But why wasn’t he getting time. Obviously either was replaced or Arizona coaches weren’t happy with his performance… you don’t just randomly bench a guy. FCS and FBS are pretty unrelated and I never look into guys in FBS and their scholarships.

I looked into the 22 and 23 depth chart and in 22 he was 5th and 23 he wasn’t on top 4 also in 21 he was 3rd. I haven’t watched any film but this suggests his performance wasn’t great. With that said he has the total ability to thrive in the FCS and by no means am I saying that he is bad… Julius Davis was the 5th string for Wisconsin (although Wisconsin rbs are different than Arizona rbs) and he has been phenomenal.

Why wasn’t Davis gettting time at Wisconsin?

Rocker was 4th and 5th what? What position? Did AZ have 1 or 2 back offense? Let’s see the links. Schools don’t generally release 5-deep depth charts. AZ was sending rb’s to NFL in recent years.

Anyone who doesn’t know FBS can’t split scholarships doesn’t know much about football.

Davis was behind a bunch of solid rbs, he was also a sophomore. Rocker was listed 5th on the depth chart for rbs.

Wisconsin had Melvin Gordon and Jonathan Taylor is very recent.

Both of those guys were gone before Davis was playing at all.

I honestly don't get what you're arguing here. Rocker hasn't played a down for us yet, so how can you say he's not as good or better than anyone?

"Our guy that didn't play at Wisconsin is better than your guy who didn't play at Arizona" like come on lmao

Davis got some snaps I just think it’s weird how Rocker went way down on the depth chart. He has full ability to be very successful

"Still 17 at the time, Rocker wasn’t sure how he’d fare in his first spring camp. He said he exceeded his own expectations. His coaches – none of whom recruited him – had to recalibrate theirs.

“Stevie’s an amazing talent,” running backs coach Scottie Graham said. “Big, strong, fast. He’s gonna keep growing. You won’t be able to keep a guy like that off the field. You just won’t be able to.”

Rocker knows he still has room to improve. Pass protection remains a work in progress. He’s gotten bigger, recently checking in at 202 pounds, up from about 190 in spring. He said he knows all the plays in Fisch’s dense playbook.

“At this point I feel like I’m good,” Rocker said. “I honestly just need to get on the field and get that in-game experience.”

I think he total potential, I haven’t seem him on film but with that size he can be great. Will be very interesting to see how gris transfers pan out this year. If they kick butt the gris will be phenomenal and if they are below average the gris could face some adversity, probably still seeded in playoffs.

Because the Griz have 2 of the best backs in the conference, and I would take either over Davis anyday of the week. Both are proven and know the offense. Rocker just got to town for spring ball. He's apparently very talented. I expect him to be one of what will be a 3-headed monster as the season goes on. We shall see.
 
I did some looking at the Cats, including Herder's pre-season review. I can see that the Cats have some players and seem to have most of the positions covered, even though I have never heard of many of those guys. Cats don't seem to have done much in the Portal. I wonder if the Cats will lack depth, and be hurt big by any key injuries. I still think not having Chambers will be the biggest negative for the Cats. Not only a very good player and very good runner, but someone who could run the offense if Mellott was injured. I can't imagine Mellott won't get injured some, if the Cat O scheme is the same. Even if the new backup is good, he's not going to be able to run the strength of the Cat O as well as Mellott and Chambers. That will hurt, if it occurs. I don't see how the Cat O will be able to be as good this season (due to lacking Chambers) and don't see how the D will be any better than last season (only an okay D last season). I can't evaluate the new coordinators. Don't know enough.

Very fair. As far as transfer portal stuff, Vigen seems to rather develop talent and replace portal/significant grads through portal. Everyone who left got replaced by portal. Interesting enough the FBS guys we brought in our likely going to be below the new starters. I do not expect a depth problem at all, in fact this might be one of the deeper overall cat teams as of late. I really think Chamber’s was overrated as he threw many awful balls and made some bad decisions. I hope that the scheme will have Tommy running less as we have incredible running backs and should use them. We got some serious offensive talent and the offense should have no drop off. Defense should be much better than last year and it is very senior driven with good depth. Only time will tell…

We will see. UCD has the best back in the conference and then it’s between Davis, Humphrey, Gilman, possibly Rocker? (if he lives up to egriz predictions) Gilman averaged less than Davis (per game) last year and got significantly more touches (nearly double) and Ostmo got double the touches that White/Humphrey got and still averaged the same per game. Obviously the bobcats have some advantages with a better rushing o-line and a toucher scheme to stop the run but I thought those stats were interesting.

Again, I would take Gilman and Ostmo over Davis. Is Davis slow? Why doesn't he have longer runs?

Cats have had a better running game, and very good scheme for and runners from, QB. Of course, Cat backs can put up some numbers, especially per carry. D's are keying on the QB runs.

The 3 top Cat backs caught 13 passes. That's pathetic. Gillman and Ostmo caught 43. Harris had more than any Cat back. Gilman and Ostmo combined for almost 2,000 yards of running and receiving. Davis and White combined for about 1400. You seem to think that running backs only run. They do much more, including receiving and blocking.

I don't think the Griz running backs lost a fumble last season (or not many). How about the Cat running backs? Any fumbles?

Feel free to doublecheck the total yards I just eyeballed.
 
More info on Rocker

11.7 100 m jr year (1 second slower than Gilman)
Ran 110 m hurdles and did long jump

Was injured junior and senior year of hs and had offers from Cal, BYU, Arizona, Nevada.

Seems fast but not super fast, with his size and what I saw he looks hard to tackle. From his stats he played 11 games but only got 31 carries for around 150 yards with what looked like a long of 60-70 yards. I would imagine Gilman gets more touches but if Rocker proves himself he could get more. I think he is better than Ostmo but lacks experience on him.

Davis was running 11.7 in 2018 which is a long time ago so obviously he could be faster or slower but I wouldn’t say he is slow. Davis is the running back that mows guys over whereas White and Humphrey are more shifty. Yes rb passing wasn’t going on much but I know from watching every game this year that White got used the most in rb passing and has tons of potential in that area. Also important to note the 8 passes to Humphrey and White totaled for 4 tds. Davis will be hurt till October (didn’t play against NDSU) and I think Humphrey will start with White and Adam Jones will get more touches with some Elijah Elliot action. Also when comparing stats it is important to note the gris played 3 more games which creates differences but also the cats had Davis getting most touches and White and Humphrey splitting the rest whereas Ostmo and Gilman got a ton.

I think Gilman is good but he and Ostmo got smoked in playoffs against good defenses. I think their performance will be impacted by the o-line and to some degree scheme. If Humphrey or White got the touches Ifanse got in his day I think they both could’ve beat the record he set and both are very similar to him. Overall both teams should be very successful in the run game while the cats will put up better numbers and averages due to scheme and o-line… with that said the gris will pass it better with their 3 stud wr and a great te, it will be interesting to see the run/pass balance.
