Pflugrad took the fall, but the problems that we went through were all with players that BH recruited here. Jordy is the only exception that I can think of, and he was acquitted.
While Hauck has some baggage, or perceived baggage, I doubt that the Regents would block his return. Engstrom would be the more likely stumbling block, but I think Hauck's strong, but not universal, support from large athletic donors and potential donors, several of whom are also large non-athletic donors, may cause Engstrom et al to take a closer look and overcome resistance to Hauck. And, Hauck is older and presumably wiser. Note the nice positive article written by the UNLV student reporter for athletics.
First, I don't think anyone deserved to be fired for bad-behavior issues among athletes at UM. That was a horrible decision by an inexperienced president who didn't know what he was doing, and who didn't seek proper advice. Everything was blown out of proportion by the Missoulian and Florio, who did a huge disservice to UM and MIssoula. Considerable harm was done to UM and Missoula by the Missoulian. Rumor and innuendo was pushed to the status of truth for several years. Engstrom got caught up in that. Much of what was presented as fact or almost fact, turned out not to be true.
Second, it was not all Bobby's recruits. Some of Pflu's transfers and a few of his younger guys were involved in some of the stuff too (look at the group BJ incident).
Third, many of the supposed problems or issues, turned out not to be true. Besides JJ, there were numerous other supposed issues, where no charges were brought, charges were dropped, school disciplinary proceedings were won by players or dropped by the university. Wilson's murder charge caused UM huge bad press, but he won his case, was allowed back at UM, and is playing in the NFL. While there has been too much bad behavior, the Missoulian and the internet made it seem like there was double or triple what there actually was.
Hauck was a huge disciplinarian who sent players on their way for the larger things, including, for example, the pre-season all-american Vernon Smith. Apparently, UNLV had very few issues while he was there. People should be judged in the present not in the past. Of course, the past needs to be considered, but look at the student newspaper thing. Does anybody really think there is a large chance of Hauck fighting with the Kaimin if he returned to Missoula. I don't.
