Who should the University NOT hire, and why

To hire a high school coach as the next Griz HC is ridiculous. Does anyone remember the Gene Carlson era? Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Sorry, Grady.
That's a pretty small sample size. Is being a high school coach the only reason why so many believe he's not fit to be the HC? Is there anything else about his record as a coach or his style? Not trying to be a Bennett apologist here. But I've yet to hear any substantial reasons why he couldn't coach the Griz.

Maybe not the most popular opinion because I honestly like the guy, like the way he ran the team for the most part, and wish him the best. I also don't entirely know if he'd want to return anyways.

Bobby Hauck. Hear me out, for Bobby it's a big gamble;

1. If he returned and a widely public off-field issue happened - and he had a few during his first tenure - the public freak out would be at an all time high. Some would suggest the work of the last few years to get things back in order was all for not, it would be a big flame-out.

2. If he doesn't get right back to dominating the Big Sky many will presume he's lost his edge. I would bet the expectations of him from our fan base would be to return and immediately pick up from where he left off in 2009.

3. What would he do with his assistant coaches? Presumably many of his current guys couldn't take the decreased pay. Also his OC and DC when he was here are now just position coaches. Rosenbaugh, his current OC isn't too highly thought of in many circles around here.

-----------

I will say, on the other hand if he were to come back here and get things rolling right away and avoid the off-field junk he would rapidly become something of Montana legend.

NO. Bobby had his chances and NEVER won the chipper. Let's move on. :dead:

Not speaking for Bennet, I don't know enough about him. But there are a few examples of high school coaches taking to the college game immediately. The Auburn head coach was a high school head coach less than a decade ago... Leipold to me seems like the resume that could make the jump.

There will be more qualified applicants...

Carlson had been an assistant coach for the Griz for 3 years before he was promoted to head coach. Not sure your comparison even makes sense.

DIII is pretty much High School. No to Leipold.

I dunno. I'm torn with this guy. Seems like a thinker and a builder. My worry would not be the level he is coaching now rather the lack of (any) connections with this program. If he ends up here hopefully the staff around him makes up for that.

Sorry, I just keep looking at his record and wonder if he could do good things in the next few years with the awesome recruits we have.

At the going rate, I would not expect too much. My guess is you are looking at a D2 or D3 head coach, or an FCS coordinator as the new HC.

The Head Coach needs to have a recruiting network in place as well as commitments for his assistants. Grady, as a HS coach does not have either. Give Bobby Hauck is due for being prepared with these essential ingredients at his interview at UM.
