Will's injury

Using the combined post above by Buttegrizzle & votb as a sound starting point, my first observation is that egriz hoops has been very active, informative and entertaining this year (hope that doesn't encourage all the publicly acknowledged trolls to try to whip up some anarchic angst!).

A lot of great posts by a growing number of pretty passionate (& informed) Griz fans. More than anywhere else, I see some resurgent glimmers of Montana Basketball fever once again (yep! I, too was an original Zoo member!).

(Now we just have to figure out how to keep Wayne Tinkle at the helm of Griz Basketball for another 10-20 years.)

In that light, MtGrizRule (my own caps added) is far and away the most informed, balanced, objective and passionate about Griz basketball herein. And with his post numbers edging toward the 12 THOUSAND mark, easily the most faithful and "ever present."

Rule. You rule. Don't let detractors sway you. Griz basketball needs fans like you. Especially here.

if grizrule were lying in the street bleeding, i'd drag him immediately to the nearest sherwin williams, buy pints of maroon and silver paint, and inject them into his body as quickly as possible. he probably wouldn't survive, but he'd go out the way he wanted.

Thanks for the respect and kind comments everyone. Was not expecting any of it. Citay, you have a great read on me. My 2 favorite teams are GRIZ Basketball, and GRIZ Football (in that order too). If and when my days are done, I will make sure the GRIZ get a little extra from above. Heaven for me has always been, and always will be GRIZ basketball and football games.

Back to Cherry, I am hoping for some "official" good news for him, and the GRIZ soon. :thumb:

Larry, and now Wayne personally managed to separate basketball from football for me. 2 great players, great coaches, and even greater men. I hope Will Cherry will go onto a similar path as they did after his playing days are through.

I just got home from work, seen the posts. I am sorry for jumping the gun on that. I heard from someone who was there that heard Will say something like "It is broken" or "I broke it." I don't how much closer someone can be than someone who heard Will say something similar to that?

Fortunately Will was wrong, and in turn I was wrong. I will take being "wrong" anytime when it comes to if an player or anyone broke something or not. I wish every time there is/was an injury we all could be wrong.

Very seldom is the injured player/person wrong on an injury that person has already had before. Now, I am praying hard he will be playing pretty healthy. Then again, I am being optimistic because I love GRIZ Basketball.

So put away the torches and save the bitching. I admit, the news was better than anyone thought. Including those there to see it, and hear what was said. GO GRIZ!!!!!
I once swore my rotator was torn. Nope. I was wrong.

Jack, where the hell you been? I know you guys are strangely struggling, but that's no reason to be a stranger.

Everett - I'm having more fun watching NAU basketball now than last year. Lots of live hoops...caught the NAU-UofA game, ASU vs. Cal and Stanford (on a Montana note... Huestis was the best player on the court that day), NAU-Sac State and am driving up the mountain Saturday to watch NAU-Weber State.

The Jacks aren't ready to compete vs. Weber State and U of Montana yet but things are looking up for NAU. Russell has the potential to be special. Live or delayed TV coverage by Fox Sports AZ is at an all time high. NAU has a young, driven coach who's shown a penchant for recruiting. Nowhere to go but up.

Sad to hear about Cherry and Ward being injured. I expect things to go down to the wire between the Griz and Wildcats.

I think even before you posted I linked an article that said Will's injury "felt like exactly when he broke it". Moving forward, I HOPE the Griz can win the two road games against MSU and SUU and get home to Dahlberg and hopefully get those last two games as well - then get Will back for the Big Sky Tourney, that would be great!

OK, I have heard there is not a broken bone. Does anyone know the exact injury diagnosis (sprain strained bruised) and what treatment is Will receiving and what is the timeframe for his return ? Final home regular season game or BSC tourney or not at all? He is a talented player and will be needed to win the BSC tourney and qualify for the big dance.

I've always known will cherry was good. however I always had my doubts on just how good he was on offence (I already knew he was terrific at defence). I thought the wisconsin game last year exposed his weaknesses of just driving and hoping for a foul from BSC refs.

HOWEVER

this year I was proved wrong. Maybe he changed his game more but he was creating opportunities and he showed he can take a game over. In the second half of the Davidson game I was amazed at just how good he was. and then BAM, just as I was having this cherry-piphany he got injured. I'm gutted. In my opinion he was just hitting his stride and proving himself as a truly NBA worthy player. I hope he gets better in time for tourny, but even then, how fit will he be?

