Junior...

Chip is somewhere in the middle, Reusse can be oppositional but is more of curmudgeon, not familiar with Krammer, Goessling might be the best of this bunch - the most objective. Dane Mizutani is more in the middle.

Now Sid Hartman - complete homer, his son, Chad Hartman, also a homer. Dan Barreiro - more toward opposition but good analysis and reasoning. Roman Augustoviz - more of a homer but still objective, Jim Souhan - all the way in the opposition camp.
I'll take the Common Man, now he knows how analysis all sports.

From the NFL stats:

21 yards per return is well below average in the new format. Taking out his shorter one, he still averaged lower than the average kickoff returner from last season at 24.5.

The Niners last year averaged 28.5 yards per kickoff return, which was 10th in the NFL.

This is what I mean when I say I think he needs to show more on returns.

If he can continue to average well above the Niners 9.2 yards per punt return last year (which was 20th in the NFL), it will help him out a lot.
Good data. This makes sense.

The KO rules have changed this season, and the kicking team is taking advantage of them. Not a valid comparison. Not apples to apples. Need to compare how returners are doing this year under the changed rules.

Edit:

[Teams are using more long-drive bouncing wobblers to gain advantage for the coverage team.]

"So this year, the NFL tweaked the rules once more.

Now, a touchback gives the returning team the ball at the 35-yard-line [instead of the 30]—or just a couple of completions from field-goal range. The upshot is teams suddenly have much more incentive to actually kick the ball into the “landing zone” between the goal-line and 20-yard-line.

The coverage team begins kickoffs lined up on the 40-yard-line, about 5 yards away from their counterparts who are trying to block. When a kick returner fields the ball in the air, he starts moving down field at the same time the coverage unit begins moving in the opposite direction. But when the ball bounces, the kicking team can start moving while the returner tries to reel in an oblong leather object that can bounce in any direction.

As a result, by the time Davis had picked up the ball and started running forward, the Panthers coverage unit had already advanced to around the 30-yard-line.
Which left him precious little room before he was tackled at the 22."

Welp, things just got interesting for Junior. This is big for him. If Cowing can't go, then Junior has the inside shot to be the return guy on the team.

Also Demarcus Robinson has officially been suspended by the league for the 1st 3 games.

Great opportunities for Junior here, but as a Niner fan, our WR room is fucked.

Now the Niners trade for a WR that also just returned a punt for a TD last weekend.

From The Athletic

Moore can play in the slot or outside, and he showed his returning ability last week. Two of the 49ers’ three possible returners, Watkins and Cowing, are injured. The other is Bergen, who is raw as a receiver and whose only ticket to making the roster was as an impact returner, so the trade for Moore is not a good sign for him. — Vic Tafur, 49ers senior writer

The return had no cuts. He just ran upthe sideline. Well-blocked. Moore had zero receptions last season.

The Sky Moore trade is concerning, however. He will make the squad as a WR obviously, but he's also a talented KO and punt returner.

From above: "Skyy Moore has 14 career punt returns in regular season. He lost a fumble on 3 of them"

He can't hang onto the ball. Teams don't want fumblers.

He had zero catches last season. Sure, he'll make team as receiver. He's fast too.

"The Chiefs made Moore a second-round pick in 2022, but he has only 11 starts, 43 receptions for 494 yards and a touchdown and 86 punt return yards and 93 kickoff return yards. He fumbled three punt returns in 2022 and has dropped four passes in his career.

Moore played only six games last season because of a core muscle injury. He saw action on 82 offensive snaps and 18 on special teams, with no catches but two kickoffs for 43 yards.

In last week’s preseason game against the Seahawks, Moore dropped two passes and muffed a kickoff
before returning a punt 88 yards for a touchdown." Yahoo Sports.

"To say that the Skyy Moore experiment has been a colossal failure would be an understatement."

"Sadly, [he] hasn't panned out. Moore has mostly become a punchline amongst Chiefs Kingdom for not living up to expectations."

MSN, talking about his time with Chiefs.

Moving away from the Junior talk, the fact that the Niners had to go get Skyy Moore is depressing as a Niners fan.

Dude has been terrible, and there's a reason the Chiefs wanted him gone.
