Williams NOT confirmed by Senate

Good job to Brint and everyone that put the pressure on---- you were heard over here. I worked quietly on the sidelines over here, but couldn't be too open as I had clients whose interests I can't jeopardize. Just got confirmation on the vote---- 23 votes for PW and all 21 Demos were for him---believe this was a caucus position so no surprise there--- only two Republicans crossed over--- Sen. Peterson who received a direct and personal appeal from Williams and Dee Brown from Columbia Falls.

Note of caution: this may not be over. Hopefully it is, but according to parliamentary rules there is nothing to prevent the same motion from being made tomorrow, or the next day.
Unless they use different parli pro rules there is, it could be reconsidered.

Unfortunately the vote was pretty much on party lines. All Democrats voted for confirmation and all but two (I think) Republicans voted against confirmation.

Too bad it turned into a Right v Left thing....

Right vs WRONG prevailed. Not often enough, though.

I thought it was the right decision. You can't have someone on the regents that you have to constantly worry about going rogue. Individual board members should mostly stay out of the press....

What usually is nothing more than a Parliamentary vote became a real debate based on the statements and the arrogance of former Congressman Williams. This just goes to show how we, as citizens, need to mobilize and let our opinions be heard.
I think we all owe a special thank you to a ton of hardworking dedicated Griz supporters for all they did. Thanks BW and the numerous others that worked so hard. Now it is important not to let our guard down and keep this decision from being flipped later in this legislature session.

I understand the pressure to tow the party line and Pat Williams certainly is the state's liberal poster boy of years gone by. Yet I was disappointed none of the Senate democrats had the backbone to oppose his appointment. Glad there were enough votes to have him removed.

Hope the new Governor selects a better and more stable candidate to nominate for this position. :ugeek:

This may have been a party line vote, but it was Pat's stupid statement and his pathetic effort at damage control that gave the Republicans the rationale to vote against him. For a guy that is supposed to be politcally adept, this was a display of fumbling ignorance.

Great news, WTG everyone who emailed their disapproval. Thank you Brint for keeping us all updated.

AS for the BOR candidate........ I elect Jim O'day. How ironic would that turn out to be? :thumb:

This whole opposition to the Pat Williams nomination really shows the power of a motivated "grass roots" effort. Good job Griz fans!

This outcome pleases me so much!! I have to be honest I hoped this would happen but feared it would not. Griz nation should be very proud! Brint if you read this, you sir did an outstanding job.

I have an honest question. How many other fan basis in the FCS ranks could or would have pulled together this same way? I bet very, very few. Heck I bet a good many FBS schools would not have either.

This really goes to show how strong and united Griz nation is and can be. We need to build from this and look at this as a stepping stone.

Also I want to say thanks to the Cat fans that supported this as well. :thumb: ok.... That's out of the way... See you Scats on the field...

On Mike & Mike this morning they were talking about the power of social media. The old school dems in MT just got served a healthy serving on how it works.

Exerpt from the Missoulian article:

After the vote, Williams said, “I am disappointed in the partisan nature of the Senate vote. But I am not surprised that the same Senate, which voted today to legalize and encourage our students to pack heat on our college campuses, does not want me as a member of the Board of Regents."

Makes you wonder how Williams will handle this. Will he be vengeful? Will he be supportive of Montana's Education system? Will he go away quietly?

Real leaders, wether they agree with their plight of not, continue to support the causes they are suppose to care for and are suppose to be passionate about. A great example is Jim O'Day. He was removed with very little explanation. However, despite that decision and the way he had been treated, he's continued to be very supportive and passionate about the University and the Grizzly Athletics. Hopefully, Williams will follow his example.

Pyrrhic victory!?

Um problems go much, much deeper than the dismissal of pw........we may have experienced a golden age for much of past two decades..high visibility...athletic success....record enrollments....

Do we have what it takes to re-tool......got some deep $$$$ and pr holes to dig out of but where are leaders coming from?

What killed the Pat? Arrogance killed the Pat...

A picture is worth a thousand words.

It's interesting how some are concerned that it was a party line vote but still talk their political smack. I'm a democrat and I sent four emails to the committee and individual senators to not confirm PW. And I will likely continue to vote in the future with my party.

sadly, but not surprisingly, this was purely a political vote by both parties and had nothing to do with what he said. same old game in helena.

BeGrizzled your post be dazzled me. It's truely OK though...MANY posts here bedazzle me.

So let me try to understand...

The conduct committee (or whatever they call themselves) holds JJ accountable. The University President holds the head coach accountable (as well as the AD.) Probably 90% of the people on this messageboard (probably including yourself) want to hold the President accountable. In the same breath those same 90% want to hold Pat Williams accountable, but you my friend will vote party, club, good old boy (cause I'm party affiliated) and not hold Senators accountable?

There it is my friends. This is why nothing in our city, state or country will ever change for the better.

The folks at the top need to be held accountable (just like the rest) and until people start looking at individuals in power and not being the sheep and blindly following (just cause) nothing will ever change. I say this if you're a Dem or Rep.

Vote what is best for the City, State, Country, (in this case University system) and not the group.

Good luck to you and your group mentality. :thumb:
