Will Griz players kneel during the national anthem?

I spent to many years in uniform defending what the flag represents.

Uhh, doesn't the flag represent a nation in which people are free to protest their government? Isn't that precisely what we fight wars FOR?

And thanks for your service!

And people are also free to say they don’t like kneeling at a sporting event.

Absolutely!

I might question their rationale for doing so, but of course they're welcome.

You are right, they have the right to do so, and anyone has the right to think they're being disrespectful (which I feel as well). What I don't like about the "team" kneeling or 100% kneeling (which I think the NFL is going to do) is the pressure individuals on each team might feel to do so. I doubt every player is okay with this, yet they might be accused of being racist or not a "team player." That's a problem in my book.

Rule # 1. Rights have responsibilities and consequences.
Rule # 2. The Bill of Rights set forth rights of citizens that pertain to the government.

People do not have free speech rights during periods of work, whether for private entities or the governments (see, e.g., Hatch Act).

As to sports, if the owner/coach (pro ball) or coach (college ball) says no kneeling, there may be consequences if the the player kneels. The player can decide what they want to do but has no ground to bitch about what consequences come his way. They have no right to free speech other than what may be in the collective bargaining.

Since this thread is about fan reactions, whatever the fan reaction is, it is legitimate. Support it, don't support it, cheer the player, boo the player, buy his jersey, burn her jersey, don't be offended or be offended by it. It's all legit.

Query, if you are offended, does it mean that in today's woke climate you should feel free to tear down any team statutes or deface the player's picture on team posters spread around town; or burn their vehicles; or storm their apartments? Isn't violent protesting of the peaceful protest the American way?

I hope so. I like the idea of our players representing equality for all.

Currently in the USA 1 in 1000 black males will be killed by police. Far more that other races.

Horribilis, student athletes are under different rules, not saying I agree, but here it is.

So did my father who was a Sergeant Major in the Army that marked bombsites in Cambodia during the Vietnam war. He is all for freedom of expression. You?

For some perspective, 1 in 2,000 males will be killed by the police.

Native American women are more likely to be killed by police than Black women. Red Lives Matter.

Yes. 1 in 2000 males are killed by police. That statistic would be equal among races if their was no racism.

And you are right. Lives matter. And BLM is about showing you that Red, Black, other minorities are dying at the hands of police at greater rates than are normal in our society. You are some weird sort of Tom for indigenous people.

This topic is simply toxic. There is very little middle ground it seems.

Personally, I don’t care who kneels. It has zero impact on me. It doesn’t impact my Family or well being. It doesn’t directly impact the men I lead in hide positions or forward operating bases in complete shit holes around the globe. It doesn’t prevent them from excelling. Most of them could give 2 shits about kneeling.

It reminds me of when don’t ask, don’t tell was being repealed. Oh, the doom and gloom. Remember?

Most in the service gave 2 shits about that as well. It just didn’t / doesn’t matter. Over-hyped, over-covered, and over politicized.

Who cares.

Perhaps players wouldn’t be kneeling if they didn’t have to protest the acts of others that disrespect the Constitution and Flag.

Soldier. You know I respect you. But, it does matter. Plenty of my military friends have made that clear.

I would add that along with players suffering possible consequences for violating a no-kneel rule, so too might the coach implementing the rule. He/she may lose community endorsement deals, lose the confidence of an administration, or lose out on attracting student-athletes who do not want to play under such rules. As 8184 suggests, there are consequences to most of our rights.

Grizpsych, did you even the read article? A 9th Circuit decision supporting first amendment rights of student athletes. You don't need to go protest.

Think there are going to be consequences after all these years?

We run in very different circles. Most I know couldn't care less. A few absolutely despise those kneeling...

I am in the couldn't care less crowd.
