I love the millennial v. baby boomer argument. People lump individuals into these stereotypes based on age or occupation and it's ridiculous.

I consider myself a millennial.

I don't favor "communism" but I am very much in favor of more socialized systems such as secondary education or healthcare. This thought process is EXTREMELY common in my age group. The argument of "you just want things for free!" is bullshit. The same person who says that goes and picks up their Social Security check every month. Also socialized education has proven to be much more successful in other countries in many aspects including quality of education.

and no I am not just begging for hand outs. I do quite well for myself financially.

You missed one important point there. Social security isn't free (nor is medicare) its paid for (and then some) by the folks drawing it. The average worker pays $722,000 into Social Security and Medicare and can be expected to take out $966,000 in benefits. Had they put the same amount into regular investments their yield would be roughly double. The assets in the Social Security trust fund are invested in Treasury bonds, notes and bills. while safe have pretty low yield. Interestingly 1.5 TRILLION of that trust fund is a contingent liability having been used as "student loans" to pay for millinnials college education (most who never graduated and 12% who default...........

Yah, except people don't pay for their own SS. They are paying for the older generations SS. So those of us paying into it now will likely not see any part of it.

Sidetracked posters here seem to have missed the concluding statement of the article:

"It’s not a particular generation of people that’s killing college football attendance. It’s technology, and there’s no going back."

Then, of course, there is the Bob Costas analysis of the general future of football:

http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2017/11/09/bob-costas-warns-future-football-is-bleak-because-sport-destroys-peoples-brains.html

Exactly. To try to get this topic back on track, I think this is only going to make an attendance problem worse. Schools like Montana rely on out of town fans to come to games. With the increase in technology and ways to view the game, many fans may choose to save the money and only come to town for a game or two vs an entire season.

As previously mentioned, millennials tend to spend their money on experiences. Being 30, I put myself squarely in that category. I go to all the home Griz games for the experience, which is aided by the fact I live in Missoula.

Dunno what will happen after 2037, but what you say isn't true. The trust fund was established 1937, and benefit payments were scheduled to begin in 1942 when it had a positive cash flow. Of course WWII caused a few problems but not as many as on would think as only 60% were covered anyway even though initially the payroll tax covered all. The Trust fund (on average) has had slightly positive cash flow since (had it been left alone even more positive cash flow. It took a hit in 2008 and since not becqwuase of payouts but the fact there has been virtually no return on Treasury bonds, notes and bills since and projections are based on the last 10 years. We are paying for ourselves.

I’ve tried to stay out of where this thread has gone. However, I did find one point interesting:

… if there is something distinct about Millennials in all this, it’s that we came up not having to pay much for entertainment products, if we paid anything at all. We pirated our first JAY-Z albums. There is no admission charge on Reddit.
Apparently the country has raised a generation of thieves … and they’ve infected lots of other generations. Somehow, it’s okay to steal creative works like music, illustrations, text, etc. … generally “content.” So one of the “industries” that will get killed will be that of “content” sources. Although there will be no shortage of crap produced by amateurs, quality material will be hard to come by, eventually. With all this great new technology, we need to find a way that good writers, musicians, illustrators, etc. can earn a decent living.

That is surely not true right now for most creative workers. We socked away enough when we had “day jobs” to live comfortably now, so I do not need to support myself with my writing. Trouble is, I do not know (personally) any writers who make enough to live comfortably on just that. Some years back, I knew a young lady who was a very fine songwriter. She tried to make it with a band, but found she had no “stage presence,” so that didn’t work out. Before we lost touch with her, she had pretty much given up. She only tossed off a few tunes as a hobby because she could not make a living as just a songwriter.

This started out as a legit discussion of one (possible) reason for declining football attendance. But is has gone way off track … shouldn’t it be taken elsewhere?

Welcome to life Brad. Took me twenty years to pay mine off. No we didn't have as high of costs but then we didn't make as much either. Where you live and what you choose to do is up to the individual. The high paying jobs have always been in the cities. I know I will never fully retire. So, nothing new or unusual. Choice I made about quality of life I wanted over material accumulation.

lol.. my life's mostly fine, and I do pretty well for someone my age, so I'm not complaining too much. I have a lot of fun in my life, more than most. ;) I don't accumulate a lot of material possessions due to the fun having in my life. I just hate the constant narratives that "oh, this isn't right, must be a millennial problem." Uhh, no, there are several things in play here. Generally, most of us pull ourselves up by the boot straps and don't eat avocado toast. It's a lazy blame game narrative.

