Whiskey question

Good idea to try a shot. It is very peaty (Smokey) in nature. See if you like it.
I have a variety of whisky. For Irish, my hands down favorite is Red Breast. For Scotch it depends on my mood; I like Balvenie and Dalmore if I don’t want the peat and Laphroaig 10 yr if I want something with a little more peat. If you like either Irish or Scotch I would encourage you to try Laphroaig at least once.

Ok. This is looking like an expensive new hobby.

Ok, well all I can think of is Peat Moss, and I have used it in the garden, but I don't get why... Whiskey...

I have to go full on Geek though with anything, so will have to explore, just can't justify $80 something for a Scotch Isle without knowing what you're saying...

State Monopoly meaning the price is the same everywhere? That was WA 25 years ago or so, no idea about now...

I was surprised here, the Jameson's I got at the Bar down the street was $10 cheaper than at one of the joints 10 miles away...

Thanks for the advice from everyone, if anything, I know Jameson Regular I guess is perfectly fine... Doesn't say 10 year or 18 year like Laphroaig.
I’m not sure where you can find it but if you travel a lot, the Delta sky club in SLC has Laphroaig 10 for a reasonable price. I occasionally see it in bars around the state. This thread inspired me to pour a dram, thanks Cuervohola.

Welcome... Do they still have the bizarre rules in SLC like they have to have a curtain so minors don't see the EVIL alcohol being poured? SLC cracked me up, only time I have been there, underground "Mafia" style Club that "nobody knew about"...

It was fun, I was 21 according to my freshly minted ID that said so from a shop in Seattle, and the bouncer knew how fake it was from the minute he saw me...

Not in the Sky Club, the bar is on your left as you walk in.

Right, not in the Airport. Around the State?

Scotch and Bourbon don't have the taste for me. However, Rye Whiskeys are my favorite. Most in the $40-50 range. Templeton out of Iowa, Bullet Rye and a few others that I've forgotten. Not sure if I've had a bad Rye.

Way back in the day (when I had a day job), I had occasion to visit Oak Ridge National Lab after a conference in Gatlinburg. I was one of only a few who had a rental car, so I carried a load of passengers along. One of them was a Scot who worked at Dounreay (a nuclear facility, in case you don't know). We hit it off and decided get some booze and talk shop. However, I warned him that he wasn't going the find much decent Scotch at the state store. He was emphatic that he preferred to try something local. So, since we were splitting the cost, we bought a bottle of Jim Beam Black Label. Damn it was good! We actually managed to not kill the bottle that first night.

I'll chime in a bit. You could always see about going to a distillery and doing a tasting. Don't know about Helena, but Bozeman (I know, gross, but it's the area I live in) actually has a whiskey bar where you can get a taste of just about any whiskey you could ever want.

Well, this is about to show exactly how little I know about "sophisticated" booze...

I loathe Rye Bread.

Probably not close?

Good idea if in Baghdad, Tehran, Pyongyang... But I couldn't do that in Bozoville because then I would have to stay there overnight, or have someone drive back and forth, and I haven't earned that kind of favor locally.

I can't stay overnight in Bozoville because I'm scared I would be trapped in the Matrix there forever.

It's a real problem, yes.

I find them smoother finishing than bourbon and scotch. I only drink it with 1 ice cube and maybe 2 fingers tall in a whiskey glass.

Huh. Not a Solo Cup?

Ok, now I'm sipping that "dirt" I was talking about... Rich and Rare...

$14 Dolla G.I.!!! Me love you long time!

Holy Crap it's brutal...

Maybe I will geek out on Whiskey and get the good stuff for just sipping once a week or whatever.
I just picked up a 1.75 L of Kentucky Gentleman last trip to CO for $11.95. Fine for ditches, which is what I usually drink. I have a few cases of Ten High 1.75 L stored, which runs $13.95 down there.

No taste for Scotch. I'm a deplorable.

Yeah, as a Neanderthal myself, I'm not worthy of the expensive stuff. Maybe some day I will grow up and reach Deplorable status.

Not much of a Scotch fan. I don't like "peaty", nor " smokey". But I do like one cheap Scotch, which has a crisp taste: Balantines. I much prefer the Irish whiskeys: Red Breast and Jameson's.
