Young Talent & Breakout Star

Probably like you, I would prefer "Good team, finds way to win, never gives up, conference champs, playoff bound". Who cares how they do it, and who does it.

With close to 40 players coming off their red-shirt.....this is not a common year. We need some of these guys to be real players and contribute.

40 players redshirted? That seems like an impossibly high number.

It's nowhere near 40...

Shoot.....my bad guys! Had a bit too much nog haha

I was thinking about last year's recruiting class and how we were around 40 new faces total. In my state I didn't consider transfers haha

Still....25 is a big number of freshmen!

One thing a redshirt year does is gIves a real sense of a recruit....beyond a hudl video. As in which are really players, who work hard and show up for weightlifting, how they compare to others on the actual field of play etc. Not all are going to be players, let alone impact players like some on here think based on their recruit info, stars etc. Unfortunately a couple will not meet egriz expectations that's for sure......I am not going to name names you will find out on your own.

It's a good point. Every year there are players that mature and break out, and unfortunately some come in with hype then don't make it. How many saw JLM be able to do this before last spring?

Anyways the recruiting thread is still fun for the offseason.

Was just cruising through the roster taking a second look at all the young talemt we have, on both sides of the football. It got me thinking.....who will see significant time and be the next big Griz break out star (a la JLM or Buss style):

Defense:

Esai Longoria 6'3 314lbs - DT
Andrew Harris 6'2 225 lbs - DE
Devin Maua 6'3 240 lbs - DE
Randy Rodriguez 6'3 244 lbs - DT
Cole Rosling 6'4 225 lbs - DL
Trace Bradshaw 6'3 254 lbs - DL
Cy Sirmon 6'3 236 lbs - LB
Jace Lewis 6'1 213 lbs - LB
Trace Letexier 6'2 240 lbs - LB
Dante Olson 6'3 223 lbs - LB
Gavin Crow 6'1 191 - S
Lewis Cowans 6'1 187 lbs - CB
Josh Egbo 6'2 185 lbs - DB
Josh Sandry 6'1 200 lbs - S

Offense:

Ben Hardy 6'6 225 lbs - WR
Dareon Nash 6'2 170 lbs - WR
Jed Nagler 6'4 208 lbs - WR
Brennan Corbin 6'5 222 lbs - WR
Samori Toure 6'3 172 lbs - WR
Conlan Beaver 6'5 276 lbs - OL
Dallas Hart 6'5 312 lbs - OL
Brandon Scott 6'7 320 lbs - OL
Thayne Jackson 6'5 312 lbs - OL
Ashton Torres 6'4 315 lbs - OL
Cody Meyer 6'3c285 lbs - OL
Dylan Eickmeyer - 6'4 300 lbs - OL
Samuel Akem 6'4 195 lbs - WR
Lamarriel Taylor 6'2 195 - WR
Kobey Eaton 6'3 185 lbs - WR
Gresch Jensen 6'2 215 lbs - QB

Transfers:

Chris Favoroso 6'3 255 lbs - DE
Caleb Hill 6'4 205 lbs - QB
Dylan Gilfoy 6'5 255 lbs - DE

I know the staff is high on the up and coming receivers. Akem looks like a man amongst boys and could be the next big deal here. Same could be said about Corbin. Toure's highlight reel is insane and I know they are excited about Nash, too. Eaton looked unstoppable in the spring and I know they like Taylor, too. Crazy deep at WR.

Randy Rodriguez was the scout MVP for defense much like Dante Olson the year prior. Dante was awesome on special teams this past year, as was Cy Sirmon. I can see Cy and Dante being our next LB stars but we are so deep there as well it may take another year. Sirmons tape is also incredible and he's just biding his time. Longoria may be too big and athletic to keep off the field.

Will Gresch get a shot at QB? My gut tells me it will be Hill or Phillips, but I still think Gresch will be a star. The young talent and size on the OL looks incredible. Will be awesome seeing what these kids can do.

Hard to pick one, but I think Sandry will be the next Griz great. He looked the part until Yamen got the playing time over him (which I still disagree with). Looks like lots to be excited about with all the up and comers. Guessing lots will get a shot at special teams roles and then will be the guys to put the Griz back on the map soon.

Lots of stars listed above. One to look for, never mentioned, is Ben Hardy.

Ben is one impressive lookin' dude. Stand by this fella, and you'll see what I mean. He is Big and muscular. He made another red-shirting offensive lineman look small. If this dude can run and catch versus linebackers and safeties... LOOKOUT :!: A serious weapon, possibly. Or if they play him at DE, either way I am intrigued by his substantial potential.

IG, your summary of Ben Hardy is a reflection for the majority of the Stitt recruits. Most of them pass every eye test.

After a while, people might suspect you don't know. No, there weren't 40 freshmen. Randomly selecting, in 2013 UM had 19 freshmen, in 2011 26 freshmen, and in 2010 21 freshmen, 2009 21 freshmen, and in 2008, 35 freshmen.

I think Phillips is the starter heading into spring ball because he has the best grasp on the offense and has some snaps. He has a big arm and some mobility. Granted he didn't look all world when he got in for mop up duty and spring ball which is why people might be down on him. However, he was also running for his life with the back-up OL in.

Like I said before it will be him or Hill, not Jensen like so many think (those who are going based on his recruiting info and not on his performances in 3+ months of practice with the team.....thus the need to bring in another transfer (Hill)

Sorry, not that there is no love for Reese...more that I didn't think of him as young talent (he will be a senior I believe). He could most definitely be our latest break out star. In fact I hope he is.

Probably like you, I would prefer "Good team, finds way to win, never gives up, conference champs, playoff bound". Who cares how they do it, and who does it.

One of the best posts I have read in a long time. Every year it seems a player is tabbed as one that will have a huge season, if they don't they get chewed up on e-griz. Give me a bunch of hardworkers and a championship TEAM i don't care if any make ALL BSC team.

I'm picking a real "sleeper" in conlan beaver......I remember his high school tape, he was intense.....it may be that he jumps over some obvious people that have more press coming in.....just a hunch....

Hammer: I know for a fact Stitt is very high on Willy Pflug.
Oh I believe it. He compared Pflug to his QB he had at CSM last year and that guy threw for over 4k yards and a ton of TDs. I'm betting we will still see one more QB recruited though, we want competition to be HOT at that position for years to come.
Pflug got a lot of admiration, until he didn't. Jensen seems to have fallen in the esteem of egriz to behind Phillips and Hill. Phillips? One year, and then QB search starts over again? Is that a strategy?

Looking around the BSC, NAU replaced an injured QB with a top notch back-up. EWU always seems to find a first class QB no matter what, or coaches one up. MSU walloped us with a teenager, during a complete half season collapse behind our NFL-caliber QB.

What seems to be the problem here? The position that perhaps needs the young talent and breakout star the most seems to be, from the comments, instead a default to the senior on the team, without much enthusiasm or confidence. If competition for that position is "HOT," how is that so? If it "should be" hot, why isn't it?
