I don’t check into egriz much anymore due to all the peckerwoods here (life is too short to read idiot blather), but I just saw this thread and want to state that whether or not to go for it on 4th down in my opinion depends on the circumstances.

Early in the game with a close score I think it is more prudent to kick a field goal on 4th down. If you are up by a lot it is clearly best to kick a field goal on 4th down. If you are down by a lot I can see where the risk of going for it on 4th down becomes more worth it. However there are still many circumstances to consider (e.g., yardage needed for 1st down, probable success of making 1st down, how prepared is other team to stop you, what is the score, how much time is left in the game, etc.). There are some situations where it would pay to go for it on 4th down, but those are a minority of situations.

I think it was a poor coaching decision for Coach Delaney to go for it on the 3 yard line on 4th down in the first half against NAU when Griz were down 14-3. If Griz kick a field goal they go into halftime only down 14-6. The odds of Griz scoring a TD from the 3 yard line were less than 50%, and the odds of making a field goal were over 90%.

Due to Delaney’s poor coaching decision Griz went into halftime against NAU down 21-3 instead of 14-6. Clearly that did not turn out to be a good coaching decision.

And if they scored the td, there would not be ONE person on here saying it was a bad decision. They would be thumping their chests claiming it was a ballsy call, and a great one.

I disagree. I would still say I disagreed with the decision. I would have been very happy with that result, but I would still say I would've kicked it.

And that's the entire point: it's an opinion. There is no right or wrong answer.

Funny. The topic is: Where are all the don't go for it on 4th down haters? I guess we showed up in mass...LOL.

Hind sight is 20/20 cowboy. If you think a bad bounce where an Nau player found
the ball in his hands and made the most of it means anything in the big picture you are a moron. That return play happens maybe once in a thousand times.

ascertain the difference...well

It flat blows me away how some people on here can't seem to grasp that very concept.

It flat out blows me away how some people on here can't seem to grasp that there are often answers that are better, or more right, than others--just like there are opinions that are either right (or wrong) or more right than others. It also flat out blows me away some people on here cannot recognize or admit that there are some people who are far more knowledgeable about football than others. Some of these people are the people who complain about our society or Missoula getting more into awarding ribbons to all participants--yet they seem to want a ribbon for their opinions, whether or not they are correct or more correct (or not correct) than others.

What blows me away is how much time some of you fucking nerds spend on e-griz, including half your weekend arguing about a 4th down call three weeks ago.

Oh the irony. I mean, you couldn't make this shit up. Solid gold right here, solid gold.

And the eGriz coach of the year award clearly goes to......oh wait never mind, your continuous weak defense of this thread (and bashing of other peoples opinions) reeks of desperation just as the play in discussion. Here is your participation ribbon, you earned it.

From this point on I have decided to skip over anything posted by the by "far more knowledgeable about football than others" in the entire planet, PlayerRep. Or was it CoachRep...I hear there are a few teams looking for a quality coach, or are you just waiting for your almost equally brilliant football equivalent Delaney to retire again...maybe you should apply and show us all how far superior of a football mind you have than anyone else. :thumb:

Seriously, I would love to be there when they read over your resume/application and review your qualifications and coaching experience. Once they see you actually played the game at a decent level combined with your incredible knowledge of the game you are a shoe in for the position. You will likely blow the competition away just like you do on here.

Of course we all already know you are way too good for the NFL, but just in case your career doesn't work out in NCAA (As If), I believe the Arena football league would be a perfect fit for your far advanced superior skills and mentality.

Why do everyone-should-get-a-ribbon guys like you get so bent out of shape, and start crying, when someone doesn't agree with their/your opinion? I can already see that you are going to be one of those posters that feels that he has to make a (dumb) comment on my posts.

LOL Says the guy who feels the need to not only respond to everyone else who expresses their opinions but has to belittle them at the same time. You are the one who clearly cannot handle someone not agreeing with your opinion or you would let your original post and couple follow up replies speak for themselves instead of beating a dead horse to death. Get over yourself and the fact that some people have different opinions or football philosophies than yours.

No I am not going "to be one of those posters...", I am not wasting any more time reading anything posted by you so carry on your little thou are better than everyone else routine...You are a football legend, at least on eGriz and in your own mind.

Player Rep.....guess you know that lots of people on this board know who you are....someone even posted your picture on here someplace once.

Some other people who know you (like me) can truly not believe the amount of time you waste in this board and the number of people you bash and belittle.

Pretty damn amazing. I'd be embarrassed.

....and...I was screaming at the screen BEFORE the fumble and the return for a TD. I wanted 14 - 6 as a score at the end of our worst half of the year, a little momentum and chance to turn things around in the second half........so now go ahead and bash and belittle
me.....and embarrass yourself ...once again.
