this has to have truth to it as we do not have extra scholarships to give out,,,couple griz are out with these guys coming on board....that is just the way life is...the better athlete wins out...

Exactly. Everybody hated Haucks offenses but the winning record speaks for itself. I doubt the Griz will ever win as many games in a 7 year stretch again.

It is worth noting that Jamal is a FB from a pro-style offense at Boise State and Jamaal is a WR from a pro-style offense at UW. Fullback to tight end? Fullback to slot receiver? Slot receiver to h back, or slot to opposite outside? These transfers should know those plays, which the current Griz are still learning.

But seriously, limiting JJ by forcing him under center to run power I limits this offense.

Keep him out in the open, and he'll dominate.

I don't think so...... Having JJ under center a few times a game opens up the possibility of making that 3rd and 1 on the oppents 7 yrd line a 1st down, rather than a typical missed field goal, like we've seen so many times in the last three years

You know, people have always made a big deal out of this since Pflu came in, but honestly the facts make it not so clear cut.

Here's the 3rd down completion percentage since 2007:

2007: 85/184 46%
2008: 97/217 45%
2009: 100/218 46%
2010: 60/162 37%
2011: 92/215 43%
2012: 74/182 41%

Clearly a hit in 2010 and 2012, but 2011 was only slightly less than 2008 and 2009 when we went to the chipper. It gets even more interesting when you look at redzone scoring and redzone touchdowns.

2007: 40/51 78% with 30 TDs 59%
2008: 51/69 74% with 43 TDs 62%
2009: 60/72 83% with 49 TDs 68%
2010: 33/41 80% with 22 TDs 54%
2011: 49/56 88% with 36 TDs 64%
2012: 39/50 78% with 29 TDs 58%

Apart from the monster 2009 season, Pflu's 2011 offense when it was running wild performed better in the red zone than every other year, even 2007, when we had that monster O-line and Lex Hilliard pushing people back, and 2008 with Chase Reynolds and another monster O-line moving forward.

Edit: In the last 6 games of 2011 when JJ and the O was on fire, we were 46% on third downs (including an amazing 10/15 in the SHSU game, which was mostly JJ getting it done with his arm), and 26/27 96% in redzone scoring with 18 TDs 67%, which is right up there with the averages of the 2009 team.

I-form, twin TEs, and a pro-style offense doesn't guarantee that we'll be any better getting TDs and first downs in short yardage situations at all.

I still say put JJ out in space where he'll do the most damage. It worked before, and it can work again.

That has a lot to do with the opposition upping their games as it does with Griz struggles...although that certainly played a part.

I agree.. Our struggles make it look like the opposition has up'd their game. If we can get back to controlling the time of possession we can get back to that level, so when the fourth quarter rolls around we end up wearing down the other team. JMO

This is a great get for us. Gives us another top flight WR to go with Henderson, completely reduces the opportunity to roll coverage or double him. BTW he was also a DB in high school. So theres the potential for him to contribute in the secondary as well. I beleive he will play WR for the griz & will be with us for the next 3yrs potentially!

Looks like he only played in ONE game last year & that was vs Portland State. Not sure where the comment about team captain in the UofA game came from.

I thought the new uni announcement was supposed to be last month?

You're asking for trouble. He is not physically durable enough to withstand that load every short yardage situation. The offense needs some diversity and occasional power football adds diversity and adds to what defenses must prepare for. And gives the smallish QB a break and shares the load with some broader shoulders.

Jones was a 2010 griz recruit before right? I like the potential of this if he can get up to speed quickly. There are quite a few guys here this summer for volunteer workouts. Hope he is one of them. This new diverse offense will be alot to prepare for weekly. It appears to me that defenses are starting to adjust to pure spread teams.

As a junior, Jones was productive. He caught 40 passes for about 600 yards and 13 touchdowns. Kurle often used him as an extension of the running game, getting him the ball on reverses and quick screen passes. He said he could almost bank on those plays picking up 8-10 yards.
