I don't think so...... Having JJ under center a few times a game opens up the possibility of making that 3rd and 1 on the oppents 7 yrd line a 1st down, rather than a typical missed field goal, like we've seen so many times in the last three years

You know, people have always made a big deal out of this since Pflu came in, but honestly the facts make it not so clear cut.

Here's the 3rd down completion percentage since 2007:

2007: 85/184 46%
2008: 97/217 45%
2009: 100/218 46%
2010: 60/162 37%
2011: 92/215 43%
2012: 74/182 41%

Clearly a hit in 2010 and 2012, but 2011 was only slightly less than 2008 and 2009 when we went to the chipper. It gets even more interesting when you look at redzone scoring and redzone touchdowns.

2007: 40/51 78% with 30 TDs 59%
2008: 51/69 74% with 43 TDs 62%
2009: 60/72 83% with 49 TDs 68%
2010: 33/41 80% with 22 TDs 54%
2011: 49/56 88% with 36 TDs 64%
2012: 39/50 78% with 29 TDs 58%

Apart from the monster 2009 season, Pflu's 2011 offense when it was running wild performed better in the red zone than every other year, even 2007, when we had that monster O-line and Lex Hilliard pushing people back, and 2008 with Chase Reynolds and another monster O-line moving forward.

Edit: In the last 6 games of 2011 when JJ and the O was on fire, we were 46% on third downs (including an amazing 10/15 in the SHSU game, which was mostly JJ getting it done with his arm), and 26/27 96% in redzone scoring with 18 TDs 67%, which is right up there with the averages of the 2009 team.

I-form, twin TEs, and a pro-style offense doesn't guarantee that we'll be any better getting TDs and first downs in short yardage situations at all.

I still say put JJ out in space where he'll do the most damage. It worked before, and it can work again.

FYI that photo isn't new, that was from a few years ago when the Griz shifted from the brighter silver helmets to the darker grey ones they have now. I think they made the switch 2 years ago now, spring camp 2011.

I don't have the resources or time to look all that data up, but I'm not sure why it would matter.

Ultimately, inside the 25 you want to score, and picking up 3rd and 4th downs doesn't do any team from any time period any good if they don't score, and that's what I was showing with my data.

Pflu's 2011 team averaged more TDs in the redzone per trip than several of Bobby's best teams, and he did it without a power run game at all.

Unfortunately, if you want to go back longer, they only have records for red zone efficiency from 2006, and those numbers were

2006 46/60 77% with 30 TDs 50%

So, as far as scoring TDs in the redzone, which I assume is ultimately what you want your team to do once you get there, here's each available year's rank.

#1 2009 with 68% of red zone trips ending in a TD
#2 2011 with 64% of red zone trips ending in a TD
#3 2008 with 62% of red zone trips ending in a TD
#4 2007 with 59% of red zone trips ending in a TD
#5 2012 with 58 of red zone trips ending in a TD
#6 2010 with 54% of red zone trips ending in a TD
#7 2006 with 50% of red zone trips ending in a TD

So, again, the Oregon spread that the "Ram it Down Their Throat!" posters always hated because it didn't get it done in short yardage situations actually got it done better than all but one of Bobby's "Ram it Down Their Throat!" teams.

Thanks for clearing that up BW. I think I found it in a google search when I was attempting to find anything on the new unis & look for 2013. Sometimes that stuff gets leaked online...by accident of course! .

Though I don't really understand the recruiting effort (if that is what it is) for these transfers.
We have a ton of good running backs, so we pick up another.
We have a ton of solid (though largely inexperienced) wide receivers, so we pick up another.
Anyone watching last year's Griz knows we need some experienced help in the secondary.
If we're seeking a drop down from UW or UCLA I'm waiting to see one who can cover a receiver.

I was told these drop down guys pretty much pick where they want to go. It aint the movies with 8 guys standing in the parking lot for guys like this. We had a shot at the UCLA kid but they decided to pass & now he's at EWU. He's one defensive player at the safety position.

Under normal circumstances, I would have loved to see the UCLA kid in maroon and silver, but unfortunately our current circumstances are anything but normal. The fact of the matter is that we just aren't going to touch recruits with any sort of questionable past for a bit.

Interesting addition for the Griz. I know of this kid as I'm from Graham and friends of mine went to school with him. He's fast but had some trouble catching balls at times. The thing I'd worry most about would be his "my sh!t don't stink" attitude, but maybe he's lost that. I also know he was orginally going to attend Bethel high school in Graham, but later changed his mind to attend GK High for a better opportunity to be the star standout. Guess only time will tell what happens now. Good luck!

Coach MD said they are happy to have landed Jones, not only because of his explosion and FBS experience but also because Mitch Saylor had surgery and they are not sure when he will return. So Jones is a nice addition :!:

The Griz sorely needed a true fullback (battering ram) for their two back sets, so Jamal Wilson is another great addition.
