Whiskey question

I haven't been looking at this site for some time, but it is about time that a thread like this was started. Although Irish genetics run strong in my family, the love of heavy peat or smoke isn't my cup of tea per say. Two opinions.
1. You mentioned you like Tequila, you may like Tequila finished in Whiskey barrels. Front side of the sip you get a Whiskey taste and it finishes with the pepper like Tequila. You can get Jose dark pretty cheap and tasty.
2. Monkey Shoulder Scotch is about $40. and smooth as very expensive Scotch.

Everyone has different tastes and hard to give advice without knowing what you like or don't like. Good posts, this is where a good tail-gater can get free tasters from-tail gate to tail -gate. We have been having guys show up with $150-$300 bottles and are not stingy. To each their own and as you said it can be an expensive hobby finding out what a good Scotch, Bourbon, or Whiskey is. The other funny part is Wild Turkey is as flavorful as many big dollar bottles.

Keep in mind Wild Turkey can lead to teenage pregnancies

If you're talking about me, I'm not a fan of Tequila. I don't know anything about it.

I'll look into Monkey Shoulder Scotch. It's $35 for 750ml, which... I'm not a mathmetician or anything, can't even spell it right, but I know that's 3/4 of a Liter. I have to remember that because I know some alcohol also comes in Liters. (Just saying for price comparison since it was all over the place for Jemeson's).

I was told before I was legal to stay away from the Turkey. I don't remember why, but it was from an old timer.

That was good advice to a youngster. High octane(Wild Turkey) 101 proof will light you up if not careful. As you get older the high octane will open taste buds, first sip is rough but give it a minute two-three shots will do the trick of five or six shots of 80 proof. After first sip of WT taste buds open up and you get nice flavors by far best bang for the buck. Monkey Shoulder is one of the easiest drinking Scotch you will find.

A whiskey story I will try to keep brief. A sizeable part of my global R&D organization was in in Bavaria via an acquisition. I spend an enormous amount of time developing the local R&D Director and integrating him into the global team. He showed his gratitude by bringing a gift every time he came to the US. He knew I drank whiskey, and since in Europe whiskey means Scotch, I was gifted a lot of really good (I guess) Scotch. I did not have the heart to tell him his thoughtful gifts missed the mark. I became very popular for my regifting.

I totally get the journey of finding a good whiskey without breaking the bank.

I've tried a ton over the years. After a long day at work, there's nothing like sitting in front of the TV with a glass of whiskey on ice - it's my small way to unwind.

My go-to has to be Kirkland's Canadian whiskey from the Costco hard alcohol section. It's priced just right at $19, and the light, sweet flavors of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of toasted oak really hit the spot. Other brands might offer more complexity, but for a casual evening drink, this one does the trick for me without breaking the bank.

If you're on a budget but still want a decent experience, I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

Ok, despite my name, I have only had Tequila twice that I remember... 95 percent of the other liquor in my life was whatever it was. I have never been much of a liquor drinker unless it was dropping a shot in a Beer or something.

That said, the Dirt crap Whiskey I have kept around for an occasional sip is exactly that according to my taste buds since I just tasted some Jameson I'm using to make Bailey's Chocolate with.

So.. does it get better with the price point, the Jameson's being $40 and the Dirt... Rich... something being $14?

I didn't know if it was just a "name brand" thing, but the Jameson's is some pretty badass swill.

What about the Scotch Isle stuff like Laphroaig? It's like $80, so unless it's insane by someone's report here, I won't geek out that much for now...

Jamison on ice, let it sit for a couple minutes. Hard to beat. Tulemore Dew's just as good though, and Jamison purchased them. If you really want the best bang for the buck try Slane Irish Whiskey. It's a little less in cost, and a lot more in taste. Far and away my fav. Don't doubt me because I'm a Cat fan, trust me because I know how to dodge our coordinators on the way home from Spectators.

Perhaps, humor me here, whiskey is just not your thing. Rum, Vodka, whatever, may be your niche. Shop around.
Maybe the bubs coaches could lend their expertise.

I don't do Ice, and Jamison is on my good list... I'll keep Slane in mind, thanks for that. I have a bottle of Sudden Wisdom from MT, I'll crack it if the Griz make the playoffs by winning, despite not having a coach. The way the Junior High schedule is set up, they will probably get an 8 seed since they don't play anybody.

I'll drink to that! I think the Griz finish the regular season higher than 8.
