Why defer?

For the last two weeks, we have won the coin flip and deferred to the second half both times.
Against NAU, we give up a 75 yard run on the first play for a TD.
Tonight, EWU drives the field and scores a touchdown in a little over 4 minutes.
So if we win the coin flip, do we keep deferring?

Especially since we basically gave up with 2 TOs and plenty of time to score at the end of the 2nd, then went 3 and out on our first possession in the 3rd....

On the road, though, its a toss up. Hard to criticize a coach for handling coin toss.

I would think that the idea of deffering if you win the coin toss is to get your defense out there and force a three and out, and then get good field position for the offense. Since we have not only not forced a three and out, we actually gave up TD's on both occasions, we might want to start considering taking the ball if we win coin tosses. What could it hurt in comparison?

Yeah...maybe....assuming Nguyen, Moore, Canada...etc doesn't fumble on the kickoff or opening drive.

I've always heard the differing strategy as a rule of thumb for football coaches. It's not a huge impact, but if you are behind after the second half, you want to get your team back out and hungry for points. Once you get your team real hungry and pumped up, why not make sure they have the ball right away?

I've always thought it was best to defer. When everyone is nervous at the beginning of the game it's better to have the defense on the field to work the butterflies out.
