Will UC Davis continue?

UC Davis has all the pieces to be a playoff team year in and out at the FCS level. They have a decent stadium, good inner facilities, good degree programs and attendance, nice place to live and now a good coach. With most california FCS schools it all comes down to recruiting. If they can tap into a pipeline of kids that want to come FCS and play hard for a TEAM....they will be great. Right now they have the luxury of having a NFL capable QB and last year a NFL WR on their team. They should again be good this year as they had a younger team last year. California schools have been a flash in the pan in FCS and usually its because of team chemistry and design, NOT talent. SAC and UCD often have very very good athletes.

I think they are for real atleast for the next few years.
BSC:
1. EWU
2.Weber
3. UCD
4.MSU
5.MT

Top dogs in the Big Sky next year will be EWU, UCD, MSU, and Weber. The griz will probably join that group in 2020.

There is no telling. There are about 6-7 teams that will be in the mix in this insanely way too big conference. Three of those teams you mentioned do lose a good chunk of talent and MSU won't take that next step until they can create a passing threat in their offense. Still think UCD and EWU are the only for sure contenders. Sac State, NAU and PSU will also be improved with returning QBs where they will least challenge or ruin someone's chances. It is going to be pretty wide open again.

The Griz have a large senior class with lots of talent on next year's team. If they don't join this top group next year then it might not be for a few years due to loss of talent. My bet is that next year they will be at or near the top. They need improvement up front across both lines and they have every reason to be at the top if that happens. I'm still waiting for a big-bodied NT to transfer in and save the day.

Davis has always really been looked at as a strong academic institution with not much investment into athletics in relation to their total budget. Will be interesting to see if their strong alumni network will start to open their checkbooks to invest more into building FBS level facilities.

As long as Dan Hawkins is their head coach, UC Davis will continue to vying for Big Sky Conf. Championships year in and year out...

He did wonders at CU.

When he was HC at Colorado he made the big mistake very much to his demise by putting himself in the position of being both Father and Coach to his employers $tarting QB which I'm sure he's learned from...His kid was a decent QB but questionable for the Pac12 level as I recall. Not a good situation to be in...Similar to the Petrino situation over at Idaho..Hawkins is a Davis alum., has been around the block to the big leagues and has big time support at Davis. I wouldn't be surprised if he's satisfied his big time coaching aspirations and sticks with Davis a good while.

IT'S THE BIG TWEEEUHLVE.
Go play intramurals, brother.

We will have a decent sized Senior class this next year. 20 to my count. all of which are red shirt seniors except for 1. 12 of which saw good amount of PT last year. EWU had 28 seniors last year. Weber has 18 this upcoming year. NDSU for perspective had 25 last year and almost all saw the field a good amount of time. 20 seniors is not unusual. We will still have quite a bit of young depth.

For instance we have 26 juniors on the roster this upcoming year. That will be a big senior class.

the 26 juniors next year should translate into depth......will it ?

to be fair, 2 of those listed are no longer with the team. but by my account between 14-18 should be playing enough for everyone to know their name. We also have 20 sophomores and a good amount have seen the field not only on ST but in a position group. our depth should look a LOT better this year than last barring injuries. DL of course is ? for me for depth.

Not sure why anyone would think that UCD would not be a contender for the BSC most every year. Of the three California schools in the conference they have traditionally had the best program.

They were a very good D2 school. Just taken a bit more time after the transition to D1. I agree they should be competitive year after year as they have a lot to offer in Academics for kids.

It's just the greatest soundbite since Iverson's "Practice" rant.

The Sam Kinison reference to Hawkin's rant is spot on

I think the 2019 griz team will actually be pretty good, especially if Sneed stays healthy. I know a lot of you guys call him "one read Sneed" and while he's not perfect - he's a gamer and he's tough.

Your main problem in 2019 is your schedule. Brutal.

Didn’t Hawkins apply for the Griz job when we got Stitt? How crazy would that have been?

I don't know if he applied, but he hung out at UM for a bit, made his interest known, but it wasn't mutual.

Davis is a great school with good resources and a winning tradition in D-II. It's better positioned as an institution to support a successful athletic program than any other big sky school.
