Defense

I noticed they ran way more zone today…..and it worked. 4 interceptions is a great day at the office.

I think you're on to something, a key change in our D in playing zone and going forward after all of the picks today and with Loud out, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot more zone if our secondary doesn't switch to it exclusively !!!

Forgetting the receiving yards Rocker had? Rocker had a great game, that doesn't take away from what Gilman did at all!
Yes, he had 50 and also had GILLMAN had 43. The original comment though was that Stevie was the player of the game, which I don't understand the logic when we had a 50 yard drive that consisted of 3 GILLMAN runs for 50 yards to put a cap on the ball game at 21-9. Now I can't understand why no one can spell GILLMAN because I am pretty sure most would be upset if their name was getting misspelled repeatedly.

Playing Tarleton, BYU, UND and Hawaii will elevate that number pretty easily. They have been high up there and that was on more than one source I saw in the preseason.
These SOS rankings are buoyed by teams playing FBS money games. All the teams in the top 30 or so played one or two FBS teams this season. I'd be very curious to see the rankings with the FBS teams removed. The cats should get credit on their SOS for playing SDSU, but not for having gotten demolished by a very good Oregon team, and the same goes every other FBS body bag game lifting the other SOS rankings up. That said, it's also totally fair that CWU drags our SOS down.

I get what you're saying, but that is what it is. Grambling played Ohio State and they are at 121 because they played two lower division teams. The real punishment in this is, as with Idaho State, if you play three games like that, it doesn't matter how you do against the lower division teams, if you lose the FBS game or games you and win the lower division, you are for all practical purposes 0-3 because you don't have a win that counts for the playoffs anyway. SoS doesn't mean much at all to most of these teams when they lose the games because they aren't reaching the number of wins they need against D-I teams. I feel confident the selection committee will give that Oregon loss the appropriate weight when the time comes.

For what it’s worth, we are CWUs only loss and they’ve blown out every team that they’ve faced in D2 since, including their last game against what was the 6th ranked team in D2. They were ranked 13th heading into that game against the #6 team and won by a couple scores. Pretty sure CWU would probably be right in the middle of the pack in the big sky.

I don't want to open this can of worms again (we went over it plenty in 2023), but the idea that sub-D1 wins "don't count" towards the playoffs is not true, and the playoff committee members have affirmed this to FCS journalists. There is also no 7 (or I guess now 8) D1 win threshold a team must meet in order to make the playoffs.

Thanks for finding that. I thought that would be the case. NDSU will have to prove it. They’ve got UND and SDSU coming up, both of which are good. I think UND is the better of those two teams this year and will really make things hard for NDSU in the alerus center. Either way. Lots of season left, and both teams have some tough outs coming up.
Bison will beat UND by at least 3 TDs.

It's what we do

In 2023 there was still a 7 D1 win thing, but it was something other than a requirement. I don’t recall the words. A D2 win is considered to be a win, but, of course, it is not a D1 win. Some kept saying a D2 win wasn’t considered anything, but that wasn’t true. As you probably know, I am the one who went to the ncaa and asked the question, and proved Herder wrong. I am not aware anything has changed.

I agree, but also note that UM has played some big passing teams.
Bears out in current stats:

92nd in passing yds allowed.
52nd in rushing defense.

...tied for 17 in turnovers forced...good.
...turnover margin tied for 25th...

Stopping the run needs to be a weekly emphasis entering the back half of the season and into the playoffs - critical to advance. Also - need some better decision by KAY to improve TO margin - also critical to advance.

Plenty of time to keep building.

I thought that number was 6 D-I wins, but as you say, that may have done away with. Northern Iowa made the playoffs in 2021 at 6-5 and lost in the first round to Eastern 19-9.

Griz are 80/126 in total defense in the FCS.

Sample sizes are becoming meaningful...

Still much work to do...ndsu is 2/126 total defense at this point BTW.
Jeez. 80/126 is awful. Hopefully we’re turning a corner. Need to string together some defensive performances like the CP game.

More room for improvement for the Griz than the Bison. I like where we are right now with 6+ games to play.