Same thing my generation heard when we were your age. Truth to the more things change, the more they stay the same. Good thing is I don't think any of us had that rough of life compared to previous generations. We have all been pretty pampered.

It’s known as growing up … societies do that just as individuals do. The old pseudo-macho culture is dying, and good riddance to it. It’s not only football and boxing, hunting and fishing is dying out as more people realize that killing other species for fun is for morons who should have an open season declared on them; more people are becoming vegetarian or semi-vegetarian; where I live, several bars have closed as people find better things to do, the molestors are being outed, the bigots are being exposed … all part of a most salubrious trajectory in the world. At the same time, those advocates of the dying culture are in the midst of one of those last gasp rebellions which always characterize times of great progress. And, you goddamn right people are more vociferous about their “entitlements.” They believe that a person should be able to have a reasonably decent life without working at three jobs and being saddled with debt throughout their entire lives. The only entitlement they demand is for what they have earned. They’ve seen that under increasingly deregulated and lower taxed capitalism that they get less every year while working more hours and that all the wealth soon becomes concentrated in the hands of a few vultures. It was always a fraudulent system organized by the wealthy to supercharge their greed. The pathetic kool ade we’ve been fed by the “free enterprise” stink tanks is no longer enough to fool any but the stupid which is why we are seeing society evolve into a radically divided condition with the slow learners on the one hand and people capable of learning on the other. After their little tantrum has been thrown and they sink into their normal, semi-comatose state, these fools will finally shut the hell up and we will find ourselves living on a level much higher than the one we are now in … IF the backward cretins don’t destoy us first with their ignorance and science denying attitudes.

Jesus, Bruno, I got halfway through this and had to go shoot myself.

Excellent! If it did nothing but bring that about, it served a noble purpose. Did you leave a grieving widow ... or, more likely, a celebrating one?

..67% prefer more socialism vs captalism..let's face it they like their entitlements and want other people to pick up their bills..so why be surprised!

Don't you mean, "millennials are busy picking up the tab for baby boomers who have set this country back so far in debt they'll never get out"?

...great point but enough blame to go around but it is the dirty politicians we voted for..plenty to discuss but enough sad!

Some of us (like the millennials) have been voting for these shit bags for a lot less time. Blaming millennials for problems nowadays is naive and ignorant at best. We're working our asses off but we don't accumulate wealth due to a number of things.
Accumation of wealth comes from the ability to recognize where one would like to be 30 years + down the road, but instead millenials are concerned about what can be achieved/experienced right now. Building long term wealth is a lost discipline and instant gratification has taken over. Many people prefer to get their little bit of something now over getting significantly more down the road. Not judging either way, just pointing out my perception.

I'd respond, but I'm dead.

I think that may have happened at a much earlier date than you imagine. I hope it had nothing to do with leaving your helmet under the bench several times.

Yeah, that's why they spend years getting an education only to find there are no worthwhile jobs even after they've got it ... then take two jobs and get the wife one, as well. And, most wealth in this society now goes to people who have rich daddies, connections or engage in useless money manipulation.

It was the millenials not the boomers who put bo in the white house and gave money away to the tune of 10 tillion, a 1 trillion $ shovel ready stimulas that was kickbacks, not one project was completed. 500 billion disappeared from DOE? or and a trillion to Iran, none of which had anything to do with boomers. CORRUPTION and DNC and a RNC with NO spine.

Anecdotally, for UM anyway, it's not the youngsters who complain the most about season tix going up $22, driving for hours over passes, paying outlandish hotel fees of $189/night, having to pay $14.95 for a damned steak dinner with unlimited salad bar and two free sides, and threatening to pull all support unless and until their choice for HC is hired.

Because the youngsters don't care?

That may be. But they certainly don't bitch as much. :thumb:

NOT ONE DNCer voted for the tax cut package, how can you not vote FOR a tax cut for middle income Americans. If our country can have 3-5% GDP you'll see how boomers saved, and you will too. More money in your pocket and less in the goverment's hands to waste. Put every DNC and RINO that is not pro American and pro growth out of office.
