Sort of amazing the things that people glom on to....

We did that podcast to explain the procedure of writing about crime in this state. To report on issues like criminal charges and convictions, you have to have the police reports. Most county and city courthouses in Montana, you can get those reports very easily.

Bozeman/Gallatin County is very different. If you do not have a zip code within the county, you have to pay crazy fees to acquire the police reports and they usually don't come through for you until 6-9 months after the crimes have been committed. I first learned this when I was the sports editor of the Bozeman Chronicle and I was trying to report on a DUI charge for a former MSU running back. Even then, I was living in Bozeman and to get the documents in efficient fashion, I had to have our cops and courts reporter get them for me.

Because I did not have the police reports for the MSU DUI situation personally, I did not feel comfortable doing "original" reporting. So instead, we reported it on social media through by retweeting and re posting other outlets' reporting. We also commentated on the DUIs on Nuanez Now about two dozen times. I can find some episodes if you'd like. They are all public and still live.

As I said in the pod of note and as I'll say here, when we analyze and commentate on crimes now in my role as a radio host and podcast commentator, we try our best to talk about how the indiscretions impact the programs on the field. For example, if the OC or DC for the Bobcats are suspended or dismissed, how does that impact the program? We did that during this whole saga.

What it seemed like most of the people that have been critical of me and the Montana media wanted was for the people with the pen (or the camera) to slaughter and opine about the DUIs. To take a moral stand against drinking and driving.

Multiple media members asked Brent Vigen about the situation on multiple occassions. Because of MSU's instituational procedures, Vigen and no other person on campus is allowed to comment. It's their procedure to avoid getting sued, which has certainly happened to MSU before.

I will fully agree that the Missoulian used to competely unfairly destroy the Griz when UM people would get in trouble. I worked there and I hated the way a few of the reporters and an editor treated that situation. It made me sick. It's why I left and moved out of state. It's why Fritz Neighbor lost his job covering the Griz beat - because he stood up for the Griz to the insane ladies fabricating a witch hunt.

I wonder if that's why there was such a strong desire from Griz fans for the Montana media to burn Housewright and Garza at the stake?

Regardless, we only did secondary reporting on these DUIs because of procedure, logistics and costs. If your opinion is that the Bozeman media didn't cover it thoroughly enough or with enough ferocity, I certainly won't argue with you.

If all it takes is saying I'm sorry for letting Sample call some of you a fan base with a loser's mentality, and then agreeing with him, then I'm certainly sorry. Regardless, I'll keep on doing my best to produce Griz content for anyone who wants to follow it.

I know a great many people who are very passionate about the Griz who love what we do at ESPN and Skyline. I would love for that to be all of you, too.

Per the comment about not editorializing, not sure where that came from. I literally host a talk radio show for my main living. All we do is editorialize and opine LMAO

I can accept what you are saying and believe you have only good intentions, especially the part about "I will fully agree that the Missoulian used to competely unfairly destroy the Griz when UM people would get in trouble. I worked there and I hated the way a few of the reporters and an editor treated that situation. It made me sick. It's why I left and moved out of state. It's why Fritz Neighbor lost his job covering the Griz beat - because he stood up for the Griz to the insane ladies fabricating a witch hunt."

However, this part needs to be fleshed out. "Bozeman/Gallatin County is very different. If you do not have a zip code within the county, you have to pay crazy fees to acquire the police reports and they usually don't come through for you until 6-9 months after the crimes have been committed." Why is it so hard to get information from Gallatin County? Is it the ol' boys club? Are they trying to hide the bad things that happen in Bozeman? Maybe do an investigative piece on that topic.

In addition, "What it seemed like most of the people that have been critical of me and the Montana media wanted was for the people with the pen (or the camera) to slaughter and opine about the DUIs. To take a moral stand against drinking and driving." Drinking and driving kills people. If it kills people, then it's the responsibility of the news media and someone who editorializes to take a moral stand. You owe it to the people of Montana to help save lives and, often, sports is a great avenue for social change.

Post got buried on the last page.
Do you have (or does anyone have) a link to the "loser mentality" pod episode? I'm starting to think it never happened.

I only listen to Spotify, so here’s the link to that.

I don’t plan to relisten to it. It’s from August of 2023. I know I was plenty vocal when it came out at the tone and irreverence of it. Some of the assertions we made after the pod were more or less confirmed by colter in previous posts on this thread. One of them being that it was a business decision to not bite that hand that feeds him with the access he has, but he also forgot that he was biting the hand of a good portion of that consumer base that feeds him as well.

