" yards we've given up this season, and there have been a couple games where it's been 40% or more:

Sorry, I thought I put that in there. Thanks for the effort! Can you please clarify what criteria you used to qualify “empty yards”?
Didn’t age well….Bison will beat UND by at least 3 TDs.
It's what we do
Since when does 450 passing yards by a 3rd string redshirt freshman making his first start for the last place team in the conference qualify as good? The Griz D was good…
Maybe so, but the defense ended up winning that game.Since when does 450 passing yards by a 3rd string redshirt freshman making his first start for the last place team in the conference qualify as good?
Huh?the defense is playing FAR better today than they were in the first few games of the season in terms of yardage and points.