Its a sad end to a great college career. But here's hoping a speedy recovery and all the best in his future basketball career wherever that may be. :thumb:

He has had zero weight on it... NCAA tourney at earliest from very reliable source

Thanks KB. That is what I thought (feared).

Cherry, who missed the first seven games of the season with a broken bone in his right foot, thought that he had broken it again late in the game at Davidson.

“It was kind of the same, but it was more when I came down that I heard it pop,” Cherry said. “I instantly thought it broke. There was no way I could have gone back in the game. It was the same exact feeling as when I broke it.”

X-rays on Sunday, though, did not show a break and a more detailed look with a CT scan on Monday confirmed the X-rays.

“They actually said it looked exactly the same as my last checkup. (Jan. 28),” Cherry said.

Cherry said there is no timetable yet for his return. “That’s a hard call,” Cherry said when asked if he thought he would play for the Griz again. “As of right now I don’t know too much. I haven’t walked an ounce on it since. I want to say I’ll give it a week to see how it’s feeling. Right now it feels as if something’s wrong, but nobody knows what it is. That’s the confusing part and that’s the scary part because I don’t know what the percentages are of me going back out there and this time breaking it. “Personally, I feel like it’s a warning sign, telling me to take it easy. But I know me, I want to get back on the court. If my foot’s not feeling right, I’m not going to push it because sure, I want to end my career right and do some things I haven’t been able to accomplish. The only thing left for me in my career is to win a game or two in the NCAA tournament and that’s what I want to do. But I have to think long term because there’s life after college basketball. I have to think of what’s best for me personally.”

Are they icing the ankle/foot 2-3-4 times a day? Electric Stim once or twice daily ? Are they doing additional xrays or MRIs to double-check things (sometimes fractures show up later with bone calcium) ? If anyone knows the prognosis, please share / thanks. I agree with ozzie that Cherry has developed his offensive game over the last 2-3 years, and his creativity makes the rest of the UM players more effective. UM looked so much better in the 2nd half against Davidson, when Will was running the offense and defense.

Not a frequent poster here as I'm a FB guy, just trying to get a line on the Cherry and Ward situations. The squabble is 99% in Rule's favor and I join that group. I would just suggest to have a little thicker skin when some jackoff calls you out; no need to let it get to you. As Peaux and I know from the FB forum, there are many out there. Keep up the good work and enjoy it.

Ward's timeline of 2 to 4 weeks still has not changed. I am hearing different things about Will, but will not say more at this time. The fact he cannot put weight on it, is not a good sign. Strictly a guess, sounds to me the only way we see him is in post season action. I hope I am wrong on that though, and he plays in the Conference tournament.

Don't know who all saw this tweet/post from last night:

http://www.grizbasketball.com/?p=804" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"I talked to Griz senior point guard Will Cherry today for his senior profile, which will run in Saturday’s Missoulian. He was sounding more optimistic about being able to return from the foot injury he suffered last week at Davidson.

“I’m able to walk on it without the boot around the house without being in pain,” Cherry said. “It’s the best it’s felt since the injury. I don’t want to jinx anything, but there’s still hopes for me to come back and finish this year.”

That would be great news for the Griz and their fans."

my opinion: will is done. he has too much of a future in pro basketball to risk further injury now.

hey im a fan from another rival school but im curious..

What makes you guys so confident this guy would be drafted or signed? He has not been on ANY mock drafts at all and most sites (well almost all) dont even have him listed any more on the top 100 NBA prospects. Plus throw in the recent injury string and well yeah....

This draft class to many fans is considered extremely weak as is. Kinda odd he wouldnt even crack the top 100 list on major sites... :?: :?: :?:

nba scouts have attended several griz games this year--and not to watch nick emerson. i suspect cherry's bud damien lilliard has influenced a few people as well. plus coaches love defense, will's forte. (oh, ever heard of europe?)

Oh damn you must like to throw rocks at hornets nests or something. Coming on the Montana fan board and saying that Will Cherry is NOT an NBA talent is not a smart thing to do. (spoken out of personal experience) My advice to you is to duck and cover and for the love DO NOT read any inbox messages that will come. Montana fans are a VERY sensitive bunch. :grenade:
