Fife

So, I'll admit I was wrong about him. He appears to be the answer and I'm sold. This reminds me kind of like last year stale offense with Vidlak and then McDowell comes in and the whole team just gels together. I now believe Fife is the right guy to lead the Griz. I'm sold.
I believe Griz Addict has earned a good Ole band. Please sign my petition.

Starting a thread with only a player's name is a big-time no go...

Admittedly, I expected the worst.

😀

i thought ay yat looked pretty good - poised, throws a good ball, mostly made good choices, and some great runs. he had a low completion percentage thanks to drops by fontes or necessary 'throw it out bounds' plays. i thought fife looked pretty good, too. considering the frequency of qb injuries and such, it is great the griz have two decent qbs. if i was the coach, and thank gawd i am not, i would start ah yat, with both qb's knowing they will play, but if they muck it up a few times in a row, it'll be off to the bench.

i also think ah yat's demeanor was very similar to his dad's during his rs sophomore year, when the griz went into the championship game undefeated. he respected the players with more experience than him, and lead with his play, which obviously was pretty damn good. he had more zip on his passes than his kid does now, but he was older and more physically mature at that point.

I had a couple of thoughts watching the game. Without any inside knowledge but to me it felt like the coaches had specific goals for each quarterback and called the game differently for each.

1) They knew where the offensive line was and thus started the game with K AY calling a pass heavy offense to help him develop. I think it was close t0 70% passes including starting the game with an unheard of 2 passes in a row. It felt like we could have move the ball better with a little bit better run balance but I think the pass ratio was deliberate. The read progression was the best I have seen from one of our QB's in a long time, maybe a couple of bad decisions throwing into double coverage but the accuracy was such that nothing was close to being picked. K AY kept us in the game while giving the coaches a chance to see and correct mistakes. Hugh upside as has been stated an hopefully we will continue to see more opportunities while the game is still in doubt.

2) The second half felt more like the offence BH wants to run, i.e. let the Offensive Line control the game. I haven't looked at the play numbers but it felt like more 60/40 run/pass balance with more focus on ball control and possession. Lots of 3-4 yd runs on 1st/2nd down and getting to 3rd and short. Fife did a nice job keeping the sticks running and threw some really nice balls. The dart down the seam that hit X in stride in tight coverage was probably the best ball thrown on the night.

I would guess the goal will be to continue to run a pass heavy offense with K AY to accelerate his development and continue to have Fife run the more traditional BH offense over the next few games. As the season progresses I wouldn't be surprised to see K AY become the full time starter but in more of the 60% run offense.

We've got some very good building blocks, for a 2 QB strategy. We also have some very good QB depth off the bench. We were tested very well OL wise with protection and opening things up for the run game, working this whole Offense game up between games, fun to watch...Go Griz!

Very good analysis and makes me think once AY is running a bit more of a traditional offense the o will be even more effective. I like Fife as a spark coming in for a change of pace.

I thought both played great. Would be comfortable with either. AY had longer fields. His stats were squad. 4 dropped passes. 3 that would have been first downs. If you take his sack and fumble recovery off his rushing stats he would have had 6 rushes for 79 yds also. Fife had more of a traditional offense. The pass he had to X on 4 and 1 was clutch. His passes were 5-10 yarders. He had 3 rushes for 15 yards. Eli had great drives while he was in. Which helped Fifes passes. Will be great to see both develop more. We will see both Qbs a lot more.

I like your points. One thing I also always remind myself is that we know we run an RPO heavy offense. Last year there was some criticism about whether there was too much running or passing being called, and the truth was that Clif was making the RPO call at the start of the play. We want that, and we want guys who can run that system. If Ah Yat was feeling comfortable enough to be looking to pass out of the RPO, I think that is a great sign that he wasn't intimidated by the moment at all.

Ah Yat is the guy that should be playing and it's not worth debating.

There is nothing any QB on the roster does better than KAY plus he has the intangibles you don't see from any QB we have had since Jordan Johnson
Agree, he plays a lot like JJ...his time his coming, no worries!

I think Ah Yat managed the offense better, having rewatched the game. He had well rounded game, was better QB at running the read option, which isn't a gimmic play in this offense.
I wasn't thrilled about a couple of those long side check down plays, which always make me nervous, but that's Pease's call.

The fumble, which I had good view of wasn't great, but it happens. Gasp at the play being a potential disaster, but the reason the game was tight was a botched return and no one is calling for a benching there.

No one is benching Fife for a stalled drive that should have salted the game away. The Griz needed a long pass completion, not a QB run.

The Griz played a lot of their roster from the start. I think it's hard to sift through that and make decisions about starters at QB.

It also looked to me like Montana could have mashed their way through the game, given the depth of its O-line and fresh running backs that weren't used as much as they could have been. Would like to see more of every RB, regardless of who starts.
No doubt, Fife was order to run though...that is not on him. Good points though...

He fumbled and barely recovered it back. The MSU player jumped on the ball first, so that was a miracle.
but he made the effort and got it back. i don't know why everybody seems hung up on this mistake. dude's making his first start, his first truly important playing time. geez.

Good analysis. I wish they would have flipped the order of QB’s and play calling. I think developing Ah Yat is the plan and I commend the coaches for their approach. A more aggressive philosophy than I cared for, but it worked. As usual, they know what they are doing. I think Fife earned the start tonight. We shall see and I thought Ah Yat played a very solid game, except for the one scramble and spin move. He needs to change that. It has gotten him in trouble multiple times. Speed of the game is too fast for that move.
