My friends and I were playing football in the back of one of my friends yard. He sent me on a go route, I running (just faster than the Wisconsin ice sheet), managed to hit a fence post (one of those green ones you hammer in) full gait. Bent it in half, and managed to drop the football but I did get a knee that swelled up the size of a football in return. So I had that going for me which was nice.

I just drank a soda, pretended the massive swelling around my knee or the noticeable crease on my patella was no big deal, and went upon my day. If there was a NOT top 10 back then, that would have most undoubtedly been the top play of the week.

The number of things we did as kids, in the specter of pretending to be athletic greats, that nearly got us killed could fill several tomes. I've got literal novels from my exploits playing basketball in my driveway.

And yes, I would be in traction for months if I attempted to execute the moves that I attempted in my youth. I tear a hamstring just bending down to get a piece of paper off the floor.

Anyway, here it is. Zac had an offer. Was told it was good but would be silent and delayed. Other schools continued to recruit him even after the Venmo. Zac stuck with UM. Signing day happened. The Kaimen article appeared months later. A small group approached the coach and said him or them. The coaches asked if they would meet him or mentor him. They declined. Offer gone. Other schools don't have scholarships right now.

I don't find fault with the players or coaches. It is what it is. Zac is a good kid (albeit a trash talker) who I don't find at all racist and I'm making this claim from a larger body of work - not just an out-of-context Venmo. Can we let it go now and let everyone get on with their lives? Or do you need more blood?

When you are not the subject of said racism you have no footing about what is or is not racist. What he posted on Venmo would absolutely not have been posted by someone who is "not racist." The post stands alone and speaks for itself. Crews could have explained the context of the post if, as you say, it really was taken out of context but he didn't. He only posted an apology because he was called out and he knew that the post was defamatory at the least. All your post above tells me is that you think that some threshold of racism is acceptable, at least if it is not outwardly blatant and therein lies the problem in our society for addressing this issue.

As to whether he should have been allowed to join the team, I have no opinion on that but we are where we are and, as you say, it is what it is.

Buddy, as a sixth-grader, I performed Dream Shakes in the driveway by myself for Sonics scouts who would drive by any minute. I think one drove by once, but I missed the easy bank shot and my chance. Yeah, it could’ve been Mrs. Underwood’s son driving from Washington to visit her, but it was a Sonics scout damnit. I have no doubt missing that shot is the sole reason I didn’t play center in the NBA.

They combine GPA and ACT. So if he has a 30+ ACT, he would likely qualify for the MUS scholarship.