I think it’s a tough place he put himself in with his business model of trying to do newsprint type write ups/digital media on skyline, but also have podcasts that are formatted differently from that home website and even each other (nuanez now on espn to big sky breakdown as skyline) , while trying to represent a local radio station and espn as an affiliate and trying to stretch that to all of Montana and beyond. A lot of irons in the fire, so there is no way to really hold onto all of them without getting burned as he does do primary and secondary reporting as well as commentating and editorializing. I could recall incorrectly, but I do believe he made the statement in the pod they don’t editorialize, but stated in previous post on here that it’s all he does. Someone could relisten and confirm.

I do appreciate his coverage of the Big Sky and we are fortunate to have it. I can give a pass or move on from certain things, and know personally there was a lot going on for him that year. I do think last year he grew professionally from the limited intake I had of his products, and I at least saw a change in certain aspects of his shows and coverage when I did listen. As a consumer would I say that single pod affected my consumption of his product? Absolutely! I’m local to Missoula, and have many personal connections to the radio side of his business/boss/family etc.. I don’t listen to that product much at all now.

Thx for the link, Wolf.

I listened to the podcast and don't get the same impression of the podcast as others. If I was living in Montana, I would probably have the same reaction as others. Distance makes the heart grow fonder and gives perspective.

In regards to your last paragraph, and specifically last sentence about "often sports is a great avenue for social change"..

I disagree, I watch sports mostly to get away from bs that happens in every day life, sports is supossed to be escape for the fans and those things just for a moment,

I'm not saying that anybody in the sports/ entertainment field shouldn't be able to voice their opinion, they absolutly should be able to, but there are so many other ways to go about it, that in my veiw would be way more effective

Just like this message board, where people want to keep harping about the duis at Montana state, my problem with those people is, what good does it do to constantly bring it up on this board, if it truly bothers you that much go to appropriate people in your distrct, city, state and tell those people who can/will propose a change.

😂 Cry.
I will never stop teasing you idiots for the disgraceful DUIs. Never. And it’s not because of the moral high ground regarding drinking and driving.
It was all about win at all costs. They tried to cover it up and then gave raises for cripes sakes.
Thus, this is the “appropriate” place to discuss it. If you don’t like that, you can always just leave. 😆

Thanks CDAGRIZ! I must have dozed off during that part. I agree with Colter's take that on the football field you have to stop people and score more points than the other team and you shouldn't blame it on the officials. I don't think that it is a loser mentality but a victim mentality but that may be parsing words. I speak from experience. Minnesota fans have/had classic victim mentality except the past few years of winning have started to change that. Winning changes everything. When the Griz start performing consistently at a high level and win like is expected, then everything will change and the Griz faithful will have the same mentality we had from the mid 90s to late 2000s. I remember the Cats fans of the mid-90s to late 2000s and they didn't just have classic victim mentality, they had classic LOSER mentality.

You uncover your inner self in this post. "And it’s not because of the moral high ground regarding drinking and driving." Shame on you.No matter what the reason for your post the most important reason should be that anyone who drinks and drives needs to be held accountable.Montana is one of the worst states in the nation for this and the penalty is never enough.

Yet you guys still can’t wrap your mind around the fact that your campus was leading the way in sexual assaults at that time. We had one guy convicted who’s where he belongs in Deer Lodge and a witch hunt for one of our players, who cleared his name and came back and beat you guys 2 more times. Real “Pearls” as you say. MSU is the real Rape U as you will, since you want that moniker. You guys are going for all the titles though after these federal investigation you can add racist U to the trophy case.

“These threats are horrific, but the actions of our university administration are worse,” wrote Lin in her complaint to the Office for Civil Rights. “They have failed to acknowledge any of the threats and given us little to no support.
Hughes left MSU in part because he no longer wanted to face white supremacism, he said. He was called the “n” word at MSU, saw Nazi propaganda in trash cans on campus, and heard Bobcats at a football game “screaming racial slurs to members of the other team.”
The subject line from the Feb. 16 email said “killing all the groomers and f—ts” (the email spelled out the slur). The message said sinners needed to turn away from “isis terrorists” and Sharia law to the “white god of Christianity.” A second email Feb. 23 said “true Montanans” would “expel” “colored people” from campus and the state.

So much so that you can't quit trolling them haha., and whats even funnier yet about the whole thing is, is that you still don't get it, and that everyone can see that you're being played like a $2.00 fiddle.

I have an idea, lets somebody on here start a pole to see if you realize how lame you come off.

For said pole I say we go with what's worse, that oh so clever nick name "bub fans" or a troll of "bub fans" 👍

Holy shit. I knew Bozoland was racist but I always heard/thought it was covert racism. This just blows my mind at the utter outright in-your-face racism exhibited at MSU. No wonder my brother, a MSU graduate, decided to send his kid to a different school for engineering.
